To honk people who don't use their indicators?

Just that really.

I don't especially like driving but ever single day there's some twunt who suddenly turns without indicating, or just slows to a near halt before turning with no signals at all.

I've started honking them and occasionally shouting 'use your bloody indicators if I think they'll hear me

I'm being a dick aren't I?

Yanbu. They are selfish pricks.

userofthiswebsite · 01/08/2017 16:09

Try being a pedestrian and suddenly a car's coming towards you and you've got half a second to get yourself out the way...

A lot of drivers really don't seem to care that lazy driving puts people walking at risk.

Fruitcocktail6 · 01/08/2017 16:13

YANBU. I started driving a few months ago and am shocked by how many people don't bother indicating. It's so freaking annoying at turnings or roundabouts when you could've gone if only the other person had been indicating.

Moanyoldcow · 01/08/2017 16:13

Thank you both. I detest lazy driving so much. I try to always drive safely but it's unbelievable how many people seem not to give a shit.

Yabu. Rule 112 of the Highway code. Just mind your own driving, keep a safe stopping distance behind and you shouldn't come to any bother.

Moanyoldcow · 01/08/2017 16:14

Thanks fruit.

I'm being a dick aren't I?

yup!

there are times when using an indicator could confuse e.g. overtaking a parked car with a nearby side road - if you indicate then are you passing the car or turning right? a driver should use car positioning as the main form of indication with indicators for clarity when helpful...

the highway code does not require indicators to be used, and even when an indication is required there are a number of alternatives from hand signals to indicators, road positioning to a verbal indication.

so, yes they might be wrong, but they might be right, we can't tell on a forum... but any time you use the horn that way you are breaking the law, so you are wrong every time!

onlyconnect · 01/08/2017 16:15

YANBU. I sometimes do a flashing sign at them by opening and closing my hand. I would love to get the chance to kindly point out to one of them that their indicator light isn't working.

ChelleDawg2020 · 01/08/2017 16:18

YANBU to feel that way, but be careful about honking as if the police were to witness it they would be more likely to fine you than the other driver. You can only sound your horn to warn other drivers of your presence, not to highlight their atrocious driving habits.

Highway Code rule 112:
^Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively. You MUST NOT use your horn

while stationary on the road
when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am

except when another road user poses a danger.^

But yes, there are a lot of idiots out there.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 01/08/2017 16:18

Rule number one of driving; treat everyone else on the road as a twat and if they are not you can be pleasantly surprised. YABU, one honk from you is not going to make them change their ways, if they are stupid enough to not indicate when there are other road users about then they are too stupid to realise you are honking at them.

Moanyoldcow · 01/08/2017 16:21

I'm a twat. I can take it. Thanks all.

chipscheeseandcurrysauce · 01/08/2017 16:24

Or when you're a pedestrian waiting to cross the road at the junction... and the driver turns left/right. Like how I meant to know which way you are going?

This actually happened: a driver indicated with her HAND... what's wrong with your indicators?

ThePinkOcelot · 01/08/2017 16:24

YANBU. It drives me mad, especially when they don't bother indicating and you could have pulled out! Arses!!

gnushoes · 01/08/2017 16:29

There seems to be a school of thought now that indicators are for the little people. Drives me mad. People who don't indicate are also often poor at road positioning. I am not clairvoyant, SIGNAL!

StormTreader · 01/08/2017 16:29

The rage from a car turning into a side road with no indicators, almost running me over, and then raging at ME for having the cheek to cross the road THEY were intending to drive on.
If only there was some way for them to INDICATE to pedestrians what they were planning to do!

Tanfastic · 01/08/2017 16:29

You are not a twat but maybe a bit over exuberant with the honking 😂.

Just mouth "tosser" instead like I do.

FatBottomedGal · 01/08/2017 16:29

I get very wound up by my DM as she never indicates when pulling out of a road ("the position of my car shows people which way I'm turning" Hmm) BUT also find it very annoying when people indicate around parked cars - I would assume they're not just going to drive into the back of them?

Need20yearsofsleep · 01/08/2017 16:34

YANBU I beep at them then (sign language) Wink generally signalling they're idiots and I'm not a mind reader Hmm

Moanyoldcow · 01/08/2017 16:49

Pinkocelot - that one usually sees actual steam coming out of my ears!

AwaywiththePixies27 · 01/08/2017 16:57

YNBU. They're selfish dicks who expect everyone else to have the telepathic ability to know which way they plan on going.

Mia1415 · 01/08/2017 17:03

YANBU. I shout, use rude words and occasionally hand gestures. Then I realise that my 4 year old is sitting behind me and feel terrible.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 01/08/2017 17:04

except when another road user poses a danger

So OP is well within their rights then.

RockyBird · 01/08/2017 17:04

Yabu

MTB133 · 01/08/2017 17:16

You need to be really carefully beeping people on the road because it is easy to think that everyone is very rational and will accept it and think "oh well it is my own fault for not indicating"

Some people are very aggressive and I no longer beep anyone as I found this out once and it was a very scary incident where I was nearly driven off the road for this.

wrenika · 01/08/2017 17:28

I hate honkers! I think that if you have time to honk your horn at someone, you've got time to calmly stop/manoeuvre/negotiate whatever is bothering you. There are very few scenarios where honking is required. We all make mistakes - and it could be the one time that person does it! They could be a perfect driver every other second. I've driven over 10 years without any accidents, incidents, infractions, or otherwise - but I've still had the odd moment where I've realised I forgot to indicate. Usually on a road I'm dead familiar with and I'm on autopilot - which isn't good, and it is a reminder that I'm not paying adequate attention, but I would object to a honker honking at me. Unless they want to show me their perfectly clean slate of driving experience!
