Speeding camera

I was caught speeding 82 on dual carriageway... (I was actually on way to funeral... Truth!)

I've had one of those notice of intended prosecution.

Aibu hoping that I can opt for speed awareness... Rather than points?

Does anyone know process....? Can't get through to police and can't find online?

Don’t think you’ll be offered the course.

FlouncyDoves · 08/12/2017 14:30

Lucky you’re not having to attend your own funeral, or those of someone you could’ve killed.

nikkylou · 08/12/2017 14:31

It would normally give you your options on the letter I believe. If they haven't offered it you can't do it.

There's also certain criteria to qualify. You may have been going too fast

ZigZagandDustin · 08/12/2017 14:31

Usually first offence is speeding awareness, but there is a threshold. Did the letter say how to pay your fine and what points you'd be getting? If not then it might come as a follow up letter. If your punishment is already in your letter then I doubt it.

It's completely irrelevant that you were going to a funeral. I wouldn't even mention that to friends.

skinnyamericano · 08/12/2017 14:31

I’m afraid you were too far over the limit to be offered a course.

Emerald92 · 08/12/2017 14:32

Very helpful @FlouncyDoves Hmm

Lindy2 · 08/12/2017 14:32

I'm pretty sure you must only be a certain % above the speed limit to be offered the course. It looks like you are above that limit so it will be points and a fine I'm afraid.

LIZS · 08/12/2017 14:32

Unlikely I suspect. You need to send the nip back confirming your identity then they will write to you with any options.

MissEliza · 08/12/2017 14:33

Your reasons for speeding are irrelevant. You're still a danger to yourself and others. I believe you only get offered a course if you're slightly over.

scurryfunge · 08/12/2017 14:33

Fill in the NIP and they may offer you the course.

pudcat · 08/12/2017 14:34

Depends if you have been caught before and have points.

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 08/12/2017 14:34

What was the speed limit?
The letter I got listed 3 options, points & a fine-the amount of each depending on how far above the limit you were. Prosecution in court-you can request it goes to court I think if you want to deny or challenge them? or speed awareness course. What you get depends on how far over the limit you were...
I had to fill form in with my details & return it, they then contact you to let you know.

I got a letter a couple of weeks ago and the letter I had gave options - pay the fine or speed awareness. I was going 35 in a 30 zone, so maybe like PPs have said it depends on how much over the limit you were.

Flicketyflack · 08/12/2017 14:35

Did speed awareness course this time last year, twas very informative 😉

Flicketyflack · 08/12/2017 14:37

Ps if you are over the speed limit it does not matter we were told that there is not a % thing going on!

underneaththeash · 08/12/2017 14:37

I'm pretty sure that you will be offered a course as its between 79 and 86 in a 70mph zone.

Interestingly in Northern Europe where the accident stats are similar to our own, most of the motorway's speed limits are 120-130km/hr which is 76-80 mph.

Flicketyflack · 08/12/2017 14:37

Kent

pudcat · 08/12/2017 14:38

When you have sent your details back then they will inform you of the options - if any

meredintofpandiculation · 08/12/2017 14:39

Very helpful @FlouncyDoves hmm Would the perpetrator of any other offence be getting all the help and support that the OP is getting? 12mph is probably not an accidental drifting over the limit. Nowadays, most people regard drunk driving with a fair degree of disapproval, but I remember when it was just a bit of fun. We won't stop people speeding until we as a society have started to feel it is not a good thing, and we're a long way from that!

Cardilover · 08/12/2017 14:40

I think the NOIP mentioned it as an option that might be offered, but it wasn’t actually offered until I’d responded. You have to reply as to whether you accept you were at fault or are appealing it first.

wasonthelist · 08/12/2017 14:40

I love the sanctimonious responses implying speeding is directly and immediately related to death. Whilst I obviously don’t advocate breaking the law, 69mph doesn’t automatically make you safe, just legal, and 71 doesn’t automatically make you dangerous.

meredintofpandiculation · 08/12/2017 14:41

The speed awareness course can be offered if

  1. your speed was between certain limits AND
  2. it is more than 3 years since you last did a speed awareness course
meredintofpandiculation · 08/12/2017 14:44

I love the sanctimonious responses implying speeding is directly and immediately related to death. Whilst I obviously don’t advocate breaking the law, 69mph doesn’t automatically make you safe, just legal, and 71 doesn’t automatically make you dangerous. Indeed, and that's one reason why they don't chase you up if you're less than 10% over the limit.
