To wonder where my flying car is?

When I was young, 2000 was going to be a sci-fi future with robots doing the housework and flying cars being commonplace. So AIBU to ask why 17 years later, I still don't have a flying car?

I know! Where the fuck is my hoverboard?

brasty · 17/11/2017 21:18

Yes hover boards looked amazing. Instead we have hand dryers in toilets.

DJBaggySmalls · 17/11/2017 21:18

I was promised disposable clothes, so no laundry to do. And a robot.

brasty · 17/11/2017 21:21

We did get disposable pants, they were awful so no one bought them.

I want the housework robot you mentioned! Now that would be a game changer. I hate housework (but I love a clean house).

A hover board would have been fun...the closest we've come is those shitty ones on wheels that all the kids wanted for Christmas a few years ago, but were prone to explode.

SlackerMum1 · 17/11/2017 21:26

Also self tying sneakers.... promises were made people!!!

brasty · 17/11/2017 21:27

Don't those laces work then, that you never need to tie?

Also self tying sneakers.... promises were made people!!!

Nike made a special edition trainers www.engadget.com/amp/2016/11/14/nikes-self-lacing-hyperadapt-shoes-cost-720/

SpikeGilesSandwich · 17/11/2017 21:42

I desperately want one of those futuristic hairdryers that you just sit under briefly and it drys and styles your hair in an instant. I think Mrs Jetson had one? When do we get those?

brasty · 17/11/2017 21:44

Spike In the same place I can buy my flying car

Edible knickers do not count as disposable clothes IMO Grin

bubblybum · 17/11/2017 22:15

And hovery beds. On Blue Peter 20 years ago they predicted we wouldn’t have beds, but float in the air instead.

Am I the only one not doing this? Blush

NotCornflakes · 17/11/2017 22:19

YANBU, and I also came on the thread to bemoan the lack of a hoverboard. We were promised them!

brasty · 17/11/2017 22:21

bubblybum Yes of course we all float in the air to sleep. You are so behind the times.

OP posts:
brasty · 17/11/2017 22:23

DJBaggySmalls What was I thinking of? I didn't actually MEAN edible knickers, they have a totally different purpose....so I am told. I meant disposable knickers.

Where's my jetpack?!

Soldiers of the Jet Age in the Wizard comic (1970) was set in 1999 and they all had jetpacks. I want mine! Grin

You do realise that you are typing this on a tiny hand held computer that contains all the worlds knowledge, films, music, a camera, a film camera, a phone. You can use it to speak to anyone in the world from anywhere in the world. You can video call people. You can send them pictures.
All on a device you can stick in your pocket.

The future is here, you just didn’t see it creeping up on you.

brasty · 17/11/2017 22:32

Yes I know we have computers, which are amazing. But I still want a flying car and robots that do all my housework. And a hover board. And self tying laces.

We were promised a paperless office - epic fail there, then.

Also, with the robot and computer revolution there would be very few jobs so most people would be able to pursue arts and advancement of the sciences and have a comfortable life as they would receive some kind of society wage.

The images we we shown looked a bit like the 60s tv The Prisoner.
Actually, with all the cctv and numbers and codes to prove we are who we say we are these days, maybe that wasn't so far fetched after all!

brasty · 17/11/2017 22:49

Paperless office [hollow laugh]
DP many years ago was actually made to transfer all data onto floppy discs, and throw away all paper copies. What a great idea that was.

Jet packs. Bloody jet packs. I remember drawing a picture when I was 7 year old about the heady days of the year 2000 when I was planning to commute to my job as an archaeologist using one. And I’m not an archeologist either. My life is a disappointment.

BartholinsSister · 18/11/2017 00:17

Your flying car is in California, being built by Terrafugia.

I'd like an Inspector Gadget car for traffic jams.
