And how you prevent the board being jammed with short words which make it much more difficult to get closer to the end of the board for triple word scores.

How often, in a game, are you using your turn to swap a letter?

I repeatedly get lots of vowels at once or consonants such as Q,K,Z,X,Y's all at once which results in me just playing really badly.

Any tips? I'm a sore loser.

I used to play with my grandma. She got squeeze on a triple. Can't remember the exact score but it was high!

whiteroseredrose · 14/01/2018 21:35

Sorry. The board was often jammed as she made the most of little words like qi or za on a triple letter going in both directions.

swapsicles · 14/01/2018 21:35

I once played fidgeter for 119 points :)
I use words with friends though so I can use obscure words without resorting to a dictionary.
I tend to start with the board first rather than the letters I have and work out where I can go easily and with the most points then fit my letters around previously played words. Finding a word first with my letters is harder to do imo

JeReviens · 14/01/2018 21:37

Highest was something like 540. If you get the high scoring but difficult to use singles like Q, Z etc look for a triple word square and try to play the letter so it scores both ways on that square. QI, KY, ZA and ZO etc are your friends

  1. AVAUNTED using all my letters across two triples.

Do you know all the short useful words like ka, ki, ko, ky, qi, qin, xi, xu, za, zo, etc?

My highest score for one word was 177 (AVAUNTED, all my letters & covering 2 triples).

Yes to the short words: ja, jo, ka, ki, ko, ky, qat, qi, qin, xi, xu, za, zo and so on, all very useful.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 14/01/2018 21:46

Grrr sorry!

GetShitDone · 14/01/2018 21:47

My highest score was 254 for one word. Can't remember the word now though!

youwouldthink · 14/01/2018 21:47

149 across 2 triples and word was scailest...short words are a must!

LoniceraJaponica · 14/01/2018 22:04

It was something like 120. How on earth do you get 540?

RiceBurner · 14/01/2018 22:25

I think OP means highest game score?

JeReviens · 14/01/2018 22:31

I was taking it as highest game score! Obviously nobody could get 540 on a single turn!

DianaBlythe · 14/01/2018 22:34

Aim for big scores by using all your letters, and not just the 2 letter words. Save up some common letter groups to make long words -ier, -iest, -ily, -ing. Getting long words across 2 doubles gives you quadruple.

I used to play very defensively with lots of 2 letter words but does lead to a very closed board. Have improved slightly now I have opened my game up a bit.

Best score ever was 542 I think.

TinWhistleTunes · 14/01/2018 22:38

I can't remember what my mum's highest score was, but it was ridiculous, something like .. she played an eight letter word across two triples, with the Q on the double

perhapstomorrow · 14/01/2018 22:51

Started playing scrabble on my phone recently. Highest score so far is 429 with a highest word of 90. I am very slow at taking my turn though!!

scrabbler3 · 14/01/2018 22:58

My best word was ebaying which started on a red square with an x beneath it, so I scored a shedload of points. I wasn't sure that it would be an acceptable word, but it was.

londonrach · 14/01/2018 23:02

GoingRogue · 14/01/2018 23:03

JeReviens · 14/01/2018 23:09

I played with my grandmother too londonrach - from about the age of 10. I also miss her and our scrabble sessions a lot 😢

Munrow · 15/01/2018 08:05

So helpful! Thank you for the shorter words with the difficult consonants . I realise now had I had a broader vocabulary I would have thrashed my oh!

How often are you using your turn to swap letters?

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 15/01/2018 08:10

I used to play with my gran too.

I never use my turn to swap letters unless I feel I don't have a choice, if there's any chance at all of doing a word I prefer to do it.

heartyrebel · 15/01/2018 08:16

I'm another who played with my nana. We'd sit there for 8 hours playing .
When she passed away I kept her scrabble board. It's probably over 50 yrs old and has her highest scoring word written on the box . Miss her a lot too

NoMoreUsernames · 15/01/2018 08:26

Not the same but this is my top score on solitaire scrabble, been trying to beat my pb for ages. It takes a lot of planning and a lot of luck!

To ask you what your highest Scrabble score is?
ClimbingCatBells · 15/01/2018 08:40

I play weekly with dh.I usually only score 280 a game he gets around 100 more.
I play for relaxation but would like to improve my game (embarrassed when the kids ask who won)
I have never changed letters as it would mean missing a turn and losing points.Maybe it would help me get a higher score I think I will try it.
I love hearing about all your grandmother's playing Scrabble with you, what special memories especially writing the best word on the box.
