Btw, I've started reading Jared Diamond's "Collapse- how societies choose to fail or survive".
It may take a while with MN and all those late night show monologues about Trump.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 09/08/2017 08:29

lweji yes you're right - if I remember correctly, I think Reagan overhyped stars wars as they knew the ussr weren't anywhere near developing a similar defence system and it would put an end to mutually assured destruction as now the US could "stop" a missile but the ussr lacked the ability to do so. From what I remember, it was a major part of ending the arms race (with the ussr).

I think they never actually got around to developing it fully as the Cold War soon finished (except now we see that this probably was a one sided view and that Russia has been working against western democracy all this time).

But yes, having any icbms launched wouldn't be good and even if it could be stopped, that wouldn't be the end of the story and presumably it would just keep escalating.

Lweji · 09/08/2017 08:34

I think when the cold war ended, the people involved really wanted it to end. Gorbachev then Ieltsin.
But then came along Putin...

Travelledtheworld My copy arrived yesterday - I'm saving it for the weekend.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2017 08:44

Travelled I started reading that book last night. Page 3 disconcertingly was read at the same time as bbc were showing Trump's sabre rattling.

MicrowaveSpy · 09/08/2017 08:56

More info on NK. The sound quality is not great but it is quite informative.

I'll have to watch the rest of that later Microwave, looks interesting.
Trumps body language is fascinating when he talks about fire and fury. It's a very closed defensive position he takes. He also loses track of what he is saying and repeats himself.

MicrowaveSpy · 09/08/2017 09:26

I agree - I think Miller is deluded with regards to Trumps abilities. (& on many, many other ideas he has).

I saw that book in the airport but couldn't bring myself to spend the limited holiday time reading about a trumpesque figure although I still perused twitter and read about trump

Yes I think putin changed the direction of detente and the end of the Cold War, but never did I expect to see it culminate in the appointment of a narcissist who might start a "hot war" with another country.

It's strange to think of our children studying trump as a president and trying to parse his public statements. How do you ream them for subtleties and hints of policy etc when what he sends out can't even be understood in the most Simple of readings. And that's the one when he's using English words, albeit in a word salad, let alone when he throws things like "covfefe" around.

PerkingFaintly · 09/08/2017 10:07

Miller may be deluded about many things, but I don't for a moment imagine his ludicrous public praise of 45 is anything other than calculated toadying.

Travelledtheworld · 09/08/2017 10:21

The book has clearly been written as a holiday read.
But it's quite gripping.

Not JFs usual writing style.

It looks like a group of policemen were run over by a car in Paris. No dead, just injured.

Sorry!

Soldiers, not policemen, but on patrol

On whether there will be a NK-US war or not.

"But Kim Jong-un is going to push it as far as he can to get what he wants: recognition from the United States that North Korea is a nuclear power, and legitimacy at home as a ruler who can defend his people against the big, bad US."

"In some ways, Trump’s threats play into the North Korean calculus: Kim Jong-un wants his people to believe that the United States continues to threaten the very existence of North Korea."

"What I’m concerned about is a miscalculation or mishap that could force troops in the region to take military action."

BTW, one of the experts, Robert Kelly is the one of the viral children's video. Grin

Looking at the map on this article, I'm just on the border of potential NK missiles' range. London is within it. Shock

So, Hannity fails on grammar and time telling.

cozietoesie · 09/08/2017 12:59

My own belief is that the large majority of Americans want NK 'dealt with' and believe that 45 is 'nutty enough to do it'. Then.........if there's still something left..........they'll abandon him. His main job will be over as far as they're concerned. They'll be able then to indulge in luxuries such as morality.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 09/08/2017 13:00

You'd think mortality >>> morality for lost of them but perhaps not.
