I was caught speeding 82 on dual carriageway... (I was actually on way to funeral... Truth!)

I've had one of those notice of intended prosecution.

Aibu hoping that I can opt for speed awareness... Rather than points?

Does anyone know process....? Can't get through to police and can't find online?

There were several repeat offenders on the one i did a few weeks ago. And the excellent instructer expressly said we didn't have to declare it as a conviction to insurers and mine didn't ask! X

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 08/12/2017 18:00

Mini, they ask about points, as you would expect - not speed awareness courses. If you complete the course then you're no longer 'on the hook' for that offence. The insurance companies have no access to the database, only the police do and the records are kept for 6 years (I think). After that point they're deleted.

The courses were four years apart. You can go on them every 3 years.

Roussette · 08/12/2017 18:02

If I was asked I would declare it. If I'm not asked I don't volunteer it. The teachers on the course said that is what I should do. They said there is nowhere that insurance companies can go and check, it is up to the individual insurance company.

MongerTruffle · 08/12/2017 18:04

they don't chase you up if you're less than 10% over the limit

The Crown Prosecution Service changed that recently. The 10% + 2 mph no longer applies.

Loz90333 · 08/12/2017 18:47

Speak to the police force that issued the ticket, my friends mum had the same thing, on her way to a funeral (close relative) she explained the situation and gave proof of death and the fine was over turned. May not work if the person wasn't a close relative though.

pisacake · 08/12/2017 18:48

yes it does.

Usually the ratio is 110% of the speed limit, so at 80+ mph in a 70 limit you wouldn't be offered it.

Thanks for helpful answers!
Will return NIP and hope they offer SAC

I'm fascinated to learn that if you are driving to a funeral you have carte blanche to drive well over the limit Hmm WTF does that have to do with why you were speeding?

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 08/12/2017 21:05

Um... Yes, I shouldn't have been speeding... Silvery surfer...if you can't see the potential reasons for someone inadvertently speeding....!

There were new roadworks, I was delayed...I didn't realise my speed.

I didn't want to not be respectful to my dead friend and his grieving family.... And be late to his funeral....

I had left a good extra 30 mins earlier...

Where do you all get your cheap petrol? Drag goes up as square of speed. Oh well, sod the kids, eh?

Inappropriate speed kills - as proved today with all the dickheads crashing. However the limits apply to us all so suck it up.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/12/2017 21:20

Not all though. I switched to Churchill this year and while they asked about points speed awareness courses weren’t mentioned

ninjapants · 08/12/2017 21:23

Speed awareness courses aren't offered in Scotland, so if that's where it happened then it won't be an option available to you

Sallystyle · 08/12/2017 21:31

I think very few people do 70MPH on a dual carriage way/motor way.

I was quite surprised by how fast people were going when we were on the motorway the other day. So many were easily doing 90MPH.

It seems pretty rare to see anyone actually stick to 70MPH in clear conditions doesn't it?

I am a nervous passenger. It scared me seeing so many cars well above the speed limit.

everybodylovesabosom · 08/12/2017 22:31

In my area you are offered the course (if speed was within % of the limit and you haven't done one within last 3 years) AFTER you have returned the NIP.

Thanks for all the advice people.
NIP already sent back

Completely agree with @flouncydoves

sheepysheep · 09/12/2017 16:11

I was offered (and took) the speed awareness course - I was zapped doing 81 on a dual carriageway. First letter was a NIP which went to my boss Blush as it was a company car. I then received a letter offering me points, SAC or the opportunity to challenge. The SAC was really worthwhile and I learnt a lot. The instructors were not at all sanctimonious or judgemental (unlike some of the helpful posters on this thread). I was caught in North Wales where they are fairly hot on speed trapping (I don’t normally speed but I was travelling back from hideous family visit and couldn’t wait to get away). I did my course in North Yorkshire though - once you choose to accept the SAC you get sent Internet links to a central booking site which allows you to book a course date / location convenient to you.
