Well, it's finally arrived. The moment I've not been waiting for.

I know 40's the new 30 and all that, but I can't really believe I'm 40. It sounds so grown up!

has anyone else feel weird about hitting the big 4 0?

I still feel about 20 in my head.

I've got a dodgy knee and a clicky ankle, which seem to have come on quite recently.

Is this a sign of things to come Grin

So AIBU to not be thrilled?

Happy birthday! I think all the fuss about turning 40 means we stop and assess how we feel about it, expecting to feel a certain something but actually I think it's a more positive age than it was, say, 20 years ago. Enjoy it, make the most of it, don't read too much in to ailments that you might well have had before but are noticing more now.
I haven't honestly felt thrilled about a birthday for years, and I'm 35.

donajimena · 05/08/2017 05:59

Happy birthday! You are a whole 5 years younger than me.
No I didn't feel weird at all but some of my friends did so I'm not dismissing your feelings, however I look and feel better in my forties than I ever did in my twenties or thirties. I'm probably in denial about the wrinkles but I know what style suits me and I'm a nicer and more confident person.
40 IS still young. Have a great day, I hope you have something nice planned.

MissionItsPossible · 05/08/2017 06:00

Happy birthday!! Have a wonderful day SmileSmileCakeGin

DonaldStott · 05/08/2017 06:03

Thank you. Yes going for a meal with family and friends then a party back at ours.

I am looking forward to it. New hair do. New outfit, lost 3 stone especially for this day, so it is gonna be a good'un. Just a bit of an odd feeling. But I know IABU for feeling odd, so I will just embrace the day Grin

Your feelings aren't unreasonable. You feel what you feel. In 10 years you'll laugh at those feelings, though!

But there is nothing wrong with you feeling them now 😊

marmaladeforme · 05/08/2017 06:17

Happy birthday. My special birthday is next week and yeah I feel weird about levelling up too.
It's like a whole new thing being 40 I think.
Well done on losing weight for it. I was attempting to but failed miserably. So I'll be fat and forty as oppose to fab.
You enjoy your day and let me know how you feel. I'm sure it's not as bad as we think!!

Chottie · 05/08/2017 06:25

Happy Birthday!! :)

40 is nothing, enjoy your birthday and all the ones yet to come.

TheStoic · 05/08/2017 06:31

Well you'll only get older from here Grin

I turned 40 this year and thought nothing of it, until I went for a check-up at the doctor and there was basically flashing lights and sirens as my age was flagged in the system. There's a whole raft of tests I should be doing now apparently. 😑

Amatree · 05/08/2017 06:38

Happy birthday and well done on your weight loss! Sounds like the kind of goal that loads of people talk about but never do anything to achieve so you should be proud!

Andrewofgg · 05/08/2017 07:57

Happy birthday - in another ten years you might be middle-aged.

You are not getting older. It's just longer since you were born.

Useranon123456 · 05/08/2017 08:04

WineHAPPY bIRTHDAY!!! 🍰🍺🍾🥂🌟

Groovee · 05/08/2017 08:06

x2boys · 05/08/2017 08:09

Happy birthday I,m 44 in a couple of months i was in a far better place when I turned 40 than when I turned 30 so it didn't bother me so much only six yrs till my 50 th erk

hickorydickorynurseryrhyme · 05/08/2017 08:10

Happy birthday! Look at it another way. You've made it to 40. Many people don't. More of life to live and love.

Heratnumber7 · 05/08/2017 08:11

Turning 50 is a lot worse Sad

IrritatedUser1960 · 05/08/2017 08:11

40 was the best year of my life. 50 is shit though, happy birthday Grin Flowers

TheMasterNotMargarita · 05/08/2017 08:12

I was 40 a few months ago.
I was delighted! I didn't have a big celebration but am trying to do something nice for myself every month or so.
Lunches with people I can't always see regularly and various activities I enjoy.

I feel very lucky to have reached 'middle age' in fairly good condition..I have experienced a lot of ill health/death in our close circle so embrace every year that passes. It sounds a bit trite but I try to value the time now as you never know what's round the corner (not to be harbinger of doom - it's just life). Yanbu to feel how you do but it is only a number.

Liskee · 05/08/2017 08:15

Happy Birthday! Did it myself a few weeks ago 😁 fairly painless in the end....though I still swear that I'm not actually 40 years old, for in my head I'm still about 27! Also congratulations on the weight loss...it's no mean feat to lose 3 stone so I for one will include a small round of applause alongside the birthday wishes!

Arsenicinthesugarbowl · 05/08/2017 08:15

Happy birthday. I turned 40 two months ago and had a great birthday!!! Got lots of lovely midlife crisis stuff planned for the year too. It's not so bad and I'm happier and in better shape than I was in my neurotic 20s!

EnormousDormouse · 05/08/2017 08:16

Happy Birthday!
And yes TheStoic - since 40 visits to the doctor have changed from being dismissed with 'oh it's nothing to worry about' to 'we'll just do a few tests to check that out'. Which is good really (thank you NHS) but a bit of a shock at the time.

ipswichwitch · 05/08/2017 08:19

I'm 40 in a few days and feel a bit weird about it. One one hand I love birthdays, always have, but on the other it seems so.. I dunno... grown up I think. I don't feel very grown up in my head!

I didn't want a big party, but like a pp I'm doing lots of smaller nice things - night out with DH, meeting friends, meal with family, etc.

ipswichwitch · 05/08/2017 08:21

Oh and happy birthday🍰
My brother always likes to helpfully point out that I'm as old as Star Wars! GrinHmm

Mum2OneTeen · 05/08/2017 08:23

Happy Birthday! 🍰🎂🍸 Hope you have a great day... the thought of forty is worse than the reality. Now fifty, that's different entirely... that's when (for me) body parts started to really complain & I needed glasses for driving as well as reading. And don't get me started on hot flushes... seriously though, each decade has its pluses and minuses. Just go with the flow... in some ways it's an enormous relief to move on from the insecurities of youth and embrace the calmer nature of being older (and hopefully wiser)

RochelleGoyle · 05/08/2017 08:34

Happy Birthday Donald. Cake Smile
I'm 37 and still feel like a kid a lot of the time. Cant imagine things will be radically different in three years either!
