Daily Telegraph "Sex change men 'will soon be able to have babies'

This is not about transmen having babies, but the idea that transwomen will soon be able to have functioning womb transplants. Surely this is impossible for a number of reasons? AIBU to think that any available money should be put into research to help women who have fertility issues not into helping transwomen get pregnant and produce babies? Womb transplants, when possible should be used to help infertile women, not transwomen?

We have a population problem...we certainly don't need to come up with artificial ways of increasing it.

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 04/11/2017 21:51

If transwomen are women is written into law - then is there any legal difference between an infertile woman who's lived as a woman all her life, and a transwomen?

Both will simply be women with fertility issues in the eyes of the law, no legal basis to prioritise one over the other - won't they?

Is that a correct interpretation of the new laws that Maria Miller is proposing - does anyone know?

sagamartha · 04/11/2017 21:54

As soon as men realise what is involved in pregnancy and childbirth, they'll go back to surrogacy

I am sure a lot of transwomen - who feel they are in the wrong body - would love to have been born in a body that could potentially give birth. The reality is that they are 'in the wrong body' and the body they are in can't give birth and that's something they have to handle.

Womb transplants into transwomen aren't going to happen in the forseeable future - there's only been 5 done in women. The complications to the recipient, the fact they have to take immunosupressant drugs, the issue with the hormones and the risk to the baby means that this is unlikely.

Still, it's generated some clickbait headlines in the Telegraph and the Mail and more anger and negativity about transwomen - so it's done its job.

GerdaLovesLili · 04/11/2017 21:56

If this ever did become more than a clumsily written bit of click-bait journalism then perhaps transmen who wanted to be rid of the burden of their wombs could be paired with somwone who could give it a good home.

MargeryFenworthy · 04/11/2017 21:57

Chilling. What kind of a future do we face? Men giving birth. Shocking.

formerbabe · 04/11/2017 22:01

I wonder if a womb was transplanted into a man and they were pregnant how labour would work? Am I correct in thinking that we don't actually know what happens to make labour start? Would labour occur naturally or would they have to have a c section? If they didn't have a c section, could they theoretically stay pregnant?! Hmmm

MrsDustyBusty · 04/11/2017 22:11

It's annoying to think that men with an implanted uterus would have c sections by default but women can't simply choose to have one if that's what they want.

CoteDAzur · 04/11/2017 22:15

Won't happen. Organ transplant is a last resort. It's done when all else fails, to prolong life for some years with constant use of immunosuppressants.

Nonibaloni · 04/11/2017 22:17

Is anyone asking why womb transplants are being researched for woman (as in females) who have a womb that won’t carry a child, or have had a hysterectomy for medical reasons? Or are trans woman more important because they used to be men.
We need to fucking stop putting men’s medical needs above women’s!

sagamartha · 04/11/2017 22:19

We need to fucking stop putting men’s medical needs above women’s

I think this research into womb transplants is being carried out for women who have fertility issues and it's not being carried out for transwomen.

ladyballs · 04/11/2017 22:20

Ugh.

Sagamartha, a self-identified transwoman on this site told me that my pain at infertility was less than theirs because at least I had a womb.

The fact that this person had previously fathered children was irrelevant, apparently.

The idea that men could give birth if only they had wombs is revolting. I'm glad it's unlikely to come to pass.

Sayyouwill · 04/11/2017 22:32

@ladyballs that’s absolutely disgusting. I’m no good at sympathy but Flowers

You don’t just need a uterus to have a baby, you also need a pelvis that is the shape to fit a growing baby, an endocrine system to support a pregnancy and an adequate blood supply to said uterus.
Unless they can also transplant those I truly hope men having babies will never happen.

KeepItAsItIs · 04/11/2017 23:10

YANBU.

Personally I think the money would better spent on counselling and helping people with gender dysphoria comes to terms with who they are and dealing with it rather than pandering to the nonsense that you can actually change sex. And as for a transwoman recieving a donor womb and givign birth, well, it's just ludicrous isn't it.

ZooeyAndFranny · 04/11/2017 23:14

This is ludicrous. A womb and a fertilized egg is not enough for a successful pregnancy.

Who writes this tripe?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 05/11/2017 11:25

I wonder if you'd be able to opt out of that as an organ donor? If not that's me off the donor register

In the UK you can. It is not relevant now given my age but I specifically said my eggs were not to be used as I absolutely did not want them, or any other part or tissue, to be used for any infertility treatment.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 05/11/2017 11:33

It won’t happen. At least I hope it doesn’t. Slowly taking away everything that makes a woman a woman.

TitaniasCloset · 05/11/2017 21:43

If they did manage to carry a baby wouldn’t the baby be deformed? Their bodies cannot do what a woman’s does. We don’t just carry around the baby in our uterus, it’s a very active two way street.

busyboysmum · 05/11/2017 21:46

I'd imagine there would have to be a lot of drugs taken so the body didn't reject the baby so not a great start for the poor wee mite.

noeffingidea · 05/11/2017 21:56

I don't think this is feasible. People just don't really understand what tranplant surgery entails.
As an example, the first ever succesful penis transplant - from man to man - was only carried out 3 years ago. The operation took 15 hours. There have only been 3 succesful attempts.
You can't just plonk a uterus inside a male body and expect the transplant to be succesful, let alone support a pregnancy.
It's a bit disappointing that the Telegraph is reporting on this. I thought they were better than that.

LineysRun · 05/11/2017 22:02

To run a successful endocrine system to support a pregnancy would require, well, being fucking female for one thing.

ZooeyAndFranny · 05/11/2017 22:03

How can a man’s body produce the hormones required to sustain a pregnancy?

noeffingidea · 05/11/2017 22:05

Quite, Liney'srun.
Not to mention, scientists still don't know everything about the whole process of pregnancy, so how would they be able to replicate it artificially?

Sangria · 06/11/2017 00:04

There's obviously lots of money in it for someone. Can't help feeling that, with too many people on the planet and also considering the parlous state of the NHS, the money would be better spent on dealing with cancer etc than with assisted reproduction. Forty years on, inherited infertility is becoming a problem and it's only going to get worse. One day, sex will be a recreational activity and babies will be ordered on the internet.
