This is really weird imo, there’s 20 years between us and if I mention anything she goes out and buys it before I have chance that turns it round like I’m copying her!
What’s that all about!?

So far she’s been asking me what I’m having in my house, we’re mid renovation, I showed her some wallpaper samples I have next min there all up I her house!
She criticised what carpets I was getting because I decided on the same one through out the whole house and she thought I should have coloured ones in the DD’s rooms guess what? She’s just had a quote for all hers doing the same!
She asked me what I wanted for Christmas I said money as I’m saving up for a certain type of shoe, she’s only gone and bought them herself today!!
There’s plenty of more things I could pick out but it’s just really weird I think and bluddie annoying because she makes out that I copied her! 🙄

Not unreasonable of you at all. Either a) show her rubbish stuff and then when she buys it and wonders why you didn’t, just say you changed your mind or b) tell her you haven’t decided yet.

Just start showing her ludicrous stuff that you're "definitely" going to buy, have some fun with it, I would!

I forgot she also copied my coat I had on hold to pick up tomorrow! Won’t be getting it now.

I’ve tried not to tell her things but you know when it just slips out, I never think anything of it then the next time we go it’s like a fashion show of ‘look what I’ve just bought myself’ and that’s when I realise and I could kick myself. The worst part is she actually acts like she had no idea it’s what I wanted!

Wear the exact same outfit everytime you see her, and scrape your hair into a pony tail with a plain band.

Tell her you've gone vegan.

Stuff your bra and say you've had a boob job.

Ask her if she's found Jesus. Or Budha. Or Yoda.

Tell her all about your ironwoman marathon training.

Get an arty friend to Sharpie a massive tattoo of Nigel Farage on your back, which you will show MIL saying how pleased you are to have something so unique.

Tell her you've had your nipples pierced. And your clitoris.

Ask her if she's ever been to Afghanistan - you're thinking of booking a holiday. Or to Thailand, where you can get a free flight if you just take in some little packages for a friend of a friend.

Say you've taken up smoking a pipe. And Morris dancing. And naturism.

Make that same outfit a Spiderman costume. With a bit of luck and an obliging friend with a talent for mimicry, you might never have to see MIL again.

It does sound annoying but at the same time is a compliment - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all.

I wouldn’t show her horrible stuff I think just keep quiet about things you are going to buy or be very vague like “I need a dress for Christmas” but claim you haven’t started looking yet or seen anything you like. At most tell her you are thinking about a different colour to the one you plan to buy.

Aww bless her - I was just about to say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery too! She obviously holds you in high esteem and wants to be just like you!

I’d prolly set her a bit too. I’d make a game of it with other family (these people that assume you are the one copying her).

Let them know you are about to gush to her about a certain piece of clothing or homewares for yourself. Start a book on how long it takes her to buy it.

Extra points if she sports it on Xmas day...

Them make this a family tradition. Hopefully soon other family will try convincing her to their purchases, and get competitive. She’ll soon catch on.

Can sympathise, my MIL is exactly the same. She seems to treat everything like a competition.

If I suggest doing something for DH, she’ll go bigger and better for FIL and make sure it gets done before I get a chance. It sounds so petty but it drives me mad.

Daren’t mention anything now, which is a shame because I’d like her opinion on things.

It still drives me mad, but once someone pointed out that she’s competing with someone 30 years younger than her it made me realise that it’s all a bit pathetic and I just have to live my life.

Hell yes, pick the shittiest tack you can find and show her that instead.
