Church bells thundering at 11.20 pm

AIBU to think it’s unreasonable to have church bells thundering at 11.20pm or have I just lost perspective as finally managed to get my DDs to sleep and they’ve now been woken up.

Just to be clear we live across from the church and the bells go every 15 mins all day every day and this doesn’t bother us. This was relentless really loud ringing which went on for 10 mins.

It's the start of midnight mass surely Confused

RunningOutOfCharge · 24/12/2017 23:36

Why did your DD's need you to get them to sleep?

oliveinacampervan · 24/12/2017 23:37

That is actually quite bad.

There is midnight mass at the Church near me, but no bells going off. Midnight mass or not, there should be no thundering bells. (Not at nearly half eleven pm!) Many people do not go and it's not fair to keep them all awake.

TheQueenOfWands · 24/12/2017 23:37

It's midnight mass. Because of Christmas.

Quite a big thing for many people.

PinkAvocado · 24/12/2017 23:38

Why is that even a relevant question, Running?!

ohidoliketobe · 24/12/2017 23:39

Alongside Easter, this is the most important event in the Christian calandar. YABU.

WillowWept · 24/12/2017 23:40

I think once a year for Christmas is reasonable 😊

DonkeyOaty · 24/12/2017 23:40

Lovely bit of clangour to welcome the... Nope. Best bet to be all PollyAnna:
All over by 1am. Yay! #CalfsFootJelly

Lashalicious · 24/12/2017 23:43

It’s one night a year, midnight Mass, try to think of it that way. It is frustrating though to have loud noises after you’ve finally gotten your young ones to sleep on Christmas Eve. I love church bells....can relate, my dc has trouble going to sleep every night since the day he was born (drove me nuts), not just Christmas Eve and I am so tired and grumpy, that is the one thing that makes me really mad, lack of sleep.

RunningOutOfCharge · 24/12/2017 23:43

pink Wink

Poppywoppydoda · 24/12/2017 23:43

Yes, I know it’s a call to prayer but surely those who arrange for the bells to ring know there are children who will be woken.

If midnight mass is a big thing for you then do you need to have really loud bells to tell you? Pre children, when I loved going to midnight mass, I never needed loud bells to tell me.

Dds needed help getting to sleep as excited about tomorrow.

RunningOutOfCharge · 24/12/2017 23:45

Oh, excited about Christmas was he?

Well....the xmas eve bells are part of the xmas tradition. But you want to shush the age old tradition for the fakery

I'm Grin at the irony

More xmas madness!

planetclom · 24/12/2017 23:47

Presumably the church as been there a few hundred years so not a shock that it is a church, that they have services and that they ring the bells.
Yabu I am afraid

Poppywoppydoda · 24/12/2017 23:48

It isn’t a tradition to ring the bells where I’m from.

OP posts:
Poppywoppydoda · 24/12/2017 23:49

No not a shock it rings bells - I like the bells normally
I also like carol singing but if someone came Carol singing at 11.20 I’d think there were BU

Growingboys · 24/12/2017 23:49

YABU. It's Midnight Mass FGS!

StatelessPrincess · 24/12/2017 23:50

It's only once a year ffs

BulletFox · 24/12/2017 23:50

Although I understand where you're coming from it's a little bit unreasonable!

It's only one night, it's tradition, and I for one love hearing them

juliesaway · 24/12/2017 23:51

Be3Al2SiO36 · 24/12/2017 23:52

A Daily Fail journalist surely? Trying to invoke a bit of religious backlash?

RunningOutOfCharge · 24/12/2017 23:53

And surely the bells were just, you know, ringing, like normal

Not thundering

Severide08 · 24/12/2017 23:54

Don’t like bells? So why the fuck did you buy a house near a church?

JaffaCakes4TeaNow · 24/12/2017 23:57
