Fucking fireworks! There's really no need is there?

So this weekend, there were loads going off, sounded like a organised event. Dh was a bit pissed off, but I thought-Halloween party. Tonight-Sunday, there's been two similar, long drawn out events since it went dark.
My cat isn't bothered, but I know lots of animals and small kids will be upset by the loud noise (I've had to turn the TV up) We live in a market town with lots of stone houses, narrow yards and the sound just bounces from wall to wall.
So is it me being a miserable sod, or should they be controlled better than those?

Personally, up to about 7-8 pm I think you're being a miserable sod.
After that, it shouldn't happen except at organised events.
During reasonable hours I've no promlem with it. People do all sorts of other things that I consider to be anti-social - smoke, drive hideously loud motorbikes etc.... BUT thats sort of my problem in the end.

You're not being unreasonable, there's no need for people to be using them outside of official displays. Most of the home use ones are crap anyway.

You can bet they'll still be letting them off next weekend too. All rather chavtastic.

I love fireworks but think they should only be allowed to be sold to someone with a licence so only at organised events.

Never said I didn't like them, I love a display and sparklers (even a soft spot for shite English home ones) But these have been going on ages. I used to like them when they were for special occasions, not for every chuffing thing.

I love firework season it add a bit of colour and fun to a gloomy dark part of the year. Then we move onto Christmas lights then back to gloomy and dark till spring

We live in a touristy area and there are several displays throughout the summer and there are several organised displays next weekend so it’s not like they’re hard to come by

My dog is shit scared of them too so we have to try and make sure someone is home with him. Our neighbours behind us have just let off a load while the poor thing was trying to have a piss.

Fucking hate them! Started going off at bastard 11am this morning. Demented dog and 1 yr old not happy at all! Don't mind proper controlled events but random ones going off near the house is just shitty!

YANBU, I love fireworks if they are at an organised display but I don't understand why they are allowed to be brought and used by anyone.
We have outside pets (chickens/rabbits/birds), this time last yr we lost a few because of the sheer fright they get when the fireworks go off.
I wake up every morning dreading going to let them out in case we lose any more.

We live in Edinburgh. We have them every night in August and two be on Saturdays. Don’t bother me unless it’s actually teens chucking them about.

Since Diwali we have had fireworks from 6ish to anything up to 1am but never shopping before 11pm. EVERY NIGHT!!

I don't think you're being unreasonable, but then I've got horses, and have had to pursue someone else's horse through a couple of fences due to kids setting fireworks off about 2 weeks before the day and terrifying the poor thing. One of my dogs is also scared after an incident a week or so before bonfire night. If you have animals, children or disoriented or unwell people in your care you can plan ahead for bonfire night, or new years Eve etc, but when it's a month of random bangs from dusk (and sometimes before) until the early hours, it's impossible to predict. Tighter controls would be nice, so they aren't let off any time by anyone, but I'm not holding my breath. I don't want to dampen anyone's fun at all, so I don't think I'm miserable, just practical.

YANBU. Waste of time, waste of money, cause much more distress than joy. Ban the fuckers.

I think a compromise could be made- allow fireworks but restrict really loud ones to licence/organised events.

That way everyone can enjoy them without waking everything within a 5 mile radius!

We've had fireworks here for well over a week already. Every night, usually starting at about 6pm (before it's even properly dark). The last ones I heard last night were gone 11pm.

The stupid cat isn't at all bothered by them if she's inside, but if she's out she'll find somewhere to hide and won't come home for hours, so we either have to get her in before they start and keep her in, or accept that she's going to stay out all night (she's usually in at night). I wouldn't care if this was just on bonfire night or the week with it in including the two weekends either side, but it seems to be the whole of October and November.

There is always a long of hand wringing on here about fireworks but I've never understood it and like hearing them and watching them. I can see the while skyline over my town from my bedroom and get to enjoy all the local fireworks for free.

Fireworks in the middle of the night is a dickish way to behave but anything else is fair game.

This^^. Home firework displays are always shit imo. Everyone standing round in the cold while someone lights the thing, runs for cover, it goes off, everyone says "ooo" and are engulfed in smoke for the 'joy' of seeing a brief, shiny light in the sky. And repeat. Don't get it at all.

A proper display can be really cool, if it's a good one.

Also, some people who use them don't consider anyone else when they use them and can be quite irresponsible, entitled and selfish about it.

They were illegal for home use where I grew up, plus we don't celebrate bonfire night there, (so one less occasion to use them I suppose). I only ever experienced this tradition of setting off shit fireworks in the back garden all evening even in teeny weeny, postage stamp sized gardens like where I live when I moved to SE England.

Agree, I work in a vets and the effects on animals are horrific, their hearing is far superior to ours so you can only imagine just how loud they are to animals. We have to order shed loads of valium every October. In built up areas the noise bounces off buildings, it sounds like a bloody war zone. At least if they were restricted to organised events people could plan ahead.

I would love to see a move to silent fireworks as I do think they're pretty to look at.
