To have reported this in the airport

Waiting in the departure lounge at the airport yesterday and a man sat a few seats down from us repeatedly got up and left his rucksack. He did it the first time and walked over to the toilets, I thought ok fair enough, not something I would do though.
Then he did it a second time a few minutes later, but just walked off out of sight. Nerves started to kick in so I moved DCs away and found a member of staff to report it to, who removed it.
DP said I was over reacting, but I think leaving your bag unattended repeatedly in an airport is totally inappropriate! WIBU for reporting it?

I would do the same .you did the right thing .

OlennasWimple · 01/07/2017 19:03

No, you did exactly the right thing, as the posters and announcements say.

AnnieOH1 · 01/07/2017 19:04

I'd have reported it the first time let alone the second.

Better safe than sorry, especially with everything that's going on.

TroysMammy · 01/07/2017 19:05

No you were not unreasonable. If I remember correctly there are notices in airports and such like not to leave bags unattended.

NicolasFlamel · 01/07/2017 19:05

YANBU He must have been really dim not to know it's a "thing" to not leave your luggage unattended.

TheHyacinthGirl · 01/07/2017 19:05

Annie I was considering it but he returned quickly before I could.
DP acted like I was being totally irrational.

Yanbu, did a member of staff just pick the bag up? That's quite worrying

TheHyacinthGirl · 01/07/2017 19:07

Not sure Nancy - I moved DC to other side and was distracted. It wasn't there when we walked past to board about 30 mins later.

So I assume they removed it but not sure how.

Fucking idiot (bag man bit OP)

I always report. Had to report a bag left at Kings X, a few days after 7/7.

leighdinglady · 01/07/2017 19:08

You did the right thing. Imagine if it was something and you hadn't reported it. We put lives in danger so as not to offend one bloke

Crunchymum · 01/07/2017 19:09

Bag man not OP

sparechange · 01/07/2017 19:11

In the departure lounge, so had presumably been screened by the x-ray machines and also potentially had a swipe test for explosives

I think you over reacted.
The BA departure lounges have left luggage shelves where you can stash your bag while you go shopping etc, so clearly they don't think there is much risk in leaving bags unattended, and I wonder if the man was only doing it to reserve his seat.

HateSummer · 01/07/2017 19:14

Confused....but he was in the departure lounge. Talk about an overreaction. I think you need to calm down and stop ruining other people's holidays. I hope this man was reunited with his bag promptly.

NicolasFlamel · 01/07/2017 19:16

Because nobody has ever concealed anything and got through security Confused

sparechange · 01/07/2017 19:17

Had to report a bag left at Kings X, a few days after 7/7

You can surely see the difference between that, and a bag that has been through full airport screening and is about to be allowed onto a plane Confused

AgentProvocateur · 01/07/2017 19:18

Fair enough to report an unattended bag pre-security, but I wouldn't in the departure lounge.

Guitargirl · 01/07/2017 19:19

You did the right thing and he was being stupid.

Am a bit interested though OP in how the man looked? Did that have any effect on you reporting or not?

cardibach · 01/07/2017 19:21

How do you think explosives get in planes (or airports), then, sparechange? Everything that goes in them goes through full security. People who want to to get bombs on planes(or in airports) find new ways to disguise them. It is entirely sensible to report unattended baggage in an airport

IloveBanff · 01/07/2017 19:23

Well the member of staff to whom the OP reported it will have known that the man had been through security, so isn't it up to them to decide on what action, if any, to take?

sparechange · 01/07/2017 19:25

When did explosives last get onto a plane via a passenger carrying them on through an airpot? Years? Decades?

As I said, if you go into any BA lounge in any country, there will be a rack shelves and coat rails, where passengers are encouraged to leave their bags while they either sit on the sofas in the lounge, or go back into the main airport to go shopping.
I imagine it is the same for every other airline lounge

Clearly, the airlines and airport wouldn't let this happen if there was any concern about people leaving bags unaccompanied.

AnnetteCurtains · 01/07/2017 19:25

It's very unnerving in any case
In this day and age common sense tells you not to leave bags alone
He should get a rollicking for that
