This is not about transmen having babies, but the idea that transwomen will soon be able to have functioning womb transplants. Surely this is impossible for a number of reasons? AIBU to think that any available money should be put into research to help women who have fertility issues not into helping transwomen get pregnant and produce babies? Womb transplants, when possible should be used to help infertile women, not transwomen?

They are going to need a very big operation to get a womb in the first place, IVF, hormones and anti rejection drugs to support any pg and a c section to deliver the baby. I can't see many men transwomen queueing up for that, so I think it will be quite far off.
If I died and was donating organs I would not allow my womb to be harvested for this and I think many women would be similar. Where are they going to get the eggs from? I thought surrogacy had been clamped down on in India to protect poor women - cannot see any govt sanctioning this.

I am sure that I read somewhere that the donor has actually to be alive so either braindead or a live donor who has agreed to donate the womb. So that is really ripe for exploitation so far as I can see.

Even if they buy a womb, where will they get eggs from? Will they be using 'donor' eggs with their own frozen sperm? How do they think they're going to create an adequate blood supply and where will the hormones come from?
They;re living in a fantasy and they;re dragging children into it.

Who the fuck thinks this is the best start in life for a child? People who actually care about kids do something for children like support charities that help them. These men are only thinking of their own desires.

Presumably it’s not just trans women or biological women who can have the transplant. I’m sure there are men in same sex relationships who would like the ability to do this too. If having a uterus is not related to womanhood, I’m guessing womanhood is not a prerequsite to having a uterus.

YANBU - I completely agree it should be spent on infertility treatments. I personally think its disgusting that hormone meds for TG people costing hundreds and hundreds per month are available on the NHS but yet they're cancelling funded IVF treatments. Should absolutely be the other way around IMO.

I think it's disgusting people quote things like this on the internet when they don't have a clue about it.

YANBU to think it's far-fetched, but YABU to say that money should be spent on something "better" instead. With that attitude there would never be any scientific progress. As a species humans have survived and advanced because they are willing to tackle things that seem impossible or unnecessary.

If we accept the argument that research shouldn't be undertaken into allowing trans people to have children because the money should be spent on IVF, then common sense means we also accept that IVF shouldn't be carried out because the money could be spent on helping poor and vulnerable children that are already alive.

I doubt that transwomen will be queuing up for a womb transplant - given the fact it's a major operation, requires major surgery and a lifetime of immunosupressant drugs to prevent rejection. Plus all the other issues of hormones etc during pregnancy.

It seems like a story designed to promote vitriol at transwomen.

IVF is about using science and medicine to help people do what their bodies are designed to do. Same with organ transplants etc. Womb transplants into biological males is not.

Just because we can doesn't mean that we should.

Yy to screepys comment. As I’m anonymous I will admit as a student midwife I would feel extremely uncomfortable catching the baby of a genetically xy human and assisting them in their postnatal care

Surely the ethical implications of this are too great to contemplate. Imagine the risk to the life of the baby throughout the period of gestation in a experimental womb.

Hmmm, given that most trans women don’t get “bottom surgery” I can’t imagine they will be queuing up for this major surgery.

I don’t see many trans women doing the reality of being female, its all the sexy show they screen in their own minds.

It’ll be interesting to see how the intersectional feminists rationalise procuring body parts from probably non white and poor women, to meet the wish fulfilment of white (previously) men.

But a bunch of kids will read about this and think it is a real option.

Anyone who questions it will be called bigot.

Their doctor/councillor won’t be allowed to question their rationality.

Their schools will support them while they take Lupron and then later are spayed/neutered.

The kids underlying issues won’t be addressed, there won’t be any support available in case they want to halt the process or de transition.

Never going to happen. As soon as men realise what is involved in pregnancy and childbirth, they'll go back to surrogacy.
