Church bells thundering at 11.20 pm

AIBU to think it’s unreasonable to have church bells thundering at 11.20pm or have I just lost perspective as finally managed to get my DDs to sleep and they’ve now been woken up.

Just to be clear we live across from the church and the bells go every 15 mins all day every day and this doesn’t bother us. This was relentless really loud ringing which went on for 10 mins.

Been to plenty of Midnight Masses and Watchnight Services and they've never needed bloody bells to get people in.

TheFlis12345 · 24/12/2017 23:59

Unless you were living there before the church was built, YABU.

Poppywoppydoda · 24/12/2017 23:59

Not ringing normally
Same note over and over as loud as possible
When it’s a wedding there’s a nice tune
This was relentless bong bong bong bong bong bong ....
Anyway you’ve made DH’s day as he also thought I was BU
Have a great Xmas everyone

As loud as possible? They don't come with a volume button.... they are just bells!

Unless a recording through a loudspeaker

ChristinaParsons · 25/12/2017 00:02

Bells still ringing here. But heyho being able to see a church from your property adds £1k to the sale price

bayseyan · 25/12/2017 00:02

Yabu. It's Christmas Eve in a Christian country, midnight mass is one of the most important of the year for many people. If it was every weekend yanbu but for this one night I don't see a problem with the bells.

Seniorcitizen1 · 25/12/2017 00:04

Did you not notice the church when you bought the house?

HoneyBeeMum1 · 25/12/2017 00:07

Totally unreasonable.

You sound like a proper sour puss.

BulletFox · 25/12/2017 00:07

At least DH is happy Grin

Dc will soon settle. At least you're primed for next year.

DeepanKrispanEven · 25/12/2017 00:12

Bells don't thunder. And if it's only one note, it's only one bell - on which, as pointed out, there is no volume control.

Viviennemary · 25/12/2017 00:13

I think that's cheeky and inconsiderate of them. There might be sick people around trying to get to sleep as well as children. I don't think many churches peal their bells at that time of night even on Christmas eve. Personally I like church bells but not everyone does or wants to hear them late at night.

crunchymint · 25/12/2017 00:13

Sorry I think YABU. It is midnight mass.

PeonyBucket · 25/12/2017 00:13

It isn’t a tradition to ring the bells where I’m from

It's obviously a tradition to ring the bells in the church you live opposite. YABU.

DeepanKrispanEven · 25/12/2017 00:25

The bells will have been there decades, even centuries, before the people living around them. If you choose to live near a church with bells, this is a risk you have accepted; it would be considerably cheekier to expect a centuries-long tradition to come to an end for your convenience. If it's a problem, you buy ear plugs.

Whaaaattt?! Of course YABU, it's Christmas Eve! The time you think they will be "thundering out" is for Midnight Mass service, surely?
Confused
Church bells post bringing back lovely childhood village memories, and them bonging every half an hour so you always knew what time it was.
Sunday morning proper full on church bells too for church.
Still does it when I go to visit my parents.
You'd hate it lol if you're such a grump for just the Christmas bells. Grin

NorthernLurker · 25/12/2017 00:26

The bell is calling the faithful to worship on the day we celebrate the birth of Christ. It's really not about your dc......unless one of them is also a messiah?

Cherrycokewinning · 25/12/2017 00:28

Bells at midnight though? In many years of midnight mass I’ve never heard such a thing. It might be Christmas but it would still be noise pollution, not sure why the church would bother

PumpkinSquash · 25/12/2017 00:30

not sure why the church would bother

'Cos Christmas.

lalliella · 25/12/2017 00:31

🎵 and the bells are ringing out for Christmas Day 🎶
YABU

SE13Mummy · 25/12/2017 00:39

Ringing the bells for midnight mass and 'ringing in the new year' was something I used to enjoy doing as a teenaged bellringer. Most of the churches near us did it (if they had proper bells). I'm sorry the sound of the bells woke your DDs though.

fizzicles · 25/12/2017 00:51

Church and bells were there way before you. YABU.

Fffion · 25/12/2017 00:53

Church bells - all part of the magic

JaneJeffer · 25/12/2017 01:01

The bells, the bells....BiscuitXmas Grin

ChristinaParsons · 25/12/2017 01:02

Someone ask her if she got married in a church and had bells rung. I think she did. And they woke my children up from their afternoon nap. And it took me ages to get them to settle again. And it was my birthday the next day, not only that but it was the cats birthday the day after. We were all far too exhausted to enjoy anything and all because we bought a house near a church that had been there for 2000 years. How dare they 😂
