Am I being disgusting? Litter tray cleaning!

QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2017 12:27

My friend and I both have cats. She uses half a bag of litter per day and empties completely every morning. (so all the litter is dumped and completely new litter added.)

I put a good amount of litter in about once a week and then scoop/top up as needed.

She thinks I'm disgusting and it's unhygienic. I think she's being really wasteful.

Who's right? 😂

We have the wood pellet type. Clean litter tray out completely once a week. Our cat is a house cat so all her waste is done there. She comes to tell you she has pooed ( Yes even in the middle of the night 🌙 ! ) That is removed immediately and flushed down the loo. Then about twice a day the wee/ sawdust clumps are removed and binned and litter is topped up when needed.

9GreenBottles · 12/07/2017 13:23

I'm like you, but with my last cat, once she was a teenager, her urine used to stink so I cleaned the tray at least twice a day - but I only used a tiny amount of litter each time (and she also had a spare completely empty tray she could, and would, use).

kali110 · 12/07/2017 13:27

We remove poo strsight away unless its during the night bytthey get a fresh one every night.
Hate the thought of them sitting on dirty litter.

MorbidBibliomancy · 12/07/2017 13:30

Slightly different as we have rabbits, but they do have an open litter tray. During the week we scoop out the obviously dirty bits, then do a full refresh on weekends. Emptying the whole thing every day seems a bit wasteful. Also, I'm unsure whether it's the same for cats but we were advised that if we're constantly refreshing the rabbits' tray they might take it as a sign that they're not meant to do their business there.

NotAPuffin · 12/07/2017 13:42

We scoop lumps daily (or when it's stinky!) and change completely every week, on bin day.

And by 'we', I mean DH.

Penfold007 · 12/07/2017 14:02

What litter are posters using that only needs to be changed every 3-4 weeks? I think I need to get some.

BaDumShh · 12/07/2017 14:06

Poops removed and litter freshener powder mixed in daily, and a full empty, clean and replace once a week.

Incitatis · 12/07/2017 14:06

I have three cats and change the litter completely each day. I use Tesco own brand and get through two bags a week. £1.70 a bag plus litter liners.

BewareTheUndertoad · 12/07/2017 14:13

i use a good clumping (non clay) litter and remove the lumps daily. I top it up when it gets low unless it is at the stage where bits have dropped off the clumps and it needs a change.

I change it when it needs it rather than by a calendar as we have 2 trays and usage varies at any given time.

Some litters are not great but I still wouldn't change a usable tray unless there had been a runny bum incident. It also depends how much litter you use, about 2" deep is normal here.

BewareTheUndertoad · 12/07/2017 14:17

Penfold, some of the silica litters say you can change 4 weekly, however they do turn a nasty shade of yellow/brown and have to be stirred up a lot. I could never make them last that long.

I use OKO Cats Best at the moment and it isn't as good as it used to be so that won't last as long without top ups now. I only bought it because my usual was out of stock. Greenwoods is better.

However I usually buy the Nature Gold pellets, also OKO and that does last longer. I often scoop the clean stuff into a fresh tray and top up, then chuck out the stuff that isn't viable, saves a fair bit of litter but only really works with the pellets.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 12/07/2017 14:19

presumably this depends on the frequency of your cat's output?

cat-before-last would only go in the tray, and so it needed a full clean out every 2-3 days to avoid it smelling (IMVHO if it smells you've left it too late). current cat always goes outside unless it's raining, so if the weather is in sync with her bladder we can go weeks without changing it. we use the wood pellets.

dementedpixie · 12/07/2017 14:22

I'm using a mixture of Worlds best (was 40% off on zooplus) and super benek corn litter. They are both clumping litters so the litter doesn't need cleaning out as often

dementedpixie · 12/07/2017 14:22

And i have 2 cats that only use the tray even when they have access to outside

Penfold007 · 12/07/2017 14:30

Thanks for the tips :)

caffeinestream · 12/07/2017 14:51

We have two cats and use wood pellets - we get it for free through OH's job so doesn't cost us a penny.

We scoop whenever we see poop - normally morning, after work and if they use again between then and bedtime. Trays get changed after 3-4 days as the Maine Coon seems to do colossal pees that destroy the litter before too long!

Coffeeisnecessary · 12/07/2017 14:56

I use a silica based one and often can leave it 4 weeks (one cat) we don't stir it and the wee seems to sink down and not smell, I find that when you stir it it does stink, scoop poo out as soon as possible. Often on offer at wilko!

BewareTheUndertoad · 12/07/2017 17:10

I used to get the silica litter but it can make a lot of dust and if inhaled it isn't good for the cat. I used to sieve it very carefully and there was a lot of dust and powder left over. (I had my reasons for this - tray was in a crate and cat would sleep with his head resting on the end and inhale it).

For normal use in a covered tray it isn't too bad but prefer the clumping pellets as they roll away rather than being tracked all over the house.

ghostyslovesheets · 12/07/2017 17:13

I used to empty every other day and clean daily (5 cats) but I discovered the magic MN litter and now I only take out clumps - no idea when I'll change it as there is NO smell and I now have to check for poo rather then smell it first

lalalalyra · 12/07/2017 17:14

How many cats does she have?

I had to do it daily with my last cats as despite having several boxes the three of them insisted on using the same one. They'd also be outside all day, but cry to get in to use the box. So they'd come in, shit in the box and then go back out again.

Current cats don't use it half as much so I do the same as you.

Crunchymum · 12/07/2017 17:16

I clean properly once a week, scoop out every few days and top up if need be. I do use about half a bag of litter when I change completely though.

I used to change it twice a week, then I stopped doing it as frequently as I had a newborn - cat didn't object so I just carried on with once a week.

metalmum15 · 12/07/2017 17:21

That's such a waste. I take out any crap as soon as, then change it around every 3 days. I have 2 cats and it starts to smell too strongly of urine if it's left any longer.

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/07/2017 18:06

I'm a scoop but rarely fully change person - we use the tigerino baby powder which is super clumping so even the pee gets fully removed with scooping. It also works better with a thicker layer.

I also have Maine Coons - to the poster upthread who mentioned the monster pees, I hear you! This stuff works really well for those.

thegreylady · 12/07/2017 18:10

I use Catsan clumping. I have three indoor cats and four litter trays. I scoop and top up daily and do complete change and disinfect trays one a month. I use a litter locker too and there is no smell.

bertsdinner · 12/07/2017 18:17

I clean/change every time my cat uses his tray. He seems to get piss everywhere and the litter smells. I dont think it's disgusting to change it less, I'd do the same but it just doesn't seem to work for me, I think my cat is a messy toileter.

QuestionableMouse · 12/07/2017 18:34

We both have two cats. Both of hers go outside, while only one of mine does.
