Napping outside

The baby loves napping in his pram in his snuggle suit. The double garden doors are next to the kitchen/diner/office where someone will always be.

AIBU to think it would be Ok for him to nap in the pram just outside the garden doors? They are clear patio doors and no access to garden.

If he sleeps, why not! In a lot of EU countries babies are tucked up warm & left outside to sleep - when we lived in Germany you'd often see baby prams outside the front door, door closed, babies fast asleep! They reckon it's healthier for them because of the fresh air x

I do this daily. Just watch for cats, some really like to try to hop in too! I think my baby sleeps better outside and I love how much fresh air she gets.

Provided that someone is keeping an eye on him so that he isn't attacked by cats/foxes it sounds like a great idea.

Mine all slept better outside during the day. Don’t worry about it at all.

If that is what you want to do, and the baby is well wrapped up against the cold, and you can hear when they cry or wake up, then perfectly okay.

If you want to leave the baby at the end of the garden so the crying doesn’t interrupt your day, looking at you MIL, then YABU.

My dg used to leave my df in the pram at the bottom of the garden, his auntie used to walk up take him out and take him to her house.

But yea do it as long as baby can be seen and is warm enough will be fine

My baby is asleep in his pram in the garden at the moment, he sleeps much better in the fresh air. I just put a cat net (can be purchased cheaply on eBay) over the pram and keep a close eye on him.

The entire world leaves babies in prams to get fresh air - apart from us.

Why not? Do get a cat net and strap the baby in but otherwise I can't see why anyone would object to this. I live in Iceland and babies nap outside in their prams in all weathers here. Maybe not a full-on winter storm but sub-zero temperatures and rain/snow etc are no problem if you have the right gear. My daughter always slept wonderfully outside, much longer than if she was inside for whatever reason. We have a cosy pram with a rain cover and a very warm sleeping bag for the winter months.

I keep trying to put my son out (3 months old) and sadly he's not having it so far, just wails :( I will keep persevering though as I really think the cold air makes them sleep better.

Most people used to do this, before buggies became the norm. The large prams took up such a lot of room that it was good to get them out of the way for a bit. And the babies stayed warm and cosy however cold the weather.

DS2 sleeps much better snuggled up in the pushchair outside. We have patio doors so I stick the tv on and do a bit of ironing while I keep an eye on him.

I always did this with both of mine. They slept much better and very good for them to be in the fresh air.

I read on MN that exposure to light outside, physically develops a babies ability to sleep for longer periods of time.

If it was dangerous, the human race would be extinct by now. As PP said, make sure DC are warm enough/cool enough (depending on time of year - direct sunllight blazing down on a pram would not be good) and that someone can see/hear them if they need attention - and that the pram's on a stable surface, with a cat net in place - and off you go.

Of course! I'm in Finland and the official recommendations here are to put baby outside to nap every day. I used a battery powered baby monitor so I could hear when DD woke up (or if, you know, a cat jumped in the pram...yeah that never happened, no wolves either)

Sounds perfect to me. I'm a childminder with a secure garden (concrete wall on 2 sides, brick wall on the other). Cats aren't able to get into the garden due to the scale of the walls and our dog wouldn't be having that anyway
I always put the babies in the garden if I'm cooking in the kitchen, or clearing up after lunch etc. They sleep so much better and I really think the fresh air does them good. Also less chance of noisy toddlers waking them up.
Make sure you strap them in (obviously!)

When I was younger, mothers used to routinely put babies outside to sleep. There was a lot of worries at the time though that a cat might get in and smother a baby. In actual fact that has never happened to one single baby. So use a cat net if you want, but I doubt very much it is needed.

I’m a bit thick. How do you have garden doors that don’t have access to the garden? I’m just trying to imagine.

Common place when mine were small. Hot water bottle wrapped up and put in with them if it's really cold, cat net on, sorted!

We did it all the time with DS1 - something about being wrapped up warm (with a rain cover in bad weather!) with the cold outside meant that he slept really well.

DS2 had his best naps in the car when he was about 2 - I'd drive 5 mins up the road and back and leave him parked on the drive where I could see him out the front window.

If the baby naps well, if you can see them and their safe, go for it.

Here in Sweden it is the norm for babies and toddlers to sleep outside in prams in all weathers - at nursery as well

That makes sense Mikey thanks. I couldn’t visualise the set up of garden doors with no access to the garden.
