12 year old DD wants second ear piercing?

user1497545304 · 04/07/2017 19:40

DD has been asking for ages now. She has almost finished year 7, so is nearly 13. I think she's too young, and don't want her to look chavvy Wink but she's getting so upset, calling me 'overprotective' etc. I don't know. Do you think it's too young? AIBU?
Currently not sure what to do about it. Confused

I had 3 holes in my ears and my belly button pierced by age 14.

I'd let her. They're only tiny holes Grin

ThePinkOcelot · 04/07/2017 19:45

What is the difference between 1 and 2?! My dd is 12 and has hers done twice, I think it looks nice.

Pickerel · 04/07/2017 19:46

There's no right or wrong answer to this really.

Glumglowworm · 04/07/2017 19:47

It's her ears, its inoffensive, you've let her have one hole, why is 2 so much worse?

Whitelisbon · 04/07/2017 19:49

Let her op. At least then she's having it done properly, where it'll be safe and sterile, and not doing it in the toilets at school with her mates not looking at anyone in particular, dd1

Aquamarine1029 · 04/07/2017 19:49

I think 2 holes is ok for a 13 year old, but you're the mum so you need to feel alright about it. Maybe wait until she's officially 13?

ALemonyPea · 04/07/2017 19:50

Let her do it, I had my 2nd holes done around the same age

AdalindSchade · 04/07/2017 19:50

Why not? Because you don't like how it looks? That's a shit reason

AdalindSchade · 04/07/2017 19:50

I did mine myself with a pin at her age Grin

BunnyBardot · 04/07/2017 19:51

2 holes look so different to just one though. 1 looks elegant, but 2+ don't. I got my ears pierced at 11 and really regret it to this day Sad

HoneyDragon · 04/07/2017 19:51

My mother forbade this. I went and got it done anyway and was dead chuffed at my nerve. I wore my hair down for a week. She didn't notice, by the third week I was wearing ponytails and pointedly engineering conversations about earrings. Nothing.

So I told her. She went "you bloody haven't!" Inspected the back and then went "oh, it's quite nice".

By the time I was 15 I had three holes in each lobe.

My dad didn't notice them till I was 19 Grin

It's really not that big oc a deal in the grand scene of things Wink

caffeinestream · 04/07/2017 19:52

I really don't see the big deal, to be honest. My parents made me wait until 18 for some unknown reason Confused - all it meant was I went and got them done on my 18th birthday and they still tutted!

pinkyredrose · 04/07/2017 19:53

bunny that's just your opinion. And if you regret getting pierced the only person affected is you not OPs daughter.

OP I'd let her, can't see why not!

MrsJayy · 04/07/2017 19:56

I got mine done again when i was 12 dd 1 got hers done at 12 must be a 12 thing anyway I would let her get it done it is her ears.

theymademejoin · 04/07/2017 19:57

In theory, I see nothing wrong with it but piercing is so popular now that I'd go with extra ones as slowly as possible. It can be a slippery slope and once you go beyond the basic ear ones, the potential for infection increases. I think they're better off being a bit older and more responsible.

We agreed dd who is 16, could get her nose done at 16 provided she only wore a small stud. That lasted a month and it's now a ring. She's been pushing for belly button for ages but we are standing firm as I know several people who got badly infected. We've said she can do that at 18.

Then she moved on to tongue. Not while she is financially dependent on us. She already has acid erosion on her teeth so I don't want that to worsen or her teeth to get chipped.

Then it was the cartilage. She got that done a couple of weeks ago.

At least it's not tattoos.....

DragonsandDungeons · 04/07/2017 19:58

You can always take them out. I've got retired piercings and no one can tell, so if she later doesn't like them, there's that. I'd let her!

californication87 · 04/07/2017 20:00

I don't think she's too young, it's a relatively painless, easily reversible piercing. I think it looks nice, not chavvy at all.

DD1 is 10 and desperately wants her second piercing, I have said she can get it done when she starts high school, at which point she will be almost 12.

Does her school have any rules about multiple ear piercings? If so, I would probably have some reservations about it, but otherwise I would think it's fine Smile

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 04/07/2017 20:00

I'd let her, better she has it done properly than how I did mine with ice cubes and a stud! Turned out fine btw, just wouldn't recommend it

MrsJayy · 04/07/2017 20:02

Dd has multipile ear piercing i said to her not the face and she stuck to that dd also has tattoos it doesn't really bother me

HighwayDragon1 · 04/07/2017 20:03

Do it on the first day of summer hols so it's properly by the time she gets back to school, so it can be removed (either because of uniform rules, or pe)

caffeinestream · 04/07/2017 20:04

I really don't see the big issue with discrete ear piercings.

They can be removed if necessary, they're easily coverable with hair, or you can just wear small studs/no jewellery if you don't fancy it.

Monkeyface26 · 04/07/2017 20:04

I think this sort of thing should always be a bit of a bargaining chip with teenagers.
"you want a 2nd piercing. I think that's quite an adult thing but, if you can demonstrate your maturity by (insert thing you currently struggle to get them to do) for the next 2 months, then I will know that you are sufficiently grown-up.

MiniAlphaBravo · 04/07/2017 20:07

I would say no because most schools only allow one earring. Hers may be different I suppose. But I think I'd still say no as it is not a decision to make at 13.

Hulababy · 04/07/2017 20:09

In her lobes?
Are they big enough to take two? Not all are.
And does her school permit it?

DD is 15y.
At 11y she had her lobes done - her lobes are small so can only manage one
At 13y she had a tummy done
At 14y she had the top of her ear done

Told her no more for a while!

MrsJayy · 04/07/2017 20:12

Dd2 has teeny earlobes she couldn't get hers done again well she could but it wouldn't look right
