Friend says you should never wear a full length dress to a wedding as it competes with the bride and you will be mistaken for a bridesmaid!

I had never heard this rule.

I think it's lovely. It doesn't look 'bridesmaidy' at all

IceCreamIScream · 09/07/2017 08:35

Your friend is bonkers.
Dress is lovely.

TheStoic · 09/07/2017 08:36

Do you know what colour the bridesmaids will wear?

Chillyegg · 09/07/2017 08:36

Its lovely. Definitely appropriate.

embo1 · 09/07/2017 08:37

It's lovely and perfect for a wedding guest. If it was plain and the colour of the bridesmaids dresses, then I might go with something else, but it's patterned.

Nessalina · 09/07/2017 08:37

It's lovely, but if the bridesmaids are in unmatched grey dresses you will look the part - that's a long shot though! Do you know the colour scheme from the invite?

sallyhenderson · 09/07/2017 08:38

No idea what colour the bridesmaids will be

Find out what colour the bridesmaids are wearing. I know someone getting married in a feee weeks and their bridesmaids dresses are grey!

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 09/07/2017 08:39

You are allowed to ask!

kittybiscuits · 09/07/2017 08:40

It's lovely and definitely suitable.

SparklyMagpie · 09/07/2017 08:41

That dress is beautiful OP

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 09/07/2017 08:41

I think it's lovely. Never heard the no long dresses rule (as long as it's not white I think you're ok)

If in doubt ask for the colour scheme so you don't clash. But I honestly think it's lovely

Mulberry72 · 09/07/2017 08:43

It's lovely, I'm wearing something very similar for my nieces wedding.

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 09/07/2017 08:44

Lovely dress

Has anyone here bought anything from silkfred before? Seen a few ads with their stuff now

Wondered if any good?

Hadjab · 09/07/2017 08:46

It's perfect - wear it.

I've never understood that whole competing with/upstaging the bride/bridesmaids thing. You'd have to be ridiculously overdressed in order to do so, or the bride hasn't put in enough effort...

LeannePerrins · 09/07/2017 08:46

Lovely dress. Absolutely nothing wrong with a full-length dress at a wedding as long as it isn't white.

treaclesoda · 09/07/2017 08:52

I don't think it looks bridesmaid-y at all, it looks fine for a wedding.

Asking about the colour of the bridesmaids dresses could be tricky. Colour scheme has been top secret at every wedding I've ever been to. Asking about colours in advance would be viewed very negatively.

dudsville · 09/07/2017 08:53

That's so pretty! I'd worry that it wouldn't stay closed on me but it's beautiful!

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 09/07/2017 08:54

Oooh I'd never heard about colour schemes being secret. In that case maybe say to the bride you're thinking of a grey dress...is that ok. Then she can keep her secret colour scheme
(I really don't think you have anything to worry about op!)

TheDowagerCuntess · 09/07/2017 08:57

Lovely dress - ideal for a guest at a wedding.

Silvercatowner · 09/07/2017 08:58

Colour scheme has been top secret at every wedding I've ever been to

This is one of the (many) reasons I dislike the whole wedding process.

OP it's a gorgeous dress - wear it!

Mollie85 · 09/07/2017 08:58

Went to a wedding on Friday and easily 40% of the women were wearing maxis (inc. me). Bridesmaids had knee length dresses and bride was in mermaid shaped lace.

Sometimes you get a "hint" of the colour scheme with the invites? I think youll be fine

LazyDailyMailJournos · 09/07/2017 09:02

I think it's lovely and your friend is bonkers. All this 'compete with the bride' stuff is nonsense - unless you were planning to turn up in a wedding dress? Or head to toe in funereal black, garbed with veil and lace hanky to complement your wailing and theatrical sighs?!

I've seen a few ads for Silkfred now as well. Might keep an eye on it - let us know what the dress looks and feels like IRL Grin

^This. I

f you're keeping your colour scheme 'top secret' then you can't get upset when a load of your guests turn up wearing that colour. Some weddings these days are bloody batshit.

TheStoic · 09/07/2017 09:08

It's a running joke in my family that I always turn up in a dress the same colour as the bridesmaids. Blush

Twice it's happened. And I was very young!

So yes, I always ask now. Nobody has ever been remotely upset about answering. Probably because they know me...
