Smoking breaks @ work

Hello there

Was going to ask if there are any smokers who can't go for a cigarette while at work, except their lunch break.

Just curious. Thanks

We get half an hour lunch and two fifteen minute breaks per day where I work.

I'm currently on my first fag break of the day. (Later shift, working until 8pm.)

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 15/09/2017 16:22

I'm well aware it pisses non-smokers off us smokers seeming to have more breaks than them)...

They aren't seeming to have more breaks, they actually are having more breaks.

I think if you are noticing people having more breaks then you, taking more breaks yourself will lead to a mental healthier workplace.

The majority of people don't have the option to just take more breaks, or even have breaks when they want them.

SonicBoomBoom · 15/09/2017 16:23

Smokers should only be allowed the same number of breaks (ie, lunch), or its not fair.

I worked with a team where 3 of them smoked at least two or three times a day, on top of lunch. While they each waited for the other two to finish what they were doing, so they could all go together, the whole rigmarole took 30 minutes. Every time.

Fucked me right off.

Foreverhopeful22 · 15/09/2017 16:24

We had 15 mins morning and afternoon

45 mins lunch - smokers smoked and drank coffee

Non smokers had coffee and natter

this clearly isn't true if the smokers can spend most of the day outside 😂

No need to exaggerate; nobody's claiming they spend most of the day outside.

Bonez · 15/09/2017 16:38

My partner used to have several breaks (probably 4 in total at 5/10 minutes each I'd guess) but he'd also usually always skip lunch while doing this. Since the ban was implemented he makes sure he leaves the office and stays out for his entire lunch Grin

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 15/09/2017 16:41

Good for him; he certainly should. Everyone needs a proper break from work during the day.

It's much better for him to have a proper lunch break than to have several small smoke breaks. His bosses did well implementing the ban.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 15/09/2017 16:51

At my work, we have an hour for lunch. Smokers can choose to have a 40 or 50 minute lunch break and have 1/2 cig breaks. Seems to work well.

Bonez · 15/09/2017 17:46

WhatToDo yep! Funny thing is he's one of the bosses! There's 4 directors and a CEO who had to vote on it and they all agreed. He wasn't actually bothered by the ban either as it gets him out and actually makes him eat something Smile

Lavenderfly · 15/09/2017 19:03

I don't take a lunch break, only to pop to onsite cafe to bring a sandwich back to my desk. I have two cig breaks, sometimes three. If I go with a co-worker we just talk about work. Some of our best solutions have been thought up during a 7 min fag break. If I quit I wonder if those opportunities would still happen.

I'm meant to have an hour break.

Theyhaveallbeenused2 · 15/09/2017 19:07

I only get to smoke on designated breaks.

insancerre · 15/09/2017 19:13

Where I work smokers are not allowed to smoke in uniform, on the premises or within sight of the building
They don't get extra breaks either

zukiecat · 15/09/2017 19:13

I work in a small supermarket and I have never smoked

I get a 15 minute break for a 5 hour shift and 20 minutes for a 7 hour

The smokers spend half their shifts outside smoking, as well as their designated breaks

I work evenings and weekends when the boss isn't there, so they get away with it all the time

The boss is also a smoker and she pretty much turns a blind eye to all the skivers

It really annoys me and the other non-smokers

HunterHearstHelmsley · 15/09/2017 19:34

We're allowed to go out for smoke breaks whenever really. As long as everything gets done.

They did try to stop it last year. Smokers insisted coffee breaks were stopped too, which was agreed. It lasted about 3 days after the coffee ban 😂

ILoveMillhousesDad · 15/09/2017 19:56

Going back a few years now and I used to work in a college. There was a fag room and you could go and have a smoke whenever you felt like it.

In another part of the college that was based in a different building, people could smoke in their offices!!!

Mad when you think about it now.

SideOrderofSprouts · 15/09/2017 19:57

I only go
On my lunch break. I don't have any other breaks

TurquoiseDress · 15/09/2017 19:59

I remember working in an office as a student- the smokers used to head out en masse for a fag v frequently during the day.

Myself & others used to go off for an extra tea break/pop to lovely cafe next door to take our 'smoking time'

Not a very productive work place I imagine but I was there as a summer temp and didn't really care!

Plink42 · 15/09/2017 20:06

Ppl at my wrk go out for cig breaks a lot- hacks me off - why shud they.
It's discrimination in my eyes becuz I don't smoke ! I'm starting to go for a break when others go for fags. It means if I don't they get paid more than me! These so called fag breaks cost 5 mins an hour. In a shift 40mins extra. It's not on.

anon97528996 · 15/09/2017 20:16

I work in an office, myself and the other smokers tend to take one break in the morning and one in the afternoon, unless it's a very slow or stressful afternoon in which case we sometimes go twice. However I usually take 30-45 mins for lunch instead of an hour because I just get bored whereas lots of colleagues take the piss (one took an 1h40 lunch today!!), I come into the office early to make my coffee instead of loads of tea breaks, and to be fair I'm often joined by non-smokers stretching their legs or on their way down to the corner shop... I have no doubt there are people who judge me but no one has complained and I'm conscious to not take the piss.

Sayyouwill · 15/09/2017 20:34

I allow my staff to take 5 mins when it's quiet so the non-smokers get to have a bit of fresh air. If I catch a smoker taking the piss or going out for extra breaks without permission or going out when it's busy under the pretence of doing another task elsewhere, I take time off their actual break.

MrGrumpy01 · 15/09/2017 20:44

At my place smokers can take as many breaks as they like as long as they clock out. I'm not sure if they just then take a shorter lunch.

mouse26 · 15/09/2017 21:22

In my old job, when I smoked, we could just go for a smoke whenever, but none of us took the piss so it wasn't a problem. Then I started vaping instead and was allowed to do that at my desk. In my new job the only break is at lunch so all smokers/vapers just have to wait.

phoenix1973 · 15/09/2017 21:25

Where i work staff are not permitted to smoke at all anywhere during the working day. Even on lunch if theyre wearing ID pass or uniform.
Draconian.
I dont smoke so it doesnt worry me.

RonSwansonsMoustache · 15/09/2017 21:28

No smoke breaks where I work. You can smoke on your lunch or tea break, but you have to go and stand well away from shop to do so.
