To be surprised MN is moderated by volunteers at night?

I am surprised that MN is largely moderated by volunteers at night. MN is a business, should it really be using volunteers?

And that, even though a troll hunting TAAT is usually deleted (and could be a banning offence) at some times of day, it's the required overnight action.

ConcernedNeighbour17 · 01/10/2017 20:14

Really? That's shit. Why can't the pay someone to do it properly. I've seen posts about people being suicidal or having quite severe mental health issues. It does seem that there should be some 'proper' moderation of such a massive site.

Is there a reason given for using volunteers?

MyBrilliantDisguise · 01/10/2017 20:16

We don't pay for this site. Volunteers aren't exactly sent down the mines, are they? I've often thought I wouldn't mind doing it for a couple of hours.

Sparklingbrook · 01/10/2017 20:21

The Nightwatch has been going for ages.

It is a bit weird posting on the NightWatch thread for all to see. It's like trollhunting that's allowed.

brasty · 01/10/2017 20:27

I didn't know about this until today, and I am obviously not the only one. This is a business, and we do pay for it by putting up with adverts and having our info sold to make money. I wouldn't volunteer for google either. People should be paid.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 01/10/2017 20:28

The volunteers seem ok with it.

Owners, Getting rich off the back of others.
But some people do like a little bit of power.

MN have commented on the above thread.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 01/10/2017 20:38

Being an unpaid mod appeals to a certain kind of person (who doesn't see the inequity of the paid staff being comfily tucked up in bed while they volunteer their services).

Userlavender · 01/10/2017 20:39

Surely it's just students and graduates doing it who can use it as an "internship" read: unpaid work. Eye roll. Bullshit.

Sparklingbrook · 01/10/2017 20:40

I always assumed the Nightwatch were mainly people who weren't UK based and therefore were available at different hours through the night.
I remember the thread where volunteers were requested a few years ago and I think they got more volunteers than were required.

brasty · 01/10/2017 20:51

Okay, although I think the volunteers are naive

Cheby · 01/10/2017 21:16

The Nightwatch is relatively recent; prior to them there was no moderation at night. I think at the time they asked for overseas volunteers who might be up during the night anyway. No one is forced to do it, I can't see the issue with it. Better than letting troll threads run all night and people be drawn in.

Sparklingbrook · 01/10/2017 21:20

YY I don't think any arm twisting was involved.

Butterymuffin · 01/10/2017 21:20

Was just coming over to link the thread I started about this in Site Stuff, though I see sparklingbrook has done so, thanks. But one more time - would welcome anyone else's thoughts on this over there, as MNHQ have said they respond in Site Stuff to issues like this:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/3047417-Overnight-moderation-on-voluntary-basis

It's simple for me: I think people doing work for profit-making businesses should be paid.

brasty · 01/10/2017 21:20

I am shocked that there used to be no moderation at night.

Why do some get paid for moderating and others volunteer ??? Surely every moderator should get paid for their time and service ?

brasty · 01/10/2017 21:22

Yes this is not an amateur enterprise.

OP posts:
brasty · 01/10/2017 21:25

ButteryMuffin I hadn't realised you had started a very recent thread over there. Have commented on it.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 01/10/2017 21:26

Looks like I didn't get it to start with. Grin

tippz · 01/10/2017 21:32

Nobody is forced to do anything. People are doing it willingly and happily. If someone is willingly a volunteer, they don't have to be paid. That's what a volunteer is FGS. I have been a moderator on several forums before, and I didn't get paid for it, nor did I expect to.

People are just trying to create an issue that isn't there.

Do they have nothing better to do? Hmm

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 01/10/2017 21:32

I think the NW just hide things for the morning moderators to check and deal with. So they don't have the same service.

brasty · 01/10/2017 21:34

I have moderated for a charity. It is not the task that is the issue. This is a business. That is the difference

AnneEyhtMeyer · 01/10/2017 21:35

We don't pay for the site by handing over money because we are sold by the site for advertising. We are the product, not the customer, which people seem not to realise.

I think it is outrageous that a company does not pay its workers. There is no excuse for it. Just because people volunteer for it does not mean they are not being exploited.
