i have no idea why I am constantly constipated. It makes me a miserable old bag

I use powedered barley grass every day. A tsp in a small glass of juice keeps it regular.

Barley Grass

Think of something really really exciting, that always works for me I don't know why...

I then get the runs,
Yum

MrsBadger · 31/03/2007 11:50

do not miss the poo window

whatever I eat seems to make no difference but if I miss the window I start a three-day cycle of agony.

your guts know - listen!

DeviousDaffodil · 31/03/2007 11:51

I find Activia keeps me rugeular. One pot daily.
If i rellay need to get things moving, I find a glass of beer normally has the desired effect.
Not sure why, maybe it is the hops?

Nbg · 31/03/2007 12:08

Im sure she'll love me sharing this, but my MIL is terrible with this and can quite easily go up to 3 weeks without having a poo.

Shes found colonic irrigation the way forward

SaintGeorge · 31/03/2007 12:10

3 weeks seems extreme, but you don't have to go daily to be normal and regular.

Nbg · 31/03/2007 12:12

She said its ever since she had her first baby.
She was so scared to go to the loo after birth and held it in for ages, to the point where she was in total agony.
Now she has this.

When I had dd and ds I was lectured on making sure I went to the loo

The poor love has tried allsorts of laxitives and none of them work.

DeviousDaffodil · 31/03/2007 12:43

It is so painful esp afet a few days.
Three weeks must be absolute agony.
I would love to have colnic irrigation.

RanToTheHills · 31/03/2007 13:05

I've only just reaslied this is a serious thread, sorry! Thought it was a p*ss-take after the discussion on "am I unreasonable" threads... At the risk of stating the obvious, can't you treat constipation through diet alone? Surely eating enough fibre/fruit/veg gets most people going to the loo at least 1x a day?

allieBongo · 31/03/2007 16:05

no, not me. i don't drink alchohol, i drink plenty of water, ahev been avoiding bread, but still no poop, and definetly not a piss take as I feel horrendous

OP posts:
kiskidee · 31/03/2007 16:11

no you are not. i have a poo everyday and if i don't, then i end up having 2 the following day.

drink more water. exercise more etc. i see anna888 already said those.

i think a certain amt of genetics go into it too.

dh seems to have 2 everyday. he is like a duck. food goes in one end and troops off to the loo 3 minutes later.

we eat just about the same things and almost similar quantities.

kiskidee · 31/03/2007 16:11

why would you avoid bread? i eat loads of granary bread. at least 2 chunking slices per day as i cut my own.

allieBongo · 31/03/2007 22:12

it makes me feel bloated and uncomfortable. i've eaten a whole bag of dried apricots and am still poo-less

OP posts:
hoolagirl · 31/03/2007 22:14

I used to be like this years ago.
I was under immense stress at the time and think that had something to do with it.
So RELAX and eat well and look after yourself.

hoolagirl · 31/03/2007 22:15

Oh and a good drink clears me out

hoolagirl · 31/03/2007 22:15

Vodka

pollyanna · 31/03/2007 22:17

apparently it is common for women to miss the poo window and then this goes on to cause problems with constipation, piles etc.

My dh would rather die than miss the poo window.

3easterbunniesandnomore · 31/03/2007 22:23

lInseed is good too....
coffee on an empty stomoach also can make me go...but obvioulsy not a healthy trick

3easterbunniesandnomore · 31/03/2007 22:24

oh, and a poo a day is really unreasonable to expect...every other day or every 3'd the latest is reasonabel;)

Dinosaur · 31/03/2007 22:26

allieBongo, sympathies. I have same problems a lot of the time despite drinking lots of water, eating me five portions of fruit/veg, walking a lot etc etc etc.

melsy · 31/03/2007 22:32

Is it possible you are wheat intolerant, not so much a severe allergy but enough for the intestines to have problems moving things?

I swear by the boiled water ,lemon rind and juice, start day with a HUGE cup before any food.

Poor you , its nasty , Ive had it on a holiday trip in Israel (all those bloody schnitzels!),really makes you feel ill.

Oh come on, you can't find a better use of your time?

Createausername1970 · 03/09/2023 10:28

I have had bouts of diverticulitis in the past, so I did a lot of reading about how to avoid it. Interestingly, too much cereal based fibre can have the opposite effect for some people. So lots of bran and wholemeal bread will work for some, but could bung others up. My mum said it helped her, but I find too much causes me a problem.

I have berries and seeds with yoghurt most mornings and try and eat lots of veg.

If you are drinking water, add some chia seeds. Goes a bit like frogspawn if you leave it too long, but it's a simple way of getting additional fibre that is a bit easier for your guts to process.
