Smoking breaks @ work

Hello there

Was going to ask if there are any smokers who can't go for a cigarette while at work, except their lunch break.

Just curious. Thanks

My workplace treats us like adults and we can have as many breaks as we want as long as we do our jobs and meet deadlines.

It's not about "treating people like adults"; there are simply a lot of jobs where people simply cannot wander off and take a break whenever they want.

I'm in the very fortunate position that I could, if I wanted, take as many smoking breaks as I wanted.
To do so would be stupid for a number of reasons.
Firstly, peer pressure would not allow me. As it should be.
Secondly, I'd not be as productive as I should be.
So, I take as many smoke breaks as I feel is reasonable and I do not take my paid breaks and my full lunch break (totally assiduous about this!)
What it comes down to, is don't be a dick about it. Like everything.

Im a civil servant and usually work flexi so can do 10 hours per day and get a half hour lunch during which you can smoke.
You get 2 15 minute breaks and can go get coffee etc during the day at other times but if you are caught out of the office anytime but lunch, you face a disciplinary and warnings.

I feel i would be more productive if i could smoke on my breaks. I usually work through them but some people eat breakfast and take the piss taking 30 minute breaks. If im in work and have to go 6 hours without a smoke but hour 4 all i can think about is a smoke and constantly clock watch.

OP is here. I can't smoke at work at all, they even comment if it's on my lunch break. I do find it ridiculous. I need to quit Asap Smile

OP try vaping if you feel you are ready.

My sister did this because she could not smoke cigs as often as she needed at work and turned into a female werewolf!!

Now she can nip to the loo anytime she wants and have a puff of the vape. Godsend and so much healthier. But that's many another thread of angst and disagreements. Vaping is allowed in our house it doesn't smell and everyone is happy.

Please try it, because smoking is not supported anywhere now.

I wouldn't even knowingly employ a smoker let alone give them additional breaks. That said, most work from home a lot of the time so it's a non issue but if out and about representing work, I'd have an issue with someone being seen smoking.

I have three official breaks during the day: 15 mins mid-morning, hour for lunch and 15 mins mid-afternoon.
I smoke, basically, when I want to.
I’m buggered if I’d take all my breaks and lunchtime too (yes, that means I have the choice and choose to not do so).
It comes down to Not Being A Cock.
Bit like life.

Only one colleague smokes... Most are much too health conscious for that! She has one at lunchtime bit no other breaks. Where would you even go? Presumably out for a walk which I guess would eat into work time

itsbetterthanabox · 11/10/2017 22:15

I don't smoke but it's in my contract that we can't smoke before shift or on break let alone taking extra breaks!

WorraLiberty · 11/10/2017 22:25

The smokers at my work (council), can only smoke on their lunch breaks, although I've noticed one or two will light up if they're doing something outside in the grounds, such as taking the rubbish to the bins round the back of the building, or litter picking in the grounds outside.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 11/10/2017 22:56

how much is a packet of fags these days? If you smoke twenty a day then for many that's an hours pay!

Where I used to work, We stopped smoking on site totally but then people disappeared and there was concern that this could cause a fire risk if butts were discarded badly, smoking breaks were then introduced and smokers could take the few minutes to smoke and the time was deducted off their lunch breaks, the smoking shelter was in easy view of everyone and easily monitored, however in just a few years nearly all gave up and it become a bit of a stigma.

toooldforthisshirt37 · 12/10/2017 09:12

"but it sounds like you would prefer the others to suffer, you don't actually want extra breaks."

Are you kidding? How are smokers suffering if they don't have smoke breaks? Because they are craving a drug they are addicted to? While the smug non-smokers snigger at their work, not wanting extra breaks but happy to watch other people suffer?

Are smokers more entitled than non smokers? I routinely am asked to cover for colleagues who want to smoke, I refuse. No is a complete sentence, nothing wrong with that.

lazyarse123 · 12/10/2017 10:17

I used to be a cleaner. There were 3 of us and I was in charge. It was in an NHS building so no smoking anywhere on the premises. Every night the other 2 would volunteer to take the rubbish out mid way through our shift, unfortunately for them I could see them on a monitor (not checking just happened to be cleaning it) smoking by the bins.I told them not to do it. If they had asked for 5 minutes for a CIG break I would have okayed it. It was the fact of them taking the piss I objected to.
