To be fed up of Instamums

Hmmmmx100 · 25/08/2017 22:56

I followed a few of the more well-known Instamums but got weary of the constant daily barrage of brand endorsements. I can't relate to people on £100k a year in Farrow & Ball houses. I just can't. So I had to unfollow em all, every one. AIBU to feel a bit miffed that these people are using the idea of sisterhood to make money? They're not our friends, they're just there to sell us stuff that we probably don't need anyway.

Farrow and ball is really shitly made paint. Some of the ones I tried were just rubbish painters in the trade get it made up to the same colour with trade paint.

So it's all, all of it, smoke, mirrors, filters and elephant grey bullshit.

doodledragon · 26/08/2017 17:46

Should be a comma between 'made' and 'painters'.

Brittbugs80 · 26/08/2017 17:53

Midwife with the four daughters who's written a book and the husband who's cashing in hugely

The American mother and father of five who left leafy Highgate and travelled the world, recently settling in Australia. No tv the kids only play with wooden toys. My arse

I love both of these families!! Though the bottom one does seem too perfect. I'm my head, the kids are shits and she screams like a fishwife at them!

Pappawasarollingbone · 26/08/2017 17:59

What I don't like it that if you've already taken the cash and the free holiday can you give an honest review? I can't see how you can. Sorry if someone had already said this I'm cooking dinner and unloading the dishwasher etc.

Who is this one please? Can someone Dm me?

ElspethFlashman · 26/08/2017 18:44

Pappa they're grossly overstretched though. Apparently their total monthly mortgage for the two places is 6k or something??! That's why they need to work so much!

Pappawasarollingbone · 26/08/2017 18:47

Elspeth oh ok.
I

putdownyourphone · 26/08/2017 18:50

Yea I follow a certain one who constantly advertises stuff on her page. I saw her talk recently thinking she would be really cool - she was a knob and said she hates people who only do ads on their insta! Just like she does!

putdownyourphone · 26/08/2017 18:51

Ah, seen she's already been mentioned - it was the midwife

putdownyourphone · 26/08/2017 18:53

She wasn't funny or particularly nice and took herself very seriously

ElspethFlashman · 26/08/2017 19:02

Yeah that's why she occasionally suddenly gets very anxious about money and goes on a total spending ban. They're both freelance and have no job security. They should sell that holiday house, it cost £1M, it's madness!

Pappawasarollingbone · 26/08/2017 19:11

Elspeth how do you know this stuff?

Fairylea · 26/08/2017 19:16

I enjoy following them. And the unmumsymum wrote a very good post about the ad or not to ad thing a day or so ago I think it was.

I can't blame them for cashing in on their success, I think I would do the same thing, I just wish they'd be a bit more selective about what they advertise sometimes so it wasn't so obviously money grabbing. People like and follow all these accounts because they can relate to them, if they start to lose their "core" the followers will drop off.

ElspethFlashman · 26/08/2017 19:20

He wrote a series of (pretty funny) articles about buying it! I read them at the time like Shock at the complete lack of any apparent budget.

OneOfTheGrundys · 26/08/2017 19:24

They do my head in.
There's one that I know vaguely, through social circles. She has two accounts. One's the public, child friendly face where her kids make creations out of home made playdoh, talk about/sketch stuff at Tate modern and play creatively on the beach with arty friends. The other, private account is the unwholesome party one with the drugs and sex.
I don't check them out any more. They're so far from reality that they've become a fiction. Fun to dip in and out of but no more than an art form.

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 26/08/2017 19:37

If anyone has time then check out Claire Witt on YouTube/insta

She's very nice, very real and very 'mumsnet'

eekmumps · 26/08/2017 19:41

Who is the American family who've moved to Australia?

NaughtyNannyPlum · 26/08/2017 19:53

I follow Claire Witt mum- I think she is very different (in a good way!) to most of them.

JuniUmiZoomi · 26/08/2017 19:54

I'm so intrigued by some of them. I don't follow the flex one, but she gets recommended a lot by the others, and I wonder how far back it's all planned out, with various family members' accounts following the 'theme'. I've noticed a lot of them are managed by the same company so I guess that's got something to do with them apparently being BFFs.

langkaw · 26/08/2017 19:55

I like the foodwriters wife. Her stories can be ridiculously out of touch with reality but she seems very genuinely self deprecating and funny.

I follow a lot of them for laughs. Midwife's husband does my nut in with his 'hilarious' tales of messy family chaos that are just that little bit too long and contrived.

I also follow the twee one we can't talk about on here. The one with the little family. With the cups of tea on the bed who loves her boys.

TealStar · 26/08/2017 19:58

Can you remember the thread that got pulled on here which was started by an interiors/instamum who was made by her house or something She sounded like a really nasty piece of work. Because she was anonymous here she let her true colours come through and she then got outed by mumsnetters that recognised her! Duh.

I used to follow interiors peeps but found the lack of originality (basically they seemed to all be getting sponsored by the same people) and cliqueyness.... funnily enough all the giveaways are won by the popular 'grammers, and there was just so much back slapping and air kissing it started to get on my tits. I mean, who has time for the relentless styling, the contrived photos etc...? Clearly most are supported by wealthy husbands. I also found the ruthless ambition quite tiresome. Especially those who follow you just to get you to follow you back then unfollow you as soon as you do. It's all so fake and schoolkid-like. so I don't really follow many anymore. If I want some inspiration I now know where to look but I don't need it in my face everyday!

eekmumps · 26/08/2017 19:59

And who's the twee one??

TealStar · 26/08/2017 20:00

I also can't help but this kind that anyone who shares their lives on social media is insecure and wanting validation. I don't think it's necessarily all about the sponsorship/ not at first at least.

TealStar · 26/08/2017 20:01

Lang law is the twee one I mention in the post below? Grin
