AIBU or is this the most overused phrase in tv and film at the moment?

I can’t watch a single tv show (mainly American) without this phrase being uttered at least twice per episode. It’s starting to drive me batty. It’s utterly lazy writing.

Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?! And yes, I’m aware that this is a very petty AIBU. But I’m currently on sick leave, watching a lot of Netflix and if I hear this accursed phrase one more time I will kick the tv.

Why is every flipping celebrity interview described as "X opens up about (whatever)"?

No.
No, X doesn't.
X talks about is craftily steered towards revealing (whatever).

Which is the entire point of interviewing them in the first place.

Grr.

(BTW, not sure why Americans are being blamed for starting so many of these: some specific expressions, yes, but we in the UK are equally responsible for irritating-as-Hell phrases! "Gobsmacked" to name but one).

I really am unattractively grumpy. Will go and have a stern word with myself. Sad

Child used it at school the other day, totally spontaneous, I found it quite sweet.

EllaHen · 26/10/2017 20:04

My almost 12 year old dd starts many a sentence with "No offence but ...."

She is aware of my feelings on the matter but seems to be addicted to saying it.

RebelFreddyVSRogueJason · 26/10/2017 20:06

I use so many of these . GrinGrin

MrsHathaway · 26/10/2017 20:07

I hate 'it is what it is'. Makes me grit my teeth whenever I hear it!

I used to roll my eyes. Then there was a meme sorry about how it translates to "eso si que es" in Spanish (which I read but don't speak). So far so dull except that's pronounced the same as S-O-C-K-S.

BaDumShh · 26/10/2017 20:14

Why is every flipping celebrity interview described as "X opens up about (whatever)"?

“Flaunts” and “shows off” is another one...celebs don’t just wear skirts, they “show off their legs.” They don’t wear bikinis because, you know, they’re on the beach and it’s hot. They “flaunt their curves”.

“Crisis talks” is my personal favourite. They don’t have rows, they have crisis talks! I’ve never had a crisis talk in my life 😂

When did recording artists/film directors begin 'dropping' new music or movies? It's all over the shop these days.

And in speech, 'I'm not gonna lie...'

Had an email today, 'I'm sending this email to yourself to confirm that we have received payment from yourself. If I can be of any further assistance to yourself please let me know.'

I replied, 'Thank yourself'.

Celebrities are always "so excited" about their new film/sponsorship deal/stint on This Morning. I have a feeling that they are not awfully excited at all.

And every lazy "So what do we know?" dialogue as a means to get the audience up to speed on the plot. So you get a detective asking another detective "What do we know?" and the other detective says that they want to question Jason Fletcher, a known drug dealer, who is known to visit his mum in a nursing home. These are facts that the other detective actually knows because they've been on the case for 3 years.

The next shot is always a stake-out at the aforementioned nursing home.

FawnDrench · 26/10/2017 20:36

What about the creeping-into-everyday-usage “hey” instead of “hello”or even “hi”?

I noticed this being used several times in recent tv series, namely “Liar, and Doctor Foster”

Can’t stand it.

Popchyk · 26/10/2017 20:39

Any drama featuring people in the south of England have them saying shut up a lot in order to convey their feelings of disbelief.

"Our Frankie's only gone and got himself arrested again. Armed robbery".
"Shut up".

"Been charged with carrying an offensive weapon an' all".
"Shut up".

BeALert · 26/10/2017 21:24

PavlovianLunge · 26/10/2017 21:29

I know, right?

SarahHagan · 26/10/2017 21:34

I wondered where this had come from, I don't watch much TV. It is irritating, when I see it on Twitter for example.

Madreputa · 26/10/2017 22:01

I get really confused when I bump into someone and instead of saying hello they say are you alright ? So what am I supposed to answer? Do I just say hi or do I answer their question and say thanks I am fine ?

Pollypudding · 26/10/2017 22:11

My pet hate is “very unique”. Unique is an absolute and you cannot use a qualifier. You are unique or not fgs.

Notinmybackyard · 26/10/2017 22:17

I hate it when people start a comment with "now here's the thing" 😐

SpinnerDryer · 26/10/2017 22:21

Wait, What YABU

Obvs

charmedrose · 26/10/2017 22:25

Another one i've thought of, when someone is asked a question they'll answer "i mean" at the beginning of the sentence. Angry

TitaniasCloset · 26/10/2017 22:59

On beauty videos on YouTube they always say 'go in'.

As in, 'I'm going to go in with this hugely expensive brush' and 'go in with this high light' etc

Does my head in.

MorrisZapp · 26/10/2017 23:04

Americans don't like makeup any more.

They 'enjoy' it.

StealthPolarBear · 26/10/2017 23:10

I had a very odd conversation recently with a woman in a shop who appeared to be unable to finish a sentence and relied on the customer filling in the blank
"so do you want your receipt, orrrrrrr...."

"Yes please"

There were a couple of others like this, seemed to be the way she spoke

supersop60 · 26/10/2017 23:13

I'm a bit bored with "Really???" and "wow" (said in an indignant tone)

furcoatandnoknickers · 27/10/2017 00:06

"off of" as in ..we can't get any prints off of the weapon...its just OFF the weapon ffs...

NoodleNinja · 27/10/2017 00:33

The newest meme craze which uses 'first of all...' is really getting on my last nerve. It's fucking annoying.

Who makes these things up??

Crispbutty · 27/10/2017 00:40

The most recent media ones that irritate me are variations of "giving shade" and "clapping back" both make me want to stop reading whatever article it is.
