To be surprised MN is moderated by volunteers at night?

I am surprised that MN is largely moderated by volunteers at night. MN is a business, should it really be using volunteers?

"Again, if the overnight mods are quite happy not to commit to paid hours and like being on a forum but also enjoy a role then so what? "

That's what the Tories say about zero hour contracts, people obviously, some people want them, so let ethics go out the window.

"We could take another look at the data but broadly, if we had an 'official' mod overnight, we'd be shifting resource across from the busier fully staffed day and evening shifts, "

Or you recognise that overnight Moderators are needed because of the increase in Trolling and there has been more responsibility placed on Forums/SM for their content, so you increase your resources to be able to employ Overnight Moderators. Seeming as you are a business that makes enough to have fair employment polices and the 'resources' for Staff is set by the owners etc and can be made higher and lowed at will.

So MN if we put it to you, do you think that you are now allowing enough resources for Staffing, given that the site has grown so much and there are bloody adverts everywhere.

Percentage wise, has it honestly been increased enough?

Is it in the Spirit of the site?

Do you really need to not pay people to stay in business?

It isn't just mn. Google 'are mods paid' and I think you'll find no, they aren't,. Admin during the day yes they have exact roles and responsibilities. Those online already who are willing to just hide posts, no they don't.

Its isn't an evil mn/'the tories' are out to repress us thing.

We could take another look at the data but broadly, if we had an 'official' mod overnight, we'd be shifting resource across from the busier fully staffed day and evening shifts, which seems a bit counterintuitive

Or this hugely profitable business could dab its hand in its pocket and pay people to do a job that needs doing.

IfNot · 03/10/2017 16:57

That's quite shocking. Yeah, lots of little special interest forums are moderated by members.
Mumsnet is a MASSIVE site, generating millions of pounds in profit, using US as content (quite right whoever said we are the product).
I can see the point of view of the night watchers, that they don't see it as really working, but the thing is during the day it IS someone's paid job.
Fucksake MNHQ, use a few quid of your gigantic advertising revenue and pay your night mods.

@BoysofMelody and others

Very well said.

You're missing the obvious point though. MN is a business. Pretending otherwise is a clever ruse to make more money.

Authenticity is a commodity which advertisers value.
