Not to replace babysitter's ipad screen that DD2 cracked

Somerville · 22/08/2017 13:58

DD2 managed to slip over holding teenage babysitter's iPad last night. Complete accident.

It was babysitters decision to bring it - there was no need for her to. And really she should have it in a case. But I digress, because of course I would be unreasonable not to have it repaired.

It's a major PITA because I can't drive right now so I've done long bus journey to nearest town with a repair place (who quoted £60 over the phone) to be told once there that her iPad glass (the latest, 2017 model, which is just called IPad, or colloquially IPad 5) isn't replaceable on its own - they tried to charge me £200 to order in a whole new screen, plus as yet undefined fitting cost. Shock

I'm suspecting/hoping that they were uninformed or trying to con me, but I don't have much signal (on bus home now with tearful DD2) so google research is slow.

6 missed calls from babysitter on when she can expect her iPad back, which I'm dodging until I have more idea. Help me to not be unreasonable and point me in the direction of cost effective and fast way of repairing it please, please, please...

How much do refurbished iPads cost? Would that be cheaper?

I'd want like for like in that case, especially as the iPad is new.

And a refurbished iPad that costs less than a repair wouldn't be like for like.

Justdontknow4321 · 22/08/2017 14:52

I doubt the babysitter is going to keep coming back for a crappy goodwill gesture.

kingfishergreen · 22/08/2017 14:54

I used iMend, they came out to my house the same day to replace the screen of my iPhone (6s). It appeared that they replaced the whole LCD bit, but I'm not sure.

It cost £104.

Justdontknow4321 · 22/08/2017 14:55

The babysitter is 16 which would explain the 6 missed calls, she's practically a kid herself. Impatient and wants to know when she will get it back.

Why should she have a refurb one, just get the screen fixedConfused

PotteringAlong · 22/08/2017 14:55

A quick google tells me that both Argos and John Lewis sell new iPad 5's for £399.99

LonginesPrime · 22/08/2017 14:55

I do acknowledge, and did in my OP, that this is my responsibility, BTW

OP, I was wondering why you were getting such a flaming too, since you seemed to be taking full responsibility to get the iPad fixed i your OP...then I realised that it's your title people are responding to.

Bluntness100 · 22/08/2017 14:56

Really what this thread highlights is that some people honestly believe people can take no responsibility for their own possessions and then expect others to fix the outcome of their poor decisions

Nonsense. What it highlights is if you borrow something from someone and you break it you are responsible for fixing or replacing it and some folks will take no responsibility for them or their child's actions in borrowing and breaking something belonging to someone else.

drspouse · 22/08/2017 14:58

If I took my iPad to work, my Guides, or a nursery carer took their own iPad to nursery, it would be my responsibility, or the carers.
How is this different?

OnionKnight · 22/08/2017 14:58

The new iPad starts from £339.

SoupDragon · 22/08/2017 14:59

It could have been a 45 yo handing her iPad to a 2 yo.

Apart from the fact the OP said it was a teenage babysitter.

Somerville · 22/08/2017 15:00

Apologies, I'm getting behind because my connection is so crappy.

Any idea on where the screens are listed online? I want to work out if £200 is the real cost or not. And any recommendations for where might give me an accurate quote for fitting it, as I'm not signing my name to a blank cheque like this place (local independent repair place) wanted.

In terms of DD2 not looking after it - it wasn't that. (I'd be docking half her pocket money for the next x years if she'd been really careless.) But our iPad is in an otterbox case, so has good grip and is well defended. This one is very thin and shiny. They were watching YouTube while eating pizza, and it slipped from her grasp (presumably because her fingers were greasy).

Its pretty straight forward. It was an accident, doesn't matter who's fault it was because it was in ops premises whilst carrying out her job

Utter nonsense. If you take an item into work and break it there it isn't your employers responsibility to fix just because it is on their premises. Especially when it has nothing to do with your work and you really shouldn't have brought it, and if you insisted you should have protected it better.

MaisyPops · 22/08/2017 15:02

bluntness
The babysitter chose to bring their item.
They chose to have an expensive item and not put it in a protective case.
They chose to give it to a child.

I would feel differently if they'd bothered to put a protective case on it, but if someone is silly enough to not bother with a case then I'm afraid they can't come back on other people if their item gets damaged when the damage occured because they couldn't be arsed to put a case on it.

SacharissaCrisplock · 22/08/2017 15:03

I think £200 is probably not far off the mark. Yesterday I managed to smash the screen on my iPhone 6s and Apple are quoting £135 to replace the screen.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/08/2017 15:03

God Soupy that means I would have had to read the thread properly You have such unobtainable expectations...

MadeForThis · 22/08/2017 15:03

Call Apple Care. They will give you the cost for Apple to repair/exchange. It will probably be the sameish cost as you were quoted but will keep the warranty intact.

If your DD had been younger I would only have offered 50% as babysitter chose to not supervise the child or the iPad. At age 10 your DD should be held accountable too. Lose some pocket money etc. But I would want to know the circumstances. Did she ask permission to use it.

At the end of the day accidents happen. This once will just be an expensive one.

anotherAnotherUsername · 22/08/2017 15:04

Look on Amazon.

Post the model number and you'll get some help finding it.

This looks like the same model and is on offer for £269!

I certainly wouldn't pay £200 plus for a repair if a brand new one can be obtained for a few pounds more. I would consider offering 50% of the cost of a brand new one which I think is fair.

Are you absolutely sure the screen wasn't damaged in any way Somer before your dd tripped? The fact that you have received so many calls from babysitter already is a bit of red flag to me 🤔. If just feels like she is double checking that YOU are taking responsibility if that makes sense. or maybe it is just me being a suspicious cow hmm

MaisyPops · 22/08/2017 15:05

They were watching YouTube while eating pizza, and it slipped from her grasp (presumably because her fingers were greasy).
So not not only has the babysitter not bothered to put a case on it, she handed it to a child with greasy hand who was eating pizza.
And this is apparently the (absent!) parent's responsibility yo fix it.

Lessons learned. Use a protective case.
Dont hand expensive things to children who are eating / greasy hands.

Mrscropley · 22/08/2017 15:06

Babysitting is a job.

Who takes an iPad to work and uses it in work time?
She is trying to pull a fast one. .

Rafflesway · 22/08/2017 15:06

It just feels

JigglyTuff · 22/08/2017 15:08

If it's brand new, it needs to go back to Apple - any other repair will invalidate the warranty.

Looks like it will cost £250 support.apple.com/en-gb/ipad/repair/screen-damage

MaisyPops · 22/08/2017 15:09

Mrscropley
I can see why a babysitter would have an ipad for after the children are in bed. Just like a big phone. When i babysat during a levels id take my folders along and revise.

My issues are:

  • no protective case
  • gave it to a child
  • child had greasy hands

There is a part of me wonders if it was already a little damaged and this is a convenient way to get someone to cough up.

StaplesCorner · 22/08/2017 15:09

My DD is 16, I have insurance that would cover it, specifically outside of the house. My DD wouldn't know or understand that, its not on her radar. So please do get her to check with her parents just in case.

Also, if my DD was in this situation, I would be cross with her for letting the younger girl have the iPad, but I would be offering to go halves with the OP. Anyway, that's just my take on it - I can imagine the OP's DD saying oo can I have a go and the babysitter thinking well I suppose it will be ok ....

OnionKnight · 22/08/2017 15:11

That seems a bit far fetched, imagine the babysitter waiting for someone to drop it Hmm
