Winter coat smells of BO

DH bought a new coat 2 weeks ago, it’s one of those quilted Barbour type jackets but from Hackett. Cost a whopping great £375 despite being made from polyester

Every time he wears this coat it’s stinks of BO by the second day. I’ve washed this 4 times now in two weeks. This clearly won’t work being his every day coat if it needs washing after almost every wear.

How can I get the shop to accept the coat back and refund? Would you say it’s not fit for purpose?

It is fit for purpose but your DH sweats . I'm afraid that isn't their problem and I'm quite shocked that you think it is.

If it stinks of BO surely you DH just needs better hygiene?

Presumably he's too hot in it at the moment. It hasn't been cold in most of the country other than for a couple of hours on a couple of mornings.

No, I wouldn't say it's not fit for purpose. It's possible that you could try that to get a refund for your husband's deodorant, however.

You don't have a coat problem, you have a DH with BO problem, doesn't he use deodorant?? Do all his clothes stink? Why isn't he washing his own coat?

Tell your husband to dry perspirex. I have tp use it to stop excessive sweating.
Costs about £8 in boots. I promise you it works and his clothes won't smell at all.

Are you basing the not fit for puropse on the material? The fact that it's polyester wasn't hidden. There was no deception. He chose a really expensive polyester jacket.

Is it definitely BO? Does your dh actually smell?

It's nt really been that cold yet. Perhaps he should hold off wearing it at the mo until it gets really bitter as it is obviously too warm for it.
Man made materials make you sweat more and they don't breathe either, so there is nowhere for the sweat to go.
Lastly, and this is a personal one, but does your H wear clean clothes under it every time, having washed and used a good quality deo/anti perspirant? I am sure he does, but I just had to ask!
It's an expensive jacket, shame if he can't use it.

He showers twice a day religiously! He does sweat more than your average man but has never had this problem with any other item of clothing

Some of the packaging chemicals used with cheap materials can give off a sort of wet dog-come body odour scent when activated by heat.

So whilst I would normally say this isn't their problem, this could in fact be a material or packaging issue. Is he usually smelly?

Is it only the coat that smells, or does he and his other clothes smell after wearing it?

People can have smelly shoes/slippers but still shower twice a day.
I don’t think it’s the shop’s responsibility to take it back as it doesn’t suit your husband and it’s been washed.

Combination of him getting too hot in it and manmade fibres, sorry OP. Definitely not the coat's fault.

He could try waiting until it's a bit colder or taking it off if he has a bit of his journey with a train/tube etc, or perhaps wearing an extra shirt/vest or something that he can take off when he arrives?

Otherwise maybe have it cleaned, donate to a charity shop or eBay it, and find a different type

I have a hoodie that’s the same!

I don’t generally smell, honest! This hoodie which is a very fluffy and cosy man made material has to be washed after every wear due to oxter smells.

That’s ok for a hoodie though, not a coat.

Take it to the dry cleaners and ask them?

Its been washed 4 times so they won't take it back, but if you genuinely think its defective in some way then contact the manufacturer.

Sounds to me like its just too warm for the weather yet as others have said.

As an aside, £375 is a hell of a lot for a coat so I'd be wanting to keep it for years - this is not an issue I'd want to have in the first 2 weeks!

Polyester is a cheap man made material, as other posters have said - it simply doesn't breathe like natural fibres. He'd be much better off with natural fibre outerwear. An expensive mistake!

Take it back. It's worth a try. If not write to maker.
It's expensive, they should want happy customers

Febreze fabric spray, the, the odourless one for pets, can help.

But I would try for a refund first.
