To be pissed off with nits?!

I have lost count of the amount of times I've had to de nit DS1 hair. He has asd and hates things being touched so to de nit is a big ordeal for him and me
I understand at this age (4) they have it a lot but never thought I'd have to treat his hair weekly basically!
Anyone any tips? The treatment is so expensive, he is asthmatic so can only used certain types

Sack the lotion stuff off. It's crap and generally doesn't work! Use conditioner and a nitty gritty comb every day for a week then a couple of times the next week to be on the safe side. I put a few drops of tea tree oil in the conditioner to repel them, it's a good idea to keep doing that even when they've gone to keep them away (put it in shampoo if you don't usually use conditioner).

Super drug have some lice repellent shampoo, it's in a bright green bottle. Touch wood, DD has been clear since we started using it.

I was combing her hair every night, she was bribed with YouTube videos. Such a nightmare, she wouldn't sit still long enough for me to be fully satisfied I had done a thorough job!

Ds has never had them. Dd has had them only twice and she is 13. Are you sure you are getting rid of them in the first place? You could use the conditioner /combing route as that's not expensive but you would need to repeat every few days for 3 weeks to break the life cycle. What treatments are you using and are you repeating it after 2 weeks plus combing up until the 3rd week?

We use voseen shampoo with lice repealiant it in on DS...may be fluke but he is just finishing year 1 and despite all his friends having nits a number of times he (so far) has escaped it.

We use the voseen spray leave in conditioner and so far my 3yr old hasn't had them even though they've done the rounds of nursery many, many, many times.

It has citronella oil in so a bit of a strong smell but worth it if it works.

Ditto nitty gritty and conditioner. My DD (now 15) had them almost constantly in primary school. She would only ever be clear of them in the holidays, 2 days of new term she would be crawling with them again 😡

Don't understand why people keep recommending tea tree oil. It's really harsh and doesn't work as a repellent. Condition and comb, condition and comb, condition and comb ... repeat repeat repeat

Keep repeating at each hair wash.

I've gone back to using the Vosene lice repellant shampoo and the leave in spray as my girls never had an issue whilst we used it but I switched them over to what I use and suddenly I'm battling a nit war.
The leave in spray is very strong smelling but it works!

Im with you there. Since May I've de-nitted my DCs 4 times and I need to do it again. I did a quick go on Sunday during bath-time, but am doing it properly this weekend once they have left school (to be honest dont see the point if they are just going to catch them again despite numerous texts and messages in the school newsletter asking parents to get it sorted)

I also use the conditioner with nitty gritty comb treatment too.

That vosene stuff stinks and hasn't worked with my lot. Im going to try tea tree next.

Another trick I heard was hairspray, but Im not sure that I like the idea of putting that in my DDs being such a young age (9 and 5)

As a preventative could you get some leave in conditioner? They'll find it harder to grab on the fuckers and it'll be easier for you to comb every day. I agree that the lotion is a load of bull.
Tea tree oil is good too.

After a winter of treating and treating and treating, I ended up getting my boys' heads practically shaved. They looked awful but the bloody nits were gone.

I've found dd catches fewer if we keep her hair tied back - someone in her class isn't doing their kids because any day she has it down, big ones are in her hair again. Bloody things...

Keep the hair as short as possible or tied back.

He has short hair but think I'll shave it or have short, back & sides

DS got a grade 1 cut as it was less painful than trying to keep him still whilst we combed. Worked a treat as there is no where for them to hide.

No need to use chemicals. They often don't work.
Lice can hold their breath for up to ten minutes. Cover the head in lots and lots of conditioner, put a shower cap on and leave for at least 15 minutes. Then comb thoroughly with a metal nit comb This will smother the lice but not the eggs so repeat everyday for 2 weeks to catch the baby lice as they hatch, they don't develop into egg layers for a few days.
But unless the whole school is doing this he will just keep getting reinfected.

You can buy cheap tea tree conditioner from the coop, this works the best.

Agree with most of the above.
Slather on conditioner of any flavour. Let it sit for a while and then comb through in all directions.
We've found the plastic combs easier on the head than the nitty gritty and work just as well.
Bottle of conditioner £1 two plastic combs 99p and no nasty silicone greasiness or insecticide.

Very short hair definitely helps.

Shave the head. Gone. My daughter is under threat that if she comes home with them again, that will be her fate. Who on earth wants to spend hours at a time for two weeks going through hair again and again and again.....

Yep! It really is as simple as that. Make it part of the bath time routine. A few minutes every day to ensure your kids never get nits and no chemicals involved. I did it for years - it was second nature to my kids like brushing their teeth, and once I started they never got nits again.

I feel your pain! I am constantly waging war on them. Conditioner and a good nit comb every bloomin' day. Wash towels and bedding especially pillowcases on a hot wash. Can't use any of the products on my two as come up in terrible allergic rash. I get rid of them and then they get reinfected at school. At the stage where I am thinking shaved haircuts all round including me.
