Am I being disgusting? Litter tray cleaning!

QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2017 12:27

My friend and I both have cats. She uses half a bag of litter per day and empties completely every morning. (so all the litter is dumped and completely new litter added.)

I put a good amount of litter in about once a week and then scoop/top up as needed.

She thinks I'm disgusting and it's unhygienic. I think she's being really wasteful.

Who's right? 😂

I guess there's no wrong or right but personally when my cats had a litter tray I did what you did.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 12/07/2017 12:30

You. What a waste. I buy a more expensive litter that keeps on the smell and scoop daily. I probably only do a complete change once every 3-4 weeks.

You are right Smile. Even my fastidious mum would only fully empty the tray once a week (for one cat).

problembottom · 12/07/2017 12:32

That sounds very excessive. I scoop first and last thing every day and do a full change incl a tray clean about once a week.

Justhadmyhaircut · 12/07/2017 12:34

However often I change it our dcats still prefer peeing down the bath plughole. .
Or the disused bidet!!

Argeles · 12/07/2017 12:35

We use Catsan litter, and we take out any stools on a daily basis if necessary.

If left to me, I only change the litter once a week, but my DH changes it twice a week. We have one cat.

SpringySprung · 12/07/2017 12:35

You're right. I scoop the poop as soon as i can after it happens and change the litter and clean everything twice a week roughly, in this weather maybe 3 times a week but i use as little litter as possible! I'm not made of money. We have 2 cats.

HipsterHunter · 12/07/2017 12:37

Massive waste.

Buy good quality clumping litter and you scoop clumps 2 or 3 times a day.

The base litter can last for 3 or 4 weeks (packet says 6 but I've never got it that long and find it needs a change after 3 or 4)

Amee1992x · 12/07/2017 12:37

Change it about every 5 days, scoop morning and night x

MargaretCavendish · 12/07/2017 12:37

If you look at the instructions on the bag itself, it tells you to do what you do, not what she does - and cat litter manufacturers have every reason to encourage excessive use! We used to do a full change of ours every weekend, including pouring boiling water in to disinfect. I have to say that routine has broken down a little since we got a second cat and so now have three rather than one litter tray, though...

QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2017 12:37

Thanks! I just can't get my head around tipping perfectly good litter away for no reason.

I use a clumping litter so pee and poo is removed. Can probably get a couple of weeks from the litter tray. Catsan was very smelly when I used it so I tried a few before settling on the corn cat litter I currently use

JennyOnAPlate · 12/07/2017 12:41

I do the same as you. Generally in our house, thoroughly clean tray = cat pissing on the floor Hmm

Nikephorus · 12/07/2017 12:44

Poo removed, full change once a week (maybe more in winter when it's being used more often). Two cats using it.

QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2017 12:46

I use the cheap stuff from Lidl. It's very fine and my fussy cat really likes it

FatCatFaces · 12/07/2017 12:57

I'm using a new one at the moment. It's these funny little pellet things which seem to to turn wee into sawdust. The base lasts around 3 weeks in a 2 cat household. Lumps and clumps are removed daily and I top up as necessary.

I prefer it to clay as it doesn't get stuck to the bottom of the tray...

I assume your friend is using non clumping litter and has too much time on her hands. Must cost a fortune.

QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2017 13:00

I've used wood in the past but my current cat hates it!

WinnieTheMe · 12/07/2017 13:03

I'm the same. Scoop twice a day, full change once a week. I'd be bankrupt buying cat litter otherwise!

Dizzywhore · 12/07/2017 13:04

Sorry but I change mine everyday too! Clean it out in the morning then a thin ish layer of litter other wise I think it smells and I would want my cats walking in it then spreading the germs from their feet all round the house!

Dizzywhore · 12/07/2017 13:04

*wouldn't

FatCatFaces · 12/07/2017 13:06

Thankfully mine are pretty easy going about litter (although none of us like that horrible silica stuff). They're fussy about everything else, of course.

StumpyScot92 · 12/07/2017 13:09

I have a cat, we do a full clean every week and fill with a deep amount of catsan. Every morning we (well, I'm pregnant so OH) remove her poop and any other bits and bin them.

It only smells immediately after she does a poo for a few minutes (the same way the loo can smell after a person has used it). No way would I be going through half a bag of litter a day!

ItchyFoot · 12/07/2017 13:12

I do it your way. Although I tried it your friends way for a while but no matter what I do my dick head cats shit in front of the litter trays instead of in them. I swear no more indoor cats!

Iris65 · 12/07/2017 13:13

I think that you are right. I do it your way too.
