To think losing break was harsh?

DS was late this morning because he found an injured bird. He took it to the school office, who called the RSPB who probably made pigeon pie but for being late, he lost his break and will not be allowed to go on a school trip if it happens again.

Bit harsh since he was only trying to be nice, surely?

That's bloody awful!! He should have had an award not a punishment!!

How old is he and how late was he?

10, nearly 11. He was twenty minutes late, I think.

Personally I think that is harsh. We have been in a similar situation where kids have been late because they showed compassion towards an animal - as their pastoral teacher I was called to pop down to see them and ensure their parents were told of their kindness.

I mean, if they were finding ‘injured birds’ Daily I might start to wonder though.

The first late was reasonable to be punished for, although it was my fault.

The rules are the rules. It was a bit harsh but he disrupted the class. You take away the teachers time cool, the teacher can take away your kids time aswell he needs to learn . Sounds like a good school to me, it’s called respecting authority.

Does seem harsh it’s not like he just hadn’t bothered getting out of his bed on Time, he saw an injured bird and thought he was being kind.

How can anyone punish a child for doing what they think is kind?

Assuming this is primary school he should not be punished for being late at all.

Parents are still responsible for getting their DC to school on time at that age. You've already said it was your fault he was late last time. That shows why punishing the DC is nonsense.

I would complain to the school about this.

I think it is harsh, I hope you've told him he did the right thing. He needs congratulating not punishing.

As an aside, why on earth are Primary school kids being punished for being late, when it's the parent's responsibility to see they leave/get to school on time?

I found money on the way to school once I took it to the headmaster who didn't laugh (It was a fiver ) he took me to the police who looked at me like they kept it for 12 months and then gave it to me it was a lesson in honesty and doing the right thing my head teacher told me how proud he was of me how honest I was and I did not get into trouble at all

Years 5 and 6 generally get themselves to school, but I had said I'd drop him that morning and forgot.

Surely the school will understand if you just call up and explain! I had an issue with one of mine for being late in her first year of high school because of the bus, I was on the phone constantly to the school to make sure she didn't get told off for it!
