Is Jay Rayner right about Brexit? Is Britain just ‘nine meals from anarchy’.

Two articles here. Further down is the article in the printed edition of the Observer today (can't find digital edition)

"A few years ago, when discussing food security in the UK, Lord Cameron of Dillington – a farmer and first head of the Countryside Agency – said Britain was just ‘nine meals from anarchy’. It would take just three days of empty supermarket shelves, just three days of meals missed by hungry children and despairing parents, for the country to descend into massive civil unrest.

When I first heard that statement I regarded it as an interesting and diverting piece of hyperbole. Now it feels to me like a prediction."

It's a very interesting article

Purits, you think all remainers and all who worry about food supplies are 'lefties'?

Why is that?

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 31/07/2017 17:07

Have you watched Blackout?

ContinuingPrim · 31/07/2017 17:13

Not just food. We are never many days away from fuel shortages either.

makeourfuture · 31/07/2017 17:22

I'm going to buy loads of baked beans tomorrow just in case

The problem, though, quickly becomes one of violence. Someone may know you have the beans.

ForalltheSaints · 31/07/2017 18:11

Thanks to the OP for the very interesting article posted.

I'm not sure I would want to have a discussion with Michael Gove either.

Purits, you think all remainers and all who worry about food supplies are 'lefties'?

Where did you get that from? I quoted three examples of Leftie hysterical hyperbole. You have then gone on to extrapolate your own conjecture from there.

'Leftie person makes comment about xyz' does not mean that 'all people who comment about xyz are Lefties'. I hope that the rest of your political analysis is a bit sharper than that.Hmm

histinyhandsarefrozen · 01/08/2017 08:48

Oh I see, you can extrapolate wildly: "lefties get a buzz from catastrophising" but no one else should.

squishysquirmy · 01/08/2017 08:57

I do think that the carbon footprint of food miles is over estimated by much of the public. Yes, it is often much better to grow our own (and importing from NZ and China seems crazy), but long life products imported on large ships with masses of other goods don't use that much energy to transport. Flowers etc transported by plane do.

There are some foods that would take more energy to grow in the UK (heated greenhouses etc) than in a country with a more suitable climate, even when you take transport into account.

I love growing my own, but do most of it in large pots on a patio, filled with compost bought from a supermarket. I don't kid myself that this is the most environmentally friendly way to produce food because it isn't.

Definitely prefer British he lamb and not NZ, difficult to be fobbed off when it has come from your own farm

Tanith · 01/08/2017 18:08

Purits actually, your first quote was made by Lord Cameron of Dillington, as clearly stated in the OP - hardly hysterical and certainly not a "Leftie".

Jay Rayner's article is well-reasoned and sourced. Did you even bother to read it?

Mrskeats · 01/08/2017 18:11

Excellent article from him as usual

RiversDisguise · 02/08/2017 22:56

Ha ha, Five. If I ever have a spare $3 million NZ floating around, I'll buy my mate's sheep farm and answer your wholly believable claim in kind. Wink

Imbeingunreasonable · 02/08/2017 23:52

😳 what a well reasoned article. A lot of what Jay comments on has been bubbling way before Brexit though. I think Brexit could make things a lot worse for various reasons but you can't say that without being labelled a remoaner.

Purits - you're argument was utter shit
