Not to replace babysitter's ipad screen that DD2 cracked

DD2 managed to slip over holding teenage babysitter's iPad last night. Complete accident.

It was babysitters decision to bring it - there was no need for her to. And really she should have it in a case. But I digress, because of course I would be unreasonable not to have it repaired.

It's a major PITA because I can't drive right now so I've done long bus journey to nearest town with a repair place (who quoted £60 over the phone) to be told once there that her iPad glass (the latest, 2017 model, which is just called IPad, or colloquially IPad 5) isn't replaceable on its own - they tried to charge me £200 to order in a whole new screen, plus as yet undefined fitting cost.

I'm suspecting/hoping that they were uninformed or trying to con me, but I don't have much signal (on bus home now with tearful DD2) so google research is slow.

6 missed calls from babysitter on when she can expect her iPad back, which I'm dodging until I have more idea. Help me to not be unreasonable and point me in the direction of cost effective and fast way of repairing it please, please, please...

Could you agree an amount of money to give her instead of organising the repair yourself?

Did you goto Apple or to one of those local repair places? My phone was left next to an open window and the heavens opened, killing the charge port. Apple refuse to mend, offering to sell me a reconditioned one for £400 whereas the local repair shop replaced the port for £30....

If it's new it will still be under apple's warranty so if you take it to the apple store they'll fix it for free.

Give her £200 and ask her never to bring her iPad again. What was she doing with it out anyway?

Your contents insurance or her family's might cover it - preferably hers to not affect your no claims bonus

You can buy repair kits to do them yourself but I would not have the confidence to do that.

You child broke it, yes an accident but they still broke it.

They unfortunately are right, order models has a separate glass (digitiser) and bit under the screen (LCD), whereas Apple are bastards these days and have now joined them into one combined expensive digitiser and LCD.

It is possible to separate them but no small repair shop would have this ability and those who could would certainly charge a premium to do it.

Prior to this it was a £60 job, as I said, Apple are bastards....

I'd offer a nominal amount to repair it but nothing more. If a repair isnt possible then the babysitter has some money towards a replacement. You do not have to replace it.

Baby sitter chose to have an expensive piece of tech without a case.
They chose to bring it baby sitting.
They allowed a child to wander around carrying it.

I wouldn't be paying for it at all, it was her choice to give it to the child. It's not like it's a item a child must have so why did she give it to the child anyway?

Why on earth should the babysitter's family lose their NCB because some else's child broke their iPad whilst it wasn't even in their house?! Whether she was right to bring it etc your daughter was holding it and she broke it.

As she's had it less than a year you need to take it back to the Apple Store otherwise you'll invalidate the warranty. They will likely charge you for fixing it though given that it's because of a fall it was broken rather than because of anything within the device...

It was her choice to bring it and to let DD touch it, I don't think it's your responsibility at all.

I'd probably (if I wanted to use her again) give her a token amount towards it and then leave her to sort it out herself.

Reminds my of the time when my baby pulled a button off my sisters laptop. I had to pay £50 to get one key replaced. Yabu your kid so you have to pay regardless accident or not (my dd was only 9 months at the time so obviously wasn't on purpose either)

She shouldn't have given your lo her ipad. Especially without a case. I wouldn't wander around with my own ipad and no case as an adult either.

Poor you! Yeah you're gonna need to fix it & tell her please not to bring it over again.

Six missed calls is a bit much. I personally would not let a seven year old anywhere anything of mine if I could help it!
