To think this isn't normal?

7 week old dd has slept all night for the past week. She stays awake all day. She will not sleep on me or dh, won't go into her crib and cries if we put her down. The only time she will go to sleep is in the car and only when it is moving.
She in now lying on me watching corrie. I can't remember the last time I even had a cup of tea. It's impossible to get anything done and I'm knackered. She is also constantly hungry.
What am I doing wrong????

Yes that's right, she can sleep for nearly 8 hours through the night.
She is being breastfed but is always hungry throughout the day

You are not doing anything wrong she is a newborn and they honestly don't come with a manual. Does she have a pram you could shush her in that ? I know she is always on you feeding but could you try and wake her tonfeed her at night

It sounds normal to be honest. Hard but normal. Invest in a really good baby carrier and a travel mug to keep your tea warm. It will pass.

Santa 8 hours of sleep in 24 is massively under what it should be for a newborn. Id be concerned too.

That really isn't much sleep. At a guess is say she could be hungry. Is she gaining weight steadily?

Tbf the OP thought the baby would nap during the day and be up during the night so is a bit confused. Yes baby carrier, travel mug

She is unlilely constantly hungry it’s that she is cluster feeding, it’s brutal around the 6 week mark as there’s a huge growth spurt and baby is ‘getting her order in’. Don’t worry about it contact a breastfeeding group/helpline if you’re unsure x

She needs anout 16 hours of sleep a day, minimum. Something is not right. If I were you I would get advice from your GP and/or HV

Maybe have her checked for tongue tie?

I had to cave and give bf babies a dummy as I couldn't cope with being a human dummy.

If shes sleeping 8 hours then feeding very 2 when awake would be normal.

Kellymom is great for bf tips. Made me realised I want leaving mine on breast long enough to get hind milk and that my letdown was very fast

Please look into cluster feeding and have a look at the wonder weeks app on iPhone/Android. Saved my sanity. There’s so much going on - as a side not it’s very unusual but my niece and nephew slept through from 7 weeks but stopped napping totally. No one could do anything about it, whatever they tried, and they are now 13 and absolutely fine!

First baby so hate putting her down it breaks my heart to hear her screaming and I don't mind the eight hours at night
It's just the constant waking in the day where I can't even sit down on my own for two seconds.
We had a doctors appointment yesterday and she definetly doesn't have tongue tie. She wants feeding at least every hour for about ten mins at a time and has been gaining weight normally

DS was sleeping through at 13 weeks and only had 3 half hour naps a day, to the minute! You could time him. He didn't start napping properly through the day until he was about 11 months and crawling, then he would have a good 2 hours. Not all babies are the same and I wouldn't assume that a baby that wasn't sleeping for 16 hours a day had anything wrong with it.

Can you lie her beside you on the sofa let her kick her legs about but she is still beside you ? My babies are women now so it is all different but do babies still get swaddled?

That's exhausting, I remember DC1 going through a phase of not sleeping in the day.

It's important to remember that sometimes babies cry because they are tired, and while we never did 'leaving to cry' I realised later than I could have done that she sometimes needed a little longer to settle without me feeling that I had to get her up again.

Will your baby sleep in the pram? When we went through the non-napping spell, she would sleep in the pram so we went for walks, and I'd leave her sleeping (unwrapped!) in the pram in the hall when we came in.

Normal for my baby I'm afraid. She slept through from 2 weeks old. Breastfed but was gaining weight well. (She's huge) so mw wasn't concerned. She doesn't nap much in the day.

My DD only cat naps in the day and doesn't sleep through at night. She is a very alert baby. Maybe yours is too unless she is overstimulated during the day and simply can't sleep?

BF is brutal in the early weeks. My DD is still a frequent feeder at 13 weeks, but oh my...the first few weeks were tough.

Ds1 refused to nap for about a month at 6mo and woke hourly at night. Turned out he had immature digestive system and was intolerant to lots of different types of food like peas, strawberry, broccoli, cucumber. He was a very colicky baby which was a reaction from these food in my breastmilk. He would wake with a bloated belly/ indigestion and painful wind. Ds2 was the same but we managed him with a dummy (which he naturally rejected at 10mo) a feeding schedule of 3hrs (give or take) and cutting out trigger foods. He slept for 3hrs in the night then short feed too which was bliss after ds1. I also had a very strong let down so would unlatch and direct into a muslin then reattach. Ds2 soon got used to this. He was happy enough napping in boucer or crib with dummy and left to grumble for a bit while sorting ds1. Also lived in the sling when out and about.
