I need a better potato peeler

I find them so hard to use. This one peels carrots OK but is narrow so leaves a gauge when doing a big potato. AIBU to ask for recommendations for the ultimate veg peeler or is this as good as it gets?

Ceramic all the way, would never ever go back

Longdistance · 27/09/2017 21:56

I just use a Y shaped one with a rubber handle from Ikea. Never cut my fingers with it, and the blades really good.

OnTheRise · 27/09/2017 22:01

Ikea ones are good and lovely and sharp for the first few weeks then they go blunt and useless.

Oxo Good Grips, or whatever they're called. We've got two of them. Both are several years old and yes, both will still peel butternut squashes when required. Love them.

Costacoffeeplease · 27/09/2017 22:09

Kitchenaid - about £10 on amazon, seriously the best peeler ever

BabsGanoush · 27/09/2017 23:02

Mine is a little plastic Lancashire Peeler - fab for everything - peeling & fixing screws instead of getting a screwdriver

littlemissneela · 27/09/2017 23:07

My fave so far was one given to me by my dh gran. She got it in Germany donkeys years ago. Sadly, I think it ended up in the bin along with the peelings.

The other really good one, as has been mentioned once or twice os the OXO goodgrips one. Pricey but worth it. I love their can opener as well. Even dd who has chronic pain in her hands can use them both.

GoldenMalicious · 27/09/2017 23:10

I've got the Oxo good grips Y shaped one - I can't stand it! Well, it's great for carrots but not much else. Looks like I've had the wrong one all these years! I'll be on the look out for the potato one linked above...

littlemissneela · 27/09/2017 23:11

This is the German one www.amazon.co.uk/Westmark-Swivel-Vegetable-Potato-Peeler/dp/B000WVXKYU?tag=mumsnetforum-21

Fluffyears · 27/09/2017 23:36

Butternut Squash Hack put it in microwave in high for three minutes before cutting. It makes it much easier. Also it doesn’t need peeled if you are putting it in soup and blending, skin means extra fibre.

Whitecurrants · 28/09/2017 00:34

Good Grips again, the swivel one not the Y-shaped. I’ve been known to send them to friends with a thank-you note after they’ve had me to stay and made me use their crappy old peeler when I offered to help in the kitchen

Longdistance · 28/09/2017 01:00

on the rise I've had my Ikea one years, and it's still good as new.

I did have a Zyliss one before, which was mega sharp, but broke after not even a year Hmm

blankface · 28/09/2017 01:20

Titan peeler, available from amazon and elsewhere. Had mine a good 10 years and still sharp, such a great push/pull action too for shredding or peeling things like butternut squash and swede.

I won't link to amazon because I'll get pestered with adverts and emails, the ad is a bit corny but it does do what it says on the tin video.

ToastyFingers · 28/09/2017 06:15

Wrt to swede peeling, I have bizzarly long fingers and buy fairly small swedes, as only two of us like them.

speakout · 28/09/2017 06:27

I only use them for carrots.

I prefer to peel potatoes with a knife- much faster.

laundryelf · 28/09/2017 06:55

Titan turbo vegetable peeler, so easy to use and fantastic for butternut squash. Search titan peeler on Amazon.

EBearhug · 28/09/2017 07:47

I was on holiday recently, in a self-catered place, and it was a bit of a revelation how much easier a sharp peeler makes it. I might splash out on a new one, as it's payday tomorrow...

thegreylady · 28/09/2017 07:52

My dd described the Lakeland one as 'life changing'!

thegreylady · 28/09/2017 07:54

It is the swivel one with a black handle, indispensable.

00100001 · 28/09/2017 07:55

My peeler sits at the back of the utensil drawer.

Life is to short to peel veg.

Seriously, I rarely bother

Potatoes get peeled for when we have guests Grin

00100001 · 28/09/2017 07:56

Sharp peelers are fantastic

I'd also recommend a good grater. It make a HUGE difference. I have an oxo good grips grater. It's marvellous. My friend was mightily impressed

Flev · 28/09/2017 07:57

Another vote here for Lakeland's own. Although we also have another swivel-style one in the house, as DH can't get on with Y-shaped peelers and if would be a real shame if he never peeled any veg!

Oblomov17 · 28/09/2017 08:01

Noting.

BigFatGoalie · 28/09/2017 08:09

No no no!
The Lakeland one (white and green) will CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
I am not exaggerating obviously it is next to godliness.
Just buy it. It will make you a much happier and lovelier person.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 28/09/2017 10:04

blankface I watched the video Blush and now I want one! Do you have the julienne one too? Is it good? Only the other day I was whinging about cutting carrot for a stir fry and that looks like it could solve the problem.

pestov · 21/10/2017 17:35

Update: I bought a set of OXO good grips. My God they’re amazing! Thanks for all the suggestions
