We have been camping since Tuesday. it has rained since Tuesday. everything is wet. My last pair of dry pant succumbed this afternoon, so we have packed up and come home.

It feels very defeatist, this is the first time we have given in early, but sitting at home with warm , dry pants, socks ( and outer garments!) feels wonderful.

We've been camping the last 5 years and it's rained every year.
3 years ago we admitted defeat and took our tent down in a thunderstorm, I literally couldn't get any wetter that year, it was fucking awful. Luckily I had family nearby and we went to stay with them.
We are going to crete this year as I really really need some proper sun!

temporarilyjerry · 09/08/2017 20:15

We were camping from Sunday but came home yesterday for the same reason so YANBU.
You'll be okay, Posie. It's going to be drier and brighter from today.

Andrewofgg · 09/08/2017 20:17

You'll know better next time. Sod camping.

missmapp · 09/08/2017 20:18

Thanks all. We didn't go far, so have the same weather at home- but heating and hot baths !
To all campers, the weather looks better for the end of the week, so I hope you have dry tents .

Nope. I have camped exactly once. Lasted two nights and gave in. It rained solidly for 24 hours, and the tent was absolutely full of daddy long legs because some twat DH left the door open.

I am on a Haven site at the moment, it's pissed it down all day but we have a lovely van with heating and the sun is meant to come out again tomorrow.

Enjoy your dry pants!

Bohemond · 09/08/2017 20:24

We lucked out. Went last Friday to Monday (nearly didn't due to forecast) but had a lovely sunny sat and sun. V pleased as was the first time camping with toddler in tow.

PiratePanda · 09/08/2017 20:25

I hear you. We're going camping on Monday, and while we have an Everest-worthy tent (literally), I am getting worried that it will be just miserable if it rains all the time.

Fortunately, lots of nice pubs with sea views for reading endless novels if it's really grim.

SukiTheDog · 09/08/2017 20:27

Yanbu. We did this a few years ago. We stayed 5 days out of 7. Ds was about 3 yrs old and we were just soaked. That last morning I woke and my heart sank as I heard the rain beating against the car (I'd slept with ds in the car as it was a full on storm). Ex and Inhad a huge row about it but I just felt enough was enough.

Am sat now, with the heat on and it's pissing down outside. Can't imagine camping in this!

HensAndRabbits · 09/08/2017 20:28

We were camping last week in constant rain. The highlight was listening to a family squelch past to the loo and hearing the dad bellow 'If anyone else complains they've got trench foot we're staying an extra day!'

We bailed for the first time and the tent is still drying.

madja · 09/08/2017 20:28

Nope. I did the same when I went for a 10 mile hike, and came back to find my airbed floating in 3 inches of water. No fun in that!

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 09/08/2017 20:28

Camping is shit. Why would you? Stay outdoors all day then get a cheap B&B. Cost the same as the amount of shite you have to buy to try to enjoy camping.

Only1scoop · 09/08/2017 20:30

Camping is hideous

Yanbu

I did 2 nights last week

AwfulSad

MrsGotobed · 09/08/2017 20:31

We camped for 2 nights last week and not only did it rain for 95% of the time the wind was horrendous.

Amazingly the tent survived, we survived and we actually had a good time Shock. It came close though!

thenightsky · 09/08/2017 20:33

Camping is for refugees. I refuse to leave a perfectly good house unless Trump is raining down missiles on me or Isis are murdering my neighbours.

(lighthearted)

Wotrewelookinat · 09/08/2017 20:34

We're seasoned campers and Never Give In but just had a very wet week in North Wales. I started the week with a mild cold, came home with laryngitis and a chest infection. We really wish we'd come home early!

RippleEffects · 09/08/2017 20:35

Don't forget to get the tent and equipment out and air/ dry wipe down in the next few days. The sum will come out at some point!

Love a mug of warm tea, my duvet and flushing toilets so not too early in my eyes.

deste · 09/08/2017 20:36

Myoubshould have come up to Scotland. We have had decent weather for a change.

Yogagirl123 · 09/08/2017 20:38

I have camped once, never, ever again, how anyone can enjoy camping I do not know.

BitOutOfPractice · 09/08/2017 20:38

Camping is for refugees Hmm Lighthearted or not that's really crass

My DD2 had to come home from camping with friends today with a throat infection. She was gutted.

PricklyBall · 09/08/2017 20:39

Nope, not unreasonable in the slightest. My last camping hol was the summer before last. It rained and rained, the campsite turned into the bog of eternal stench, despite the owner putting out heaps of sand, and we bailed out mid week.

Despite having a good tent and good kit, camping in the rain is shite.

Last summer we went to Italy and got an air bnb.

Benedikte2 · 09/08/2017 20:40

NUR but very sensible OP unless you were all set to compete in the Martyrs' Olympics.
Remember you are still on holiday and be sure not to get involved in all the usual home chores.
Good luck

honeyroar · 09/08/2017 20:42

I'm like AcrossThePond. We bought an old caravan because it rained for a week when we were going camping for a week! I'm the same, love the comfort, bathroom and warmth and never regret it when looking out at those suffering in tents when it's pouring.

It's your holiday, you're meant to enjoy it not endure it.

FallenPetalsSummerDew · 09/08/2017 20:42

I'm at home in bed reading this with electricity and WiFi, a bed and dryness when I should still be in a tent in a wet soggy field. We came home 3 days early after a very very very wet few days and some very 'disappointed so acting up' children. Knew we should have stayed at home when the campsite were warning people on the way in that there had been instances of snapped poles and ripped tents due to the gales! DH who is very much a 'won't happen to us, we can have our own mini weather pattern above the tent' persuaded us to carry on!

BitOutOfPractice · 09/08/2017 20:43

Nothing better than camping if the weather is good. Nothing worse if it's bad.

Bunnyfuller · 09/08/2017 20:44

Me and the DCs and puglet sre away for 3 days to Dorset 24-27 Aug. In a bell tent that's already erected. I'm praying for even ok cloud - certainly would've run home if it was like this. Remember giving up one year on the top of a bloody cliff after 3 similar days. Nothing better than camping in good weather, unbearable in bad!
