to have abandoned camp

We have been camping since Tuesday. it has rained since Tuesday. everything is wet. My last pair of dry pant succumbed this afternoon, so we have packed up and come home.

It feels very defeatist, this is the first time we have given in early, but sitting at home with warm , dry pants, socks ( and outer garments!) feels wonderful.

AIBU?

Yesterday or last Tuesday?

Either way I don't blame you, rain isn't fun when you're camping.

missmapp · 09/08/2017 19:29

Actually , it was Monday- I have even lost a day in the rain. in my defence, it was torrential .

Actually, I know I ABU, but I don't care !

You did better than me, I was booked to go camping yesterday and am still in my sitting room.

bigchris · 09/08/2017 19:30

I'd probably have given it a day longer Wink

LonginesPrime · 09/08/2017 19:30

Absolutely not!

I'm all for sticking things out and recall our tent sliding about in a total mudbath of a field a few years ago, but I didn't even want to walk from the bus stop in this weather, so I don't blame you at all!

I know it's massively cheating, but we 'camped' in a wooden wigwam last year and riding out the downpours was so much nicer!

bigchris · 09/08/2017 19:30

If it was monday yanbu !

Hoppinggreen · 09/08/2017 19:31

You've done better than me, I wouldn't even have gone in the first place!!

missmapp · 09/08/2017 19:33

We are all thawing out slowly. I don't normally mind the rain, but it was cold as well .
We have a couple of nights camping booked at the end of the month, I hope it is sunny by then !

Very brave and sensible, you are.

Unescorted · 09/08/2017 19:38

It it is a holiday not a pilgrimage.

MrsBobDylan · 09/08/2017 19:46

Yanbu, not even a weensy bit. Enjoy those home comforts, like dry pants!

fusspot66 · 09/08/2017 19:51

I'm just back from a 2 day camp - my tent is drying in the garden - it's lovely here at home now. Angry

PosiePootlePerkins · 09/08/2017 19:54

We're off camping to Devon tomorrow, wish us luck! Not so bad as we have a new campervan with heating, oh the luxury! Still somewhat dreading the sogginess of it though...

AlternativeTentacle · 09/08/2017 19:57

I would have been home a day earlier, if not on monday night. Brrr...

Scribblegirl · 09/08/2017 19:57

Depends. 3 days in torrential rain at a music festival - I wouldn't blink. 3 days in torrential rain when you're entertaining kids on a campsite in the arse end of nowhere - hell no!

Generally I find camping changes nature based on number of children and quantities of wine Grin

GutterStar · 09/08/2017 20:00

We're off camping in Weston Super Mare next week. The weather is making me nervous.

Boredboredboredboredbored · 09/08/2017 20:02

Fuck camping in bad weather, I would have done the exact same op.

Purdypie · 09/08/2017 20:04

Definitely not unreasonable! We camp A LOT. The other week we went camping, it started raining but we persevered and put up our 6 man tent. Loaded everything into the tent, all while the 1 year old cried. Then blew up the air bed, sat down and noticed a puddle by the door where the rain had come in (1 year old also noticed and thought it was great) we stayed 2 hours before we gave in, packed it all back up, came home and had a takeaway! Camping in the rain is shit.

JennyBlueWren · 09/08/2017 20:05

It's the guy ropes! No one seems to know how to properly do the guy ropes so that the tents don't leak! I had to go and readjust all the guy ropes when DH put up our tent a few weeks ago (I was erecting my old tent for my mum). Went in the tent and saw the sides touching the outside -a clear warning sign!

But YANBU to go home. Soggy camping is not fun. Sitting dry in a big tent playing cards and eating fish and chips whilst listening to the rain pattering on the roof is what holidays are about!

AcrossthePond55 · 09/08/2017 20:05

This is the reason we bought a caravan. That, and the fact that I refused to sleep on the ground any longer and I wanted my own bathroom.

There is nothing like sitting snug and dry in your caravan (or under the awning) watching the rain piss down on all the tent-dwellers. And nothing like having your own loo at 3 am. Grin

terrylene · 09/08/2017 20:06

Ideal weather for abandoning camp IMHO Wink

HipsterHunter · 09/08/2017 20:08

It's no fun camping in the rain especially since camping holidays are generally really outdoorsy

It's good to know when to quit and give something up as a bad job. Can you do something fun tomorrow as a 'holiday' at home?

A particular low point one camping trip was driving to a cinema about 49 miles away and choosing the longest film that was on to give us a chance to dry out and kill some time!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 09/08/2017 20:09

YABU to consider camping in the first place IMO Grin glad you came to your senses! Enjoy your warm home :)
