“Wait, what?”

AIBU or is this the most overused phrase in tv and film at the moment?

I can’t watch a single tv show (mainly American) without this phrase being uttered at least twice per episode. It’s starting to drive me batty. It’s utterly lazy writing.

Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?! And yes, I’m aware that this is a very petty AIBU. But I’m currently on sick leave, watching a lot of Netflix and if I hear this accursed phrase one more time I will kick the tv.

Halsall - I believe, but am not sure, that using "So..." at the start of a sentence became acceptable in scientific writings, and has leached out into the wider world as a result.

One of my DCs says"wait" I'm the same way that others say "like". Is this a New Thing?

What's it all about?

"So I turned round to her..then she turned round to me...so then I turned round to her and said".... by which time I've lost thread of story and my head's spinning as much as theirs must have been

"So I went to the shop...yeeeeah...& I saw this (whatever), yeeeeah.... and I was like..."

I really don't understand the need for extra/irrelevant words
