i have no idea why I am constantly constipated. It makes me a miserable old bag

You may already be doing this. If so, ignore.

To relieve constipation:

Drink masses of water (3 litres a day)
Eat five or more pieces/portions of fruit a day (especially soft fruit, cherries, strawberries etc)
Don't eat processed food
Go for a brisk 30 minute walk every day

paulaplumpbottom · 29/03/2007 16:54

I eat a handful of dried apricots or prunes everyday, plus i have bran flakes for breakfast

stleger · 29/03/2007 16:57

I don't do hat daily. But porridge is good.

Have you got a juicer?

If so, juice 5 apples and 5 pears and drink it all. In one go if you can. Stay near a loo for the next 2 hours. And don't fart or else you'll mess your pants.

Trust me, this works. [winks]

BigEggLittleEgg · 29/03/2007 17:33

I love to talk poo.

I have a sprinkling of flax powder (linseed) on my shreddies every morning. It really helps! You can get it at health food shops.

Keep us updated on poo status...

BigEggLittleEgg · 29/03/2007 17:34

Piglit!!

Anna8888 · 29/03/2007 17:35

Branflakes are not such a good idea - they are very tough on the intestines. Shredded wheat helps and is gentler.

Fruit definitely is good.

Try otherwise a tablespoon of golden linseeds (from a healthfood shop) mixed up in natural yoghurt. Disgusting but very efficient.

ClariceB · 29/03/2007 17:46

Branflakes MAKE me constipated. Bread can also be very constipating.

Coffee first thing (lots of) is a good idea and delaying breakfast slightly.

piglit · 29/03/2007 17:50

And a glass of very very hot water with a slice of lemon in it as soon as you wake up.

amidaiwish · 29/03/2007 19:41

take a probiotic
and i swear by a good coffee. stimulates the system i was told by a scuba diving instructor. works a treat.

WinkyWinkola · 29/03/2007 19:45

Lightly boil three prunes and three apricots for three minutes.

Blend and mix in with some weetabix or oatibix.

It's very tasty and will get the old guts working. Guaranteed.

allieBongo · 29/03/2007 22:04

i love you all.. and so will my bowel i'm sure. i think one of the main issues is that i often miss my "poo window" when i'm ready to go because the kids want something, or i'm at work. i'm just a creature of habit! will try the flax powder as i have no juicer. thanks again

All Bran every morning - let the milk sit on it for a couple of minutes until it softens slightly. A couple of hours later - happy days

tinkerbellhadpiles · 29/03/2007 22:20

Exercise is an excellent way to get things moving IYSWIM

Or in our house, simply wait till DH has locked himself in with a book, instant need to poo

allieBongo · 29/03/2007 22:29

I recommend the hot water and lemon juice thing too.

Alternatively you could have a curry with 2 or 3 pints of guiness!

puffling · 29/03/2007 22:34

Try more exercise. I find even a walk to the loo gets things going.

Boco · 29/03/2007 22:36

nux vomica

Not usually a particular homeopathic rememdy fan, never had any that actually worked, until nux vomica when i was pg and couldn't poo. AY-mazin. You can get them from Boots now.

gingernut · 29/03/2007 22:51

I find plenty of soft fruit usually keeps me going, but not always. Sometimes I get constipated just before a period. At that point dietary measures don't always help me and only lactulose will do the trick.
