To think that Jamie Cullum is boring

I'm at a concert. Outside. In the sunshine. It should be blissful.

Jamie Cullum is on stage. I'm bored witless. There are loads of people whooping and a-hollering. I'm trying to look interested.

Is Greg Porter on soon?

tigerdriverII · 17/06/2017 20:26

Yy. About an hour. I love him. Just Jamie, so full of jiggling about and manic piano jumping, to Radio 2 choons

I have to admit I don't like jazz anyway, but Jamie Cullum does my head in on his Radio 2 slot.

I have to switch off.

I like Gregory Porter's voice, but I can't listen to most of his music.

Jazz makes very little sense to me.

He did a beautiful cover of Let It Be which I sometimes play on repeat.....

I've lurked on mumsnet for a few years now... wanted to join in on various threads but never quite felt bothered enough/could pluck up the courage. I was scanning Aibu for something to distract me from my toddler's crying and found your post minutes after my father sent me a photo of J.C playing at the B.P concert. It looks boring, I've always thought he sounds boring, and I've been to similar events and felt the same! YANBU! Hope Gregory Porter is more entertaining! Lovely evening for it though!

Hulder · 17/06/2017 20:46

Thank-you!

Can I mention that I've never really liked his singing voice either?

Jazz to me always sounds like it's a lot of fun for those playing it but they haven't always considered the needs of those having to listen to it.

tigerdriverII · 17/06/2017 20:47

I know! I want to get pissed and jump around in the mosh pit.

Remarkably, many of the audience seem to be in their 20s and 30s. I despair!

I have high hopes of G Porter.

Jamie has just voluntarily done an uncalled for second encore, the bastard.

He sucks. YANBU

Chocness · 17/06/2017 21:41

Ah bless him he's a great chap and a great musician. Leave him alone!

Gingernaut · 17/06/2017 22:07

This is entirely my opinion. I understand taste is subjective and tastes differ.

I'm not denying that he's a good musician.

However, he has a monotonous speaking voice, his playing is rambling and self indulgent and the piece he starts off playing is nothing like the music what the composer wrote.

I dislike improvised, scat singing for the same reason.

Mariah Carey can die a death and I wouldn't mourn her either.

Zafodbeeblbrox10 · 17/06/2017 22:10

You Don't have to listen to it.. At least his music is inspired and different, unlike most of the shit we hear these days

QuiteLikely5 · 17/06/2017 22:12

I don't know his music but he must be half decent!

Why are you bothering to listen to him though?

dappledlightinflight · 17/06/2017 22:14

YABVU I love Jamie Cullen and I love Jazz! I admit my DF was a professional Jazz trumpeter so maybe you need to have heard jazz inutero to fully appreciate how exciting it is. Grin

Crispsheets · 17/06/2017 22:17

I love Jamie and Gregory.
I like to think my partner and I are the 50s equivalent of Jamie and SophieGrin

bonfireheart · 18/06/2017 00:32

The most interesting thing about him is that he's married to Sophie.

tigerdriverII · 18/06/2017 00:41

Well: Gregory was amazing, so cool, charismatic and what a voice. So in sum a great evening.

But I still don't get Jamie at all, or why he inspires such devotion!

Gingernaut · 18/06/2017 11:09

Is Gregory still wearing that balaclava? Confused

Crispsheets · 18/06/2017 11:30

He wears it to cover up skin scarring

Moussemoose · 18/06/2017 11:33

Gingernaut

his playing is rambling he plays jazz! That's kind of the point.

tigerdriverII · 18/06/2017 11:43

He was wearing his balaclava hat plus a very tight linen suit. It was sweltering but I guess you get used to it.

You are BU. Boring is the last thing he was last night. I was at the same concert and thought JC was fabulous. What a showman, what a pianist and what energy. I loved every minute of it - especially the encores! Gregory Porter was fantastic too, though very different. If you don't 'get' Jamie Callum why on earth would you pay a good deal of money for a ticket which obviously has him as one of the two main acts? If you don't like his style of jazz maybe let someone else who probably missed out on a ticket have yours! The man's got more talent in his little finger than I will ever have. And I'm saying that as someone who's been playing the piano for over 40 years!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/06/2017 12:13

I don't like jazz, but I think he comes across as a great bloke when I've heard him interviewed. I get quite swoony.

TheNaze73 · 18/06/2017 12:19

YANBU. I'd rather shit in my hands & clap rather than listen to that goon

GinSwigmore · 18/06/2017 12:25

Could be worse. Could have been Jools ''fwend fwend'' Holland or Plinky Plonk Jools Beg-a-friend as he's known in our house.

whirliegig · 18/06/2017 12:27

Love his Radio 2 programme on Tuesdays. Wish is was longer - my favourite listen of the week!
