Winter coat smells of BO

DH bought a new coat 2 weeks ago, it’s one of those quilted Barbour type jackets but from Hackett. Cost a whopping great £375 despite being made from polyester

Every time he wears this coat it’s stinks of BO by the second day. I’ve washed this 4 times now in two weeks. This clearly won’t work being his every day coat if it needs washing after almost every wear.

How can I get the shop to accept the coat back and refund? Would you say it’s not fit for purpose?

Missingstreetlife - Take it back. It's worth a try.

I was just going to say this. Where did he buy this coat OP? Some high end shops will refund for virtually any reason to keep good will. they can afford to because their profit margin is so high

Mr DH had this problem with a wool mix jacket. It just sushi despite hardly being worn. It was a mystery as noone of his other clothes smelled. We had to throw it out unfortunately. Sorry you spent such a great amount of money on it.

Lilo - I'm not surprised if it was made of sushi Grin

I would try to take it back honestly. Some fibers and chemicals just react badly to some people. Yes, even though it's polyester, that should be the reason it stinks after only wearing it once. That seems egregious.

JaneEyre70 · 09/11/2017 09:14

I had the same OP on an expensive walking coat I bought. It was some super man made fibre that was supposed to be breathable and shower proof but my body didn't like it at all and it was like sitting in a sauna whenever I wore it. I was gutted as it was a lovely coat but I had to charity shop it in the end. Never had that issue with any other item of clothing in my life.

Only1scoop · 09/11/2017 09:15

Surely the clothes he's wearing under the coat stink too??

Mitchum?

I'd be too embarrassed to return for this reason and having washed it numerous times.

Fruitcorner123 · 09/11/2017 09:18

I agree with an earlier poster who says maybe he's too warm? Can he wear a thinner jacket until the weather turns more wintry? If i was sweating in a coat i would conclude I was too warm and remove it! Can he wash his own coat?

DenPerry · 09/11/2017 09:32

I have a coat that does this and I’m a very clean person, never smell normally! Surprisingly it’s not thick material, it’s this meshy stuff. I would try and return it, no harm in trying..

Your DH paid that much for polyester? Shock

When my shoes stink I put them in a plastic bag in the freezer to kill off bacteria. Just washing doesn't help. Not sure if it would work with a coat but you can try. And your DH is sweating too much for such a warm coat, maybe wait for colder weather if the shop doesn't take it back?

WanderingTrolley1 · 09/11/2017 10:32

£375 for a polyester coat? They saw him coming.

Swizzlesticks23 · 09/11/2017 10:35

Maybe he should try botox in his arm pits

Have a look online.

It's very effective.

E mail and ask. Also can recommend Sure antibacterial spray. DS has no BO whilst using this. Bacteria causes the odour
