Wine?

I love a glass or two of red wine of an evening, I absolutely can go without and have on many occasions and I also make sure to have one or two alcohol free days off per week. I'm trying to cut down due to calories & health but it really is my guilty pleasure! I, for the most part, eat healthy, am active nearly every day, don't smoke or take drugs and work my bloomin' butt off, but AIBU? According to UK guidelines I am but in the normal, busy world?

I should say, I saw a post on Netmum's that sparked this thread....

Well at one point I was necking two bottles a day. I now only drink at weekends and only a bottle max. So your one or two glasses sounds perfectly fine to me. Crack on.

Wolfiefan · 29/07/2017 23:38

Depends on whether it is just one day off and the size of the glasses. My wine glasses are massive. Two glasses would be about 6 units. That most nights would be bad.
One small glass 5 nights a week not the same!
And I don't think alcohol should ever be a habit. Almost every night? That's not good.

Patriciathestripper1 · 29/07/2017 23:38

I have read it's better to have two or three glasses a night every night then to bindge on it once or twice a week.....
so I have upped my intake to every night 😄

Yukbuck · 29/07/2017 23:39

People will tell you YABU but honestly I think it's so common. I don't personally do it but some weeks I may have a fruity cider 4 nights in a row and then nothing for 2 weeks.

Wolfiefan · 29/07/2017 23:39

Two bottles a day? Bloody hell.
A bottle over the weekend or a bottle a night. A bottle is about 9 units so a major binge (even if less than you used to drink.)

YouTheCat · 29/07/2017 23:39

Do you feel okay? Are you groggy the next day?

I think, so long as you're not binging and have a few dry days, that'd be fine.

If it makes you feel crap, then stop.

NormaDesmondsEyebrows · 29/07/2017 23:40

Wolfie, a bottle over the weekend.

Wolfiefan · 29/07/2017 23:41

Bad advice You. If you drink more then your tolerance will increase. You may not feel like shit but can still harm your body.

Wolfiefan · 29/07/2017 23:41

Phew Norma!
Grin
I was imagining a bottle Friday, one Saturday and a last on Sunday! Shock

YouTheCat · 29/07/2017 23:44

I didn't mean you have to drink until you feel shit the next day. I meant 'do you?' because that's a bad thing.

My tolerance for alcohol has diminished over the last few years. If I exceed 5 or 6 units in one go, then I feel shit the next day - not hungover as such but a bit sluggish and crap. I try to keep it to about 4/5 units a twice a week.

beebee7 · 29/07/2017 23:45

Drinking 2 bottles of wine a day is pretty much binge drinking, and will not do anyone any good. No matter how much they tell themselves 'it does no harm.'

I am three parts pissed on half a bottle. I only have a couple of glasses once every couple of weeks, and I could go a year without booze if I had to. (Not being smug, just saying how it is for me.)

Drinking in moderation is fine, having it every single night isn't good imo, (even if it's one glass of wine,) and drinking 2 bottles of wine a day is ridiculous!

YouTheCat · 29/07/2017 23:47

But the OP isn't having 2 bottles a day. Confused

Wolfiefan · 29/07/2017 23:48

But the implication is that you're alright as long as you don't have a horrid hangover the next day. I often see people on here saying it's ok as they don't feel drunk/don't get hangovers. Whereas in reality it's alarming that their tolerance has increase.
I think the ideal is supposed to be a couple of units no more than 4 times a week. NHS guidelines. I'm not sure I stick to that as I don't measure my wine!

YouTheCat · 29/07/2017 23:52

Well, my tolerance has decreased or maybe I just can't be arsed with feeling crap for half a day any more. I don't know. I didn't say 'it's okay so long as you don't feel shit the next day'. Having been married to an alcoholic who never had hangovers I know that's bollocks.

It doesn't sound like the OP is binge drinking. She sounds quite sensible really.

Wolfiefan · 29/07/2017 23:54

It doesn't have to be a binge though. Drinking more nights than not isn't healthy.
My tolerance has massively decreased. I went out to the pub for a very rare night out. 1 and 1/2 pints and I could cheerfully have staggered to the nearest kebab van. I'm old!

YouTheCat · 29/07/2017 23:57

True. Maybe the OP needs to increase her booze free days?

I don't tend to drink at all Monday to Thursday, unless it's a special occasion. I don't always have a drink on Sunday. Not drinking doesn't bother me.

cakeisawesome · 30/07/2017 00:05

Just for the record I don't drink two bottles a day Confused I don't think I could stomach it Blush

I'm just a very busy lady, studying, working, training excetra and it's my way to 'unwind'. I don't set out to get drunk, can't stand feeling like that, I just like to relax after a busy day when DD is in bed. DH is pretty much a stay at home dad and drives and rarely drinks so DD is in no danger. It just helps me unwind. Maybe I need to re-think my days off then?!

In regards to hangovers etc, no I don't get any neither does it interfere with my daily life.... I'm not worried in the sense of drinking to much and addiction, just for my health and wondering if others do the same?

Glad to see however I'm not the only one!

A bottle of wine a night. Sometimes number 2 gets opened.

LucyLugosi · 24/08/2017 16:27

I was drinking every night (2/3 large glasses) and really wanted to cut down but felt so stressed all the time that I found it nearly impossible!

The only thing that stopped me was falling pregnant, and I haven't had any alcohol since I found out a few days after my period didn't start properly.

Obviously this method is pretty extreme! What DP had found useful in massively cutting down is replacing the alcohol ritual with a different one, so he is having fancy teas in the evening. Could you swap wine for something, queenie?

I had some sparkling flavoured stuff in a wine glass the other day and it felt so nice. Even just drinking out of a wine glass felt lovely!

RhubardGin · 24/08/2017 16:27

A glass of wine or two a night is completely fine and in my circle of friends fairly common.

But be warned, you'll have posters on here soon telling you that you're an alcoholic!

LucyLugosi · 24/08/2017 16:27

Sorry queenofexcuses not queenie

BusterGonad · 24/08/2017 16:32

I'm often amazed at the amount people drink on a daily basis! I was wonder if the responses would be different if the Op was drinking something les classy like Special Brew every night?
