Loud neighbours

A month ago a family began renting the house next door to us. They are a young couple with a toddler (1-2yrs). We are a young couple with a newborn (7weeks). The first few weeks they had several loud parties either on a Friday or Saturday which were hard to tolerate but which we put down to house warming/settling in.

Tonight however we were at the end of our tether as their loud music and booming voices woke our baby and ourselves up multiple times. We didn't much fancy going round and confronting a bunch of drunk strangers at silly o'clock so phoned the police to report the disturbance.

The police swiftly responded and after hearing them yell 'we're only fucking talking' the noise and music rescinded.... for about 10mins. Now they've decided to blare music out periodically for about a minute every few minutes, which I find extremely petty.

It's pretty selfish behaviour having parties this frequent considering they have a small toddler in the house. I have no idea how she can be getting a good night sleep.

WWYD in this situation? Would you phone the police again?

So far we've had Ed Sheeran, Craig David, Belinda Carlisle, Lady Gaga and currently on Shania Twain....

Piesy old stuff it was 7 days from the Born To Do It album. I've no issue with their song choices but there's a time and a place.

DH was supposed to be playing golf at 7, after the predicted morning feed but since I've had 1-2hrs sleep he's said he will cancel.

We're now on Bon Jovi and the singing has stsrted. Really don't think they give a rats arse and are probably egging us on to phone the police again...which is so inconsiderate as they're well aware we have a new born.

Ok, with Bon Jovi a line has been crossed. That is a crime against good taste and frankly the police need to be involved again.
Sorry.. you must be very tired and pissed off. And I agree.. their poor toddler..

Oh gawd that's awful.

Have a look at your local council's website, there should be a number for environmental health peeps who deal with noise issues.

Presumably you're not the only neighbours? The Police wouldn't have told them the complaint came from you?

My advice is to definitely NOT confront them yourselves. That will only result in a nightmare. Call the police as much as you need to.

It's not really a police matter but you can call the council, write down all the dates, times and duration of disturbances and after keeping a diary they will probably put recording equipment in your house for a few days. We did this, was a nightmare but we no longer have noisy neighbours though ours weren't partying it was different circumstances. Good luck

They really don't give a fuck do they? When I had a loud music playing neighbour numerous people said to me 'maybe they just don't realise how loud they are'. They do and they don't care. If you try and speak to them reasonably chances are you'll get an earful about what stuck up killjoys you are.

Notify the letting agency each time and keep a log. There will be a point at which landlord can get notice and if they think the tenants aren't looking after the place they may give notice. Note anything else e.g rubbish, that indicates they aren't taking care of it or being a nuisance. Good luck

Don't personally confront them but keep a noise diary, and if possible record the noise. What you need is someone to come round to your house to catch them in the act and hear the music etc. Every time they make noise phone the council.

They just sound awful. I would keep calling until they are moved on. Are they private tenants? If so get in touch with the owner and agent.

Poor you, noisy neighbours make life a misery. And with a newborn as well, just awful for you. I would have had a word face to face first but as that ship has sailed yes keep reporting to council, police, landlord. Good luck hope it gets better for you.

Were you able to record any of the later noise on your phone? Environmental health and letting agency need to hear it and see the time recorded as 3.15 am. That's not acceptable in anyone's book.

Is the toddler there? My guess would be that grandparents have toddler overnight and they don't care. Do you have some loud gardening/decorating/drilling to do this morning Grin?

Noise log make a nuisance of yourself with their letting agent- every time they annoy you - you need to be calling it through the agent will soon get fed up!
We had a noisy neighbour but she owned and as we we're selling we put up with it but it was a pain in the arse but you're in a better position as they are renting.

See of you can find out the owner of the property and contact them about the noise. There will be a clause in their rental comtract about not antagonizing the neighbours. You should be able to find the owners details on a land registry search. It will piss the neighbours off, but hopefully resolve the matter.

You called the police rather than speak to them in the first place? YABU. They may have responded well to you asking them to dampen the noise level a bit... They sound like dicks but it was a dickish move from you too. It won't be easy from here on.

Thanks for the replies everyone, the noise died out just after 4 which coincided with the little one screaming for a feed. Was tempted to hold her up to the wall crying, but wasn't going to let the wee one suffer to spite the neighbours. DH took over for feeds so got almost 4hrs sleep. Rewarded him by giving blessing for him to play 9 holes this morningSmile

Their toddler was in as she's crying just now... bit of karma for them, although really wasn't fair on the little one.

I'm very friendky with the tenant who lived their before them as we were at school together and only move a street over. Should I contact her to get the landlords details or just keep a log and maybe contact her if any further instances occur?

jojo as I said in OP I didn't feel comfortable confronting drunk neighbours in the middle of the night, especially since the husband is a very loud and imposing man and I'm only small. His wife replied to police 'we're only fucking talking' so I doubt they would've been very understanding or diplomatic.

Sorry but I wholly disagree. I have neighbours who play loud music all day and night, they know damn well it's far above acceptable levels (any hearing person with a brain knows when their music is blaring), why would they stop because the OP asked them to? Especially since they had been drinking and could easily become aggressive. As for 'dampen it down', there should be no noticeable sounds from neighbours after 11pm (once in a blue moon parties are a given but not every weekend!).

Keep a diary, op, and recordings as well. If you're childish like me, I'd wait until they stopped/went to bed and start blaring whatever you like in every room. I feel sorry for that poor child, at least my twat neighbour's children are teenagers and can be just as anti social.

For a second I thought you were talking about me Blush! The difference is I've been hugely apologetic to people who've complained about late night music and loud talking noise (old flat) and my 3yr old out early morning (new place).
