A woman on my local FB group has posted a GoFundMe link asking for 27k for university fees, because she's not eligible for a loan and has decided she wants to work in TV. Makes much of how the government has screwed over students and it's an outrage etc.

In the comments, it's revealed that she has actually had four years of funding, but wants to study something different now.

Yeah, I'd retrain if someone gave me 27k too Grin Grin Grin

Wow! I’d love to see how much she gets in the end!

gunsandbanjos · 04/01/2018 16:59

Maybe she could sell off some of the brass in her neck to raise the funds.

ScreamingValenta · 04/01/2018 17:01

So would I! YANBU.

Her comments about how badly the government has treated students might be valid (obviously haven't seen them so don't know) but if I were to fund any student, it would be someone who hadn't previously had an opportunity of university education - not someone who had changed their mind.

Shakey15000 · 04/01/2018 17:04

Ye Gads. Entitled much? Some folk are actually living in cloud cuckoo land.

Fekko · 04/01/2018 17:04

She could apply for an internship programme at the BBC...

I fancy going to Miami for a holiday. Will you all chip in then?

ColdThisWinter · 04/01/2018 17:04

I’m torn as I can understand why people want to continue studying. I know someone who recently crowdfunded to enable him to do his PhD - but it’s in a field that will make a huge social difference and I did donate. However, I’d love to do a second MA but I’d not have the bravado to ask people to fund it because it’s something personal to me and not for others.

The academic in me sincerely hopes she raises the money but don’t think I’d donate in this instance - does that make sense?

MissionItsPossible · 04/01/2018 17:07

I was going to say post the link so I/we could read it but presumably it has her name on it and it would be awful if this thread got picked up by the media and trashed her career before it began.

audaciousaudrey · 04/01/2018 17:19

Maybe I'd be more likely to donate if she wanted to cure cancer or something, but not to work in TV...!

TammySwansonTwo · 04/01/2018 17:22

Well, having worked a variety of media jobs, i can already tell she'd fit right in with the entitled brass neck bastardspeople

dingdongdigeridoo · 04/01/2018 17:23

Cheeky. I think the cheekiest I’ve seen is a woman who crowdfunded a trip to Disney for her family. Nobody was terminally ill or anything, she just fancied it. And the huns actually donated.

amusedbush · 04/01/2018 17:25

I'll be self-funding my masters as of October - does anyone fancy chipping in? Grin

kathhere · 04/01/2018 17:31

Are you in southeast OP? Think we might be in same FB group

Emmageddon · 04/01/2018 17:34

I knew someone who crowdfunded for a Disneyland holiday for her and her DC. Although she never put it into words, the implication was that time was running out due to a significant life limiting illness. She got her holiday. She's now crowdfunding for the next one.

Llangollen · 04/01/2018 17:34

Well if people are silly enough to give her money, it's worth asking. Not harming anybody.Good luck to her

brizzledrizzle · 04/01/2018 17:36

Nothing surprises me any more TBH.

I want to go round the world this summer, I'm not going to do anything to help disadvantaged people whilst I'm in the developing world but can you all donate £100 please?

It's going to be a really self fulfilling experience and I'll send you all a postcard if I can be bothered

chocolateworshipper · 04/01/2018 17:36

guns Grin

audaciousaudrey · 04/01/2018 17:37

Yeah SE kath and I’m surprised she hasn’t been torn to shreds!

I mentioned it to a friend and he knows someone who crowd-funded herself a pony when her old one died - and got it!

londonista · 04/01/2018 17:38

I think i have seen this FB post. TBH I don't think it's ridiculously cheeky. I won't donate, myself, but I don't mind her asking. Wasn't she going to become a child therapist of some sort? (If indeed it is the post I'm thinking of)

audaciousaudrey · 04/01/2018 17:41

No, she has a dream of working in TV... I looked up the course and it’s in Media Studies.

It’s on a FB group and all the replies have been oddly restrained so far! Grin

I chipped in towards someone's MA who contacted followers of his blog, I understood his career aims and wanted to support, but I only contributed a small amount. I could see the use he'd put the qualification to and I wanted to encourage him. Presumably she is only expecting people who feel the same about her aspirations to support?

ReanimatedSGB · 04/01/2018 17:43

Just don't donate, if you don't agree with a crowdfunder. No one is obliged to give money, but given current economic inequality, I'm not appalled by people asking, either.
When you think about it, running some kind of crowdfunder is at least as much 'work' as many low-paid, low-status, pointless jobs. You've got to draw up your page, jump through whatever loopholes there are and keep plugging away on your social media - it could be said that crowdfundees 'earn' what money they can get.

londonista · 04/01/2018 17:43

The one I'm thinking of was looking for £8k on JustGiving to finish her final year of a child psychotherapist degree. She'd funded the first 4 years herself and she was facing prospect of having to drop out.

She got ripped to shreds for asking, rest assured! No restraint shown, sadly.

spangles1963 · 04/01/2018 17:44

She's sounds like such a CF,she'll probably get it. Angry

kathhere · 04/01/2018 17:44

The one I’m looking at is a different post Londonista. Looking at tv career.

audaciousaudrey · 04/01/2018 17:47

That seems totally different, and of benefit to society Smile

The post I’m referring to is on an unrelated local FB group with c.15k members, and she has no experience or demonstrable talent in the field. It’s a ‘dream.’

Fair play to her I say! Massively cheeky but if it pays off, worth it!
