to think AI will kill us all?

I know that's hyperbolic but some of the advances in technology are happening so rapidly and quickly surpassing anything that humans have done (such as the AI that learnt chess from scratch and became world champion in less than 4 hours!).

We're fucked aren't we Grin Shock.

No, I don't think so

PenelopePimpleBottom · 22/12/2017 12:50

Royally

HolyMountain · 22/12/2017 12:51

All Inclusive was my first thought, all that free food and drink will indeed kill us.

I’ll get my coat < heads out of door>

scurryfunge · 22/12/2017 12:53

Holy, was about to post the same (leaving quietly)

TheFaerieQueene · 22/12/2017 12:58

As long as we can still plug out the plug we should be ok. Xmas Grin

Holy Grin. It was my first thought. My second was, meh. I can think of worse ways to go.

Weedsnseeds1 · 22/12/2017 14:12

I initially assumed artificial insemination ( live in a dairy farming area) ....

MadameJosephine · 22/12/2017 14:19

I think it will change ‘us’ but not necessarily for the worse. My son is studying AI at the moment and while a lot of it goes over my head I find the transhumanist movem fascinating.

AnneLovesGilbert · 22/12/2017 14:23

Yes, absolutely.

For years DH has chuckled at my fear of the robots going to kill us all. Well... More she more stuff is in the news every week which shows it’s NOT an unfounded fear.

If you’ve seen I robot you know that one day they’ll realise the best thing for the planet is to wipe out humanity. And we’ve invited them into our home to tell us what the weather is, to learn and anticipate what music we like, to know when we’re home and away. What price convenience? It’s sheer bloody madness.

Theducksarenotmyfriends · 22/12/2017 14:34

AI will either be the saviour of humanity or will be our doom a la skynet - those are the only two options I'm afraid. As long as they stick to Asimov's laws of robotics then we'll be fine Smile

RavingRoo · 22/12/2017 14:46

If you teach someone clever chess for the first time, they too are likely to create moves ‘never seen before’. In fact I’m willing to bet most of these ‘new’ moves have actually been played in homes across the globe - just not in the professional circuit where plays tend to be structured around tactics.

MsHomeSlice · 22/12/2017 14:51

i think we'll be sorry before the robots are for sure!!

Also hate it when you see those R&D youtube videos when they are demonstrating how fabulous the robots are by trying to push them over or kicking them....or that one with the parcel carrying robot where they keep moving the parcel or knocking it out of its grasp...UNKIND!!
You can see the robots remembering!

RedTitsMcGinty · 22/12/2017 14:59

It won’t. I work in AI. Don’t worry about the machines rising up; worry about things like data privacy, security, and technology that lacks diversity and excludes populations and reinforces negative stereotypes.

CurryWorst · 22/12/2017 15:05

They aren't happening nearly as rapidly as people think. And like RedTits says, there are so many other things that are real that you should be worrying about.....

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/12/2017 15:08

As long as they stick to Asimov's laws of robotics then we'll be fine

But surely AI learns and can therefore think, 'these idiots kill each other, why should I stick to my programming?' or something...

LiveLifeWithPassion · 22/12/2017 15:16

Before that happens, we ll be so dumbed down by our media being controlled so we can only watch reality shows and Fox News, all our libraries will be shut and our only access to books will be easily rewritten ebooks, surveillance in our homes through our TVs and home control systems out of our homes on our phones and a government that controls it all.
We re doomed, I tell ya.

TressiliansStone · 22/12/2017 15:17

worry about things like data privacy, security, and technology that lacks diversity and excludes populations and reinforces negative stereotypes.

I do.

I've also started keeping my family history research a lot more private, because I have a horrible feeling all these online trees (of variable quality) are going to be misused as genetic profiling really takes off.

TinyRick · 22/12/2017 15:18

Well...

They won't keep putting up with this shit forever:

GunnyHighway · 22/12/2017 15:26

I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle!

Vitalogy · 22/12/2017 15:30

It will if we let it.

We are still far from Artificial General Intelligence. As for sentient machines - we might never have those. Right now I’d be more worried about having a digital assistant in my home, always listening in, with no corporate accountability or ethics standards.

Babababababybel23 · 22/12/2017 15:56

It won't be ai that takes us out. It will be the person who designed the specific ai e.g a robot. If you design something that can learn then you should know the consequences
