Another great for society EU scheme that won't exist in the future

www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/news/local-news/swap-your-old-bike-lock-982364.amp stuff like this where people can get a massively subsidised bike lock to encourage cycling will no longer exist after brexit. Aibu to think most brexiters didn't know all the good work the EU does?

OP posts:

You can buy many bike locks for £350m

Angrybird345 · 29/12/2017 08:45

The project is funded by the department of transport. It says that on the article. Why will it not exist after Brexit? Big assumption!

juliesaway · 29/12/2017 08:46

Nothing to stop the uk govt offering a similar scheme in future, minus the EU beaurocracy which deals with it.

abbsisspartacus · 29/12/2017 08:46

You can get bike locks from poundland what am i missing?

Angrybird345 · 29/12/2017 08:47

Looking forward to Brexit..... my bike got stolen and it’s because of Brexit!! Lol

hazeyjane · 29/12/2017 08:56

I'm a bit more worried about things like the effect on the funding and sharing of genetic research projects post Brexit. But yes, Brexit is a shit show.

Battleax · 29/12/2017 08:57

That's probably not the best example to support your POV, TBF.

Rebeccaslicker · 29/12/2017 08:59

There are many things we will miss out on. I am worried about medicine and research particularly.

But not encouraging more cyclists? Well done OP, you've found the silver lining to the Brexit that I didn't know existed!

Grin Grin and a thousand times Grin

naturalnursery · 29/12/2017 09:19

Why on earth wouldn't you want to encourage more cyclists? The monetary cost of car congestion is more than the fictitious amount EU membership costs.

Add to that the cost to the NHS and employers caused by ill health due to traffic induced pollution and our lack of exercise and you are talking millions every week.

Not to mention the huge distress caused to hundreds of families each week due to the 1,000s who die prematurely due to pollution or lack of exercise.

Increasing bike use WILL save the NHS millions; will improve health for millions of people, cut pollution and make our cities much nicer to live in.

This would look good on the side of a bus.

1DAD2KIDS · 29/12/2017 09:30

Fucking lying Brexit campaign, they never told me free bike locks where at stake. How do I tell my children the selfish adults took their bicycle away?

Rebeccaslicker · 29/12/2017 09:33

Because many cyclists are a massive smug pain in the ass for both pedestrians and drivers. Next!

naturalnursery · 29/12/2017 10:14

Or perhaps drivers are anti social murders? I'm not anti car (currently a passenger in one) but I do find many car drivers are intellectually unable to see further than their bonnet and exceptionally selfish to boot.

Rebeccaslicker · 29/12/2017 10:24

How delightful to criticise drivers whilst happily riding in a car :)

Do enjoy being held up at traffic lights whilst staring at hundreds of Lycra clad bum holes which all push through the lights on every side of the car and leave you to queue, won't you?!

naturalnursery · 29/12/2017 10:44

At least I'm able to grasp the concept that all modes of transport have their place in a well balanced, modern transport policy that enables everyone to get where they need to be in the most efficient manner.

Cycling's not for everyone, that's cool. But I do wish car drivers were able to consider the bigger picture and not fall back on DM rhetoric every time cycling is mentioned.

Rebeccaslicker · 29/12/2017 10:46

yeah yeah, you just enjoy looking at those bum holes Grin

makeourfuture · 29/12/2017 10:53

all push through the lights on every side of the car and leave you to queue

The thing is, "filtering" of bicycles forward actually makes the entire road function more efficiently.

Rebeccaslicker · 29/12/2017 11:00

Try standing at the side and watching how many cars get through once the horde of bumholes has pedalled its way through. Try sitting in a taxi and watching your meter tick up. It's great fun, really it is :)

naturalnursery · 29/12/2017 11:01

Guess you just proved my point.

Rebeccaslicker · 29/12/2017 11:07

Well, as I get the train and walk at least 5 days a week, not really, no. I just have eyes in my head and don't kid myself that I'm some great ecowarrior when actually I'm just a person with a sweaty bumhole who's quite happy to hold up everyone else!

MsJuniper · 29/12/2017 11:37

While it's not the most pressing issue, I wish the govt had issued a leaflet with loads of info about all the schemes the EU has brought our way, showing people what a positive effect it has had rather than that grey piece of paper trying to bore everyone into voting Remain.

naturalnursery · 29/12/2017 11:48

Nope, as you've still not come up with a single non-selfish point.

Let me help you.

A typical traffic lane can accommodate 2,000 cars per hour, or 14,000 bicycles - increasing cycling rates speeds up the traffic for everyone as it makes the best use of space. Efficient use of scarce resources is the logical solution.

But no, you don't want to engage in a meaningful discussion cos THE LYCRA! THE LYCRA!

Rebeccaslicker · 29/12/2017 12:22

Ah statistics. They work so well in real life.

Go down to the embankment and watch for 30 mins. You'll see.
