To be horrified there was a large spider on my babies head?!

Baby is 10 months, ds8 was playing with her in the living room then brought her through to me in the kitchen. He's holding her and there's a giant black hunting spider on her white blond hair (so extremely obvious)!!!! I brush it off, scream, it falls to the floor and I hoover it up.

My son didn't realise..
I don't think I handled it well.

But why do we have so many spiders at the moment?! My dh found its 'brother' the other evening. It was speeding around the carpet, I assumed it was a bit of fluff from a draft.

My house is fairly clean but we only moved in last Christmas when it was a total wreck but since we've put new floorboards down, plastered everywhere, new wiring/plumbing etc.

Aibu that I'm feeling quite shaken up and disgusted by them? Do I have a problem?

Anyone know a natural deterrent?!

And what was the thing doing in the living room at 8am in the morning?!

Advice please.

lavenderpekins Hardly anything will actually eat slugs, apparently. They're basically just watery jelly with hardly any nutritional value and the slime makes them hard to digest. People think hedgehogs and birds love them but I was recently informed by an expert in such things that they only eat them as an absolute last resort - certainly the hedgehogs in my garden never touch them. They literally sniff them and walk on by!

If blackbirds catch slugs they will spend ages bashing them on the ground afterwards to get all the slime off before they eat them/feed them to their babies.

I'm quite slug-sensitive at the moment as we moved house last year and they keep getting in under the front door Shock

When my son learnt how to walk and pick up things, he brought me something in his balled up fist.

I had a bad feeling, but didn't want to reject him. Horrified when he handed me a dead red spider.

I'm pretty scared of spiders. Tried to hide my fear. bleugh.

I wrapped myself in a toasty towel off the radiator after my bath last week. Guess what crawled off the towel on to my shoulder? One of those ginormous house spiders Sad I still wake up in a cold sweat thinking about it.

A few years ago when DD was about 3 I walked into the upstairs hall and he said 'mummy there's a big spider one me' to which I said 'yes there is' because he had PJs with a huge tarantula applique. But then it move onto his neck and then head - I totally freaked and kicked up to kick it off - at which point DH walked out of our bedroom to see what looked like me kicking DS in the head. Thankfully the spider was then running along the hall directly at him so he believed my excuse!!
