To be pissed off at next door

They got a dog before Christmas,the poor thing is left alone all day long locked in the bathroom.(The reason I know this is because of the echo sound next to our bathroom).It's been left alone all day yesterday,all night last night,no lights on or cars there (they have two cars).The howling and crying has kept me,my ds and husband awake all night :( poor thing sounds so forlorn and not even been out for one wee!
Was i being unreasonable to post a polite note through the door regarding the noise?My husband is half deaf so for him to hear it too is something.He's gone to work 7am shattered,son gone to school feeling the same.We have a dog and understand we can't take him everywhere with us but all day and all night?I feel so sorry for the poor thing Sad

You need to go further than a little note. I'd be phoning the police, the council and the RSPCA (who will probably just check it has food and water and not much else, but I'd damn well be making them aware)

If the dog is new to them or a puppy then it might get a bit distressed but from your description this is way over the top. I would have a word with the local dog warden. ring your local council and they will give you the number they can give you and them advice.

that's awful. i don't even like dogs particularly and yet i was really upset reading your post. i would report them to someone ASAP that would do something about it. good luck op

You do seem a little more concerned about the noise affecting you than the welfare of the actual dog OP. Poor thing.

Is also not be particularly inclined towards being polite to people who mistreated animals.

That poor dog, I understand your annoyance at the noise but I'd be more concerned about the dog's welfare tbh.
If the neighbours are reasonable people I'd go round and speak to them but if you think they could be argumentative then I'd just report and as soon as possible, that dog has been left alone too long already.
Perhaps going forward you could offer to look in on the dog for the neighbours if they need to be away again to feed, walk and let it out for a wee?

I wouldn't speak to them, if you need to report them for animal cruelty later, you need to be able to waft around looking innocent

I'd let the RSPCA know and leave it there. but if you see the neighbours, just behave as you normally would.

Echo you need to contact RSPCA asap. Don't even think about speaking to the neighbours.

Please please report this! It's dreadful behaviour on their part.

That’s is just plain cruel. Note is a waste of time, RSPCA for the poor dog. Puppies need company , they do not sound as though they have a clue. Despite my dogs having eaten my £400 glasses this morning, I still love them and would never leave them alone that long. 5 to 6 hours is an absolute maximum and then very rarely and I leave the radio on for them.

Report them FFS. It may be annoying for you but there's an animal in real distress. Don't talk to them - they won't be 'reasonable people' if they are prepared to do this in the first place. Report.

If you are currently friendly with the neighbours I would speak to them, they may be inexperienced with dogs and also have no idea how upset the dog is at being left. Are they usually out all day and night? If they are uncooperative then I would call RSPCA.

I also have a dog and he gets very stressed when he is left alone, it's never for extended periods of time but I once recorded him and he made a lot of noise the whole time we were out which was very distressing to see. I'm rambling but point is they may not know. Good luck

Talk to your neighbours if you're on reasonably friendly terms. Tell them their puppy is distressed and that his behaviour is keeping your family up unreasonably.

If it's not sorted immediately, get on the phone and call the RSPCA, etc

I'd be inclined to report them too, but having tried reporting to the RSPCA previously I know they are fucking useless! It's always worth trying but report to whoever you can, council (noise), rspca, dog warden? etc.

Is it a dog or a puppy?
After reading various threads on here the RSPCA aren't always that bothered if the dog has food/water/shelter depending on the length of time it is alone.

Is it possible there was someone in the house but they didn't want to make you aware? Maybe young teen told not to answer the door for example?

I live next to 2 dogs (I don't have a dog) and they do my bloody head n TBH, but as I'm at work most days I only hear them if I'm home or during the night .

I honestly don;t know if they know how noisy the dogs are . Does your dog bark at all? Maybe they think they can let their new dog be noisy because Hey! You will understand , having a dog and they hear your dog's noise (Just to prepare you for any backlash) .

I have knocked on the door (did bugger all use though ) but I'm really not happy to listen to 90 minutes constant barking or have them in my garden, shitting Angry

There are noise abatement channels via your local council. Take notes of times and if you can , record.

But maybe start with a "D'you know just how loud your dog is?" so they know you are aware and not happy.
They can either answer "Oh sorry , we didn't" and hopefully move him and arrange for him to be kept company.
If they say "Yeah what of it"? then your next step is report them.

They'll know its you whatever happens.

I AM actually concerned for the dog's welfare as stated in my OP,there has been nobody home to speak to about it hence my note.Looking for numbers now.Thank you for all helpful advice.

We got new neighbours about a year ago. When they first moved in they left their dog at home during the day (and occasionally in the evening until about 9ish) and she barked the place down. A couple of times I said something like "Is she ok? She was barking loads yesterday?". I don't know whether she's just settled in or they now take her to work but we never hear her now.

If there's some way to bring it up very soon that might be a better place to start than reporting? As pp said, maybe they don't know about the noise, but if they'd def know it was you that reported I'd be worried about the neighbourly relationship...

Presumably they aren't feeding the dog very often either.

This sounds like neglect, awful and illegal. That poor dog Sad. Ring 101 and explain you think an animal is being left alone for ridiculous periods of time in the property, and that it's currently been left for x hours or days, and you're concerned about it's welfare.

I dread to think what conditions this dog will be found in. A woman I know evil bastard was leaving her dog locked in a cage, for days at a time, and wasn't cleaning the cage out properly in between. No food, water, or contact with anyone, laying in maybe a weeks worth of piss and shit. Another guy I know, his dog was found starved to death in a flat, locked in a kitchen for God knows how long.

Every since I heard about these cases, people I actually knew, I say report. If someone hadn't reported the woman (it was a neighbour I think, I'd love to give whoever it was a hug), her dog would have been found dead one day. Better safe than sorry, every time.

Is this a one -off being left all night?
Is he usually left all day in the bathroom (I can sort of see why they'd pick a bathroom , easier to clean up and nothing for it to scavenge)

Maybe someone was meant to drop in to let him out and feed him.

What do they usually do , is he at home all day alone? Sounds grim for the poor animal, did they actually think before getting him?

If this is the first overnight they've left him then yes you need to let them know how he has behaved and how it has impacted on you.
Hopefully they'll come round when they see your note (to apologise) .

But you cannot really tiptoe round animal neglect , which this is.

doesn't sound like it. I wouldn't be giving them any chances, I'd just report, looks like OP is doing that now.

yeah i'd just report it too - so many people get puppies without thinking through the commitment.

You can't reason with a person that thinks it's ok to leave a dog in a bathroom all day.
