Sneering on Mumsnet - why so much?

Its not funny or clever and just comes across as nasty and ignorant. But there is alot of it on MN (especially AIBU), often with a deeply self-satisfied and self-congratulatory tone! You don't find it on other forums, not even the Daily Mail (so despised by MN, ironically, or is that just sneering again!).

Is it a very British thing I wonder? Or just dull, goady people in general?

This obviously does not apply to the amusing, droll, arch, self-deprecating, wry or witty humour that does occasionally find its way on to MN. Though should add I don't visit AIBU much these days as the good stuff is rare and you have to plough through so much junk.

It could be something to do with the ease of name changing.

You know so people can start threads like this one for example, have a dig and then slip back into their regular posting names.

I agree Worra - so easy to change names on here which means people don't have to stand by their posts.

Mumsnet is not only a British thing. Posters from elsewhere in the world contribute too. And I find that mainly posters respond to the Goady Fuckers, not the other way around.

Brand new friends walking into an established club of nearly 1 Million people telling them how it should be done- why so much?

Sneering is a very Mumsnet word. And "pouring vitriol" and "goady" they all tend to mean "you disagree with me and I don't like being disagreed with"

I do use the word sneering in RL. I do not use "pouring vitriol". I don't use "goady", but I have used goading. It's a thing children do if they want to provoke another child to explode.

If it looks like a goady twat, walks like a goady twat and talks like one, I'll sneer.

If it's a goady fucking lying troll, I'll sneer and then I'll snarl as well.

The thing is, you click onto a thread and suddenly you've invited something really, really irritating into your life.

One person's 'slightly snippy', 'get a grip' response can be another person's 'sneering'.

It seems you are sneering at the sneering. Your post comes acrosss as very competmptious indeed. Why are you allowed to do it but others not?

Oh, and the DM responses ... they are angry and hate-filled. The fact you don't notice that suggests that you have your filters set not to notice attacks on women, poor people, or immigrants.

Not so much sneery, but there's a whole load more miserable bastards around who pour cold water on any vaguely amusing thread, daily mail journos looking for an easy ride, or jokers starting up red button subject threads to set the cat among the pigeons and zap anyone who dials agrees with them (playing up the poor wee me, innocent hurty feeling).

Now that I am getting used to this place, I quite like it apart from the shitty trolly threads. Learning to avoid them in the main.
I've seen some great support on here for people. Quite heartening in fact.
It is refreshing not to see stuff deleted for "flaming" all the time.

New posters starting MN thread "why is MN so " presumably think one million previous users do a face palm "but of course, thank you for pointing it out, we must do it this way". Start your own club or at least take part and contribute before explaining how it should be.
