To be horrified there was a large spider on my babies head?!

Baby is 10 months, ds8 was playing with her in the living room then brought her through to me in the kitchen. He's holding her and there's a giant black hunting spider on her white blond hair (so extremely obvious)!!!! I brush it off, scream, it falls to the floor and I hoover it up.

My son didn't realise..
I don't think I handled it well.

But why do we have so many spiders at the moment?! My dh found its 'brother' the other evening. It was speeding around the carpet, I assumed it was a bit of fluff from a draft.

My house is fairly clean but we only moved in last Christmas when it was a total wreck but since we've put new floorboards down, plastered everywhere, new wiring/plumbing etc.

Aibu that I'm feeling quite shaken up and disgusted by them? Do I have a problem?

Anyone know a natural deterrent?!

And what was the thing doing in the living room at 8am in the morning?!

Advice please.

It's spider season. They come indoors looking for a mate.

At 8am it was probably up bright and early to get there before all the others!

There are lots of deterrents I have seen recommended but not sure how effective they are. Conkers, cedar, peppermint or eucalyptus are supposed to help. I am going to buy some cedar stuff from Lakeland today to put around and I'll make a peppermint or eucalyptus spray with essential oil. You can also buy Spider Stop from Lakeland.

Oh that picture Grin cruel! Cruel!
Conkers don't work, I've seen them crawling around them.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 05/09/2017 09:21

Keep them, they eat dirty flies

orangeowls · 05/09/2017 09:22

Mrsovertheroad Grin

There was one playing in my daughter toys last night. We spotted it while watching TV. Luckily we have a cat so it didn't last long, I usually just find bits of spiders from where they have been eaten/played with by the cat.

Neverknowing · 05/09/2017 09:23

My dad swears by conkers by the door to stop spiders. There are massive ones. We live in Hertfordshire so we get the worlds most awful ones ugh.

Partypolitics99 · 05/09/2017 09:24

I found a nest the other day in one of our cupboards. Posted on here about it. Massive spider and about 100 babies 🤢

Penguin27 · 05/09/2017 09:26

I think you handled it. Enter than I would have done OP... I would have hoovered the baby! Grin

I saw on tv last week that they lay up to 1500 eggs, so yes they eat the flies but get the buggers out of your house!!

RaeCJ82 · 05/09/2017 09:27

Orangeowls it's the same in my house. We have two cats and so far they seem to be keeping them at bay. Sometimes they toy with them for such a long time that I worry the really big ones will get away. I might spray some peppermint in corners etc though as a back up measure!

dollydaydream114 · 05/09/2017 09:28

I think if this happened to me I would have to leave the house, have the baby adopted and live in a sterile room with sealed windows for the rest of my life.

Penguin27 · 05/09/2017 09:28

*Handled it better

lavenderpekins · 05/09/2017 09:30

Holy crap partypolitics

I feel ill still. On edge & jumpy. I didn't use to be like this I'm sure?!

We have a Lakeland near us. Thank you for the suggestions so far.

Oh and dh has an extremely inconsiderate cat allergy. Weep.

SpamHeadedBastard · 05/09/2017 09:32

There's been a few humongous ones in my house. I don't mind those.

This morning however, there was a weird pale one on the draining board that gave no fucks that I was there. I prodded it with a teaspoon and it just took a few steps away. It's mate was in the sink with the same attitude. I've never seen spiders like them before. Hideous things.

Partypolitics99 · 05/09/2017 09:37

Also DH was away with work so I had to wait two days for him to get rid. I actually taped the cuboard shut.

Troika · 05/09/2017 09:37

It's just the time of year I think, we've had a couple of big house spiders recently. I would freak out if there was one on the baby too!
You can get plug in things to repel them, lemon oil on door/window frames etc is meant to help, conkers ...
Our cats are pretty good at killing them too.

Love it, MrsOverTheRoad

HateSummer · 05/09/2017 09:39

There was one on my dd's leg in the shower. Doesn't help I let her watch arachnophobia a week before Blush..

DeegeeDee · 05/09/2017 09:43

Love but hate it, Mrsovertheroad

catmumof1 · 05/09/2017 09:43

I have the 'spider stop' it looks like a pintrest project (think febreeze with a monster spray sticker) but my mum swears by it!
I prefer something a bit more brutal; the flea spray for carpets from pets at home/vets kills anything bug-like that hits the carpet for about a year.

lavenderpekins · 05/09/2017 09:49

Is 'spider stop' from Lakeland?

"I feel ill still. On edge & jumpy. I didn't use to be like this I'm sure?!"

Omg!!! I could have written this myself. Last night, there was a big spider downstairs (feel icky even writing it Sad) and I was absolutely horrified and disgusted. I've never reacted so strongly to one and I kept wondering why!

CaoNiMartacus · 05/09/2017 09:51

Get a cat!

The only spiders I see are dead ones that have had a mauling from CaoNiCats.

lavenderpekins · 05/09/2017 09:53

Can't get a cat! 😭

There was one in our bath this morning. For reasons I won't go into, there was water in the bath. There was also a sponge. The spider had climbed onto the sponge as was having a merry old time floating about on its little pontoon.
