To take toddler to scan?

I need an ultrasound next week. As I have a few problems and on letter is specifically says children are not allowed in whilst scan is being done

She is 2 I can put her in pushchair. I have no one that can Have her at all.

Husband is working and I don't have parents

So my options are not to go or take her and just explain . If I rearrange it there is no guarantee that husband won't be working as he is ambulance shifts.

What would you do

You need to organise a babysitter of some sort. They have specifically said no children.

I have taken my toddler along to scans whilst strapped into a pushchair and I've never had an issue. However I've never received a letter saying I couldn't.

I too would ring them and ask. If it's a definite no then perhaps you can reschedule and organise some childcare.

They usually won't allow it, especially as it is specified. It's dark and unfamiliar in the scanning room so even if your toddler is in a pushchair they still may get upset and be a distraction to the sonographer. I would call and see if they can help offer a solution. It's also worth seeing if any ad hoc childcare is available in your area.

Children can get scared of the machines they use and if it's in a dark room. You also could possibly be recieving bad news which is another reason not to take them.

My hospital states no children and that only one person can accompany you, but I know of lots of people who have taken their DC to scans.

I had to take my DS to a later scan to check position and growth as by the end I was having 2 weekly scans and no one could have him. He was fine and sat quietly with some chocolate buttons, I called ahead and they said it would be fine to bring him.

I'd definatley call though so you aren't made to rearrange.

Do you really have no friends at all who could have her? Even if you took her and the friend and they waited in the waiting room while you went in?

Can your husband not take a few hours off work? your health is important at the end of the day so he will need to help!

I think that is probably the standard letter then, I suppose it stops 80% of those who would either bring the whole family. I have a friend who took to her 12 week scan, both of her parents, her 3 yo son and her DH. She was suprised that the tech asked atleast her parents if they could wait outside as it was too crowded!

Ideally if you have any other choice I'd leave your DC at home as it did make it slightly more stressful for me, but if you don't have another option I'm sure it will be fine if you ring ahead just bring snacks and toys

I would call ahead and explain the situation. I recently found myself needing an X-ray and had my 9 month in tow with nobody available to help out. I brought him in popped him behind the safety area and the radiology assistants watched him. I explained the problem and they were more than happy to help out.

I imagine it's a generic letter that is sent out from the radiology department which is inclusive of all investigations they do including MRI/CT where you really cannot have anyone in the room with you.

YABU rules are for everyone and when somewhere like a hospital says no DC they must have very good reason.

If it's really not allowed and your DH can't take time off, there's always things like sitters.co.uk. It's good to have back-up for situations like this (and more fun things) so you're not stuck feeling like you're the only person in the world who can look after your baby.

oh and l used to work in a hospital and we were always terribly understaffed and probably even more so these days so someone asking us to keep an eye on their DC ( which obviously is a responsibility you can't do a half assed job of ) was at times a bigger deal than you might think.
